jbg Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 (edited) This post is a search for the knowledge of the community. Since December 2000 one of my friends has had pain in the lower left quadrant of his mouth always in one particular tooth. The pain is a dull, deep, gnawing, crushing pain that he describes as being with him 24 hours a day. Its intensity varies, but it is always there. It is completely ruling his life. The pain started with a crown preparation of tooth #20 in December of 2000. After tooth #20 was extracted (July 2003) the pain immediately jumped to tooth #19. Two years later (July 2005), tooth #19 was extracted and the pain immediately jumped to tooth #18. The pain remains in tooth #18. My friend has been diagnosed with a neuropathy of the trigeminal nerve. A mandibular nerve block does NOT block the pain so it appears that there is a Central Nervous System component to the problem. Because my friend has tried everything that is mainstream, he and his family are not interested in more good doctors, but rather doctors, treatments or patients who have overcome severe chronic pain in some experimental or through some highly unexpected approach. If you have a thought on how to help or put us in touch with someone, please let me know. The beginning of this post is a specific, technical explanation of his condition. Thank you anyone who can offer any suggestions and/or contacts. Please respond, private message or e-mail to [email protected] . Pliny Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Just a question. For the intitial crown preparation, after which you say the pain started, do you know if a local or general anesthetic was used? I would hazard a guess it was a general anesthetic. Quote I want to be in the class that ensures the classless society remains classless.
Bonam Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 I know someone with a chronic condition that causes her extreme, continuous, pain. The only thing she can do is just take very strong painkillers every single day. Quote

AngusThermopyle Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) Several recent studies have shown Marijuana to be an effective non-addictive method of pain relief with no permanent or even temporary adverse affects. Perhaps your friend should apply for a medical license and give that a shot as opposed to the far more harmfull opiate and chemical alternatives. The reason I mention this is because of certain Marijuana centered debates held on this forum. It appeared to me that many posters were debating from a position of ignorance and bias so I decided to do some research for myself regarding this subject, it really was quite an eye opener. Apparently breeders of medical grade Cannabis are not breeding for exceptionaly high levels of THC but rather for high levels of CBD and CBN, two compounds that studies are showing to have many medical benefits but no psychoactive properties at all. One strain that I saw mentioned over and over was called Cannatonic, this strain produces CBD and CBN concentrations equal to or greater the THC concentrations, approx 6 to 8%. Having said that I must confess I don't know much about your friends condition. It just seems to me that a natural non harmfull alternative might be prefferable to an addictive or surgical method. I do have a friend who suffers from debilitating back pain after being involved in an auto accident. He used prescription painkillers to control the pain but said they left him useless and unable to function in any meaningfull way. He stopped using them and instead started using Marijuana and though he said it does not completely eliminate the pain it does allow him to control it and remain functional. Anyway, just some food for thought. One thing I do find rather strange about your post is that initially you state a friend asked you for help and then later you state that they detest you and you them. It appears you may have a rather non standard view of friendship. Edited May 25, 2011 by AngusThermopyle Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye
BubberMiley Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 It appears you may have a rather non standard view of friendship. Perhaps if he ruled out the people who detested him, he wouldn't have any friends at all. Quote "I think it's fun watching the waldick get all excited/knickers in a knot over something." -scribblet

I wound up funneling the suggestions through a much more mature and closer friend. Basically my group of friends from elementary school are a bunch of 54 year old babies. jbg Posted August 1, 2011 Author Report Posted August 1, 2011 I wanted to thank everyone for their help here. This is a redacted copy of the e-mail I sent out to mutual friends: ============================================================================================== To some who may not know, Howie _____, QRS 1971, SHS 1975 passed away on July 31, 2011. I spoke with Norman ____, probably my closest friend through the years and who lived across the street from Howie. Norman provided much support and comfort in the last days. In grade school, I often played in a toy log cabin his parents erected in his back yard on Meadow Road, and I played with his dog, Marvin. Over the years of high school and college, I knew Howie well. We both enjoyed many a "guess the lyrics" contest involving our mutual near-favorite musician, Neil Young. He had me over for dinner in Nashville while I was considering Vanderbilt Law School where he was an undergraduate. Howie had a big heart and meant and did well for everyone. His loss saddens us all. A good and skilled talented dentist will provide a painless fix - without general anesthetic - sounds like there is a lot of fear going on regardging dentists - some will destroy your mouth - others will repair it perfectly...and - provide some powerful drugs after words that will constipate the hell out of you.
