Topaz Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 When the members go back to the House, they will have to elect a new Speaker and depending on the outcome of the election, could we also see the first NDP Speaker?? I"m not sure who will be the next unbiased speaker. Thoughts. Quote

I"m not sure who will be the next unbiased speaker. Thoughts.I'm assuming that your question is under the scenario of a Tory minority. I doubt very much that Harper would go along with an NDP speaker and for that matter, Layton wouldn't want to give up an experienced caucus member. At most, it could be a Liberal but I think more likely that it will be a backbencher from the Conservatives. Harper doesn't want/need another contempt ruling. Quote

Sandy MacNab Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Elizabeth May The MPs shouldn't have much difficulty hearing her. Quote
nittanylionstorm07 Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Bump to continue this discussion. Honestly, who is it going to be? It would be mildly funny if Harper nominated the 19 year old McGill student that's now an NDP MP. Quote
Smallc Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 It would be mildly funny if Harper nominated the 19 year old McGill student that's now an NDP MP. No one gets nominated for the position. All MPs that are not in Cabinet or party leaders are eligible. They actually have to withdraw their name to not be on the ballot. There is a secret vote, and so the house will decide. Quote

Smallc Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Ah that's right. It's probably going to be an NDP MP, but who? It's usually a government MP, actually. I would expect, that with a majority, the Conservatives will vote for one of their own. Quote

nittanylionstorm07 Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Also, I think I'd want Leona Aglukkaq, in this case... and then the Ministry of Health can go to the new conservative MP that has a medical degree and a history in the health sector (I think she's from Quebec?) Quote

Smallc Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 A women would be interesting, and it might be a smart political move on Harper's part. Harper doesn't pick the speaker (of the House - the Senate is his choice), and has no more say than any other MP. Quote
