Sadly too many go to university just because they dont know what else to do with themselves after high school. This leads to useless degrees in my opinion. If you love literature, you dont know what you want to do with your life but you want to go to school then by all means go and get a degree in English but dont complain about working a lower paying job than the guy who went and took an engineering coarse. The worse out of this is so many become teachers because there is nothing else they can do with the degree. Then we end up with bitter university grads teaching our youth.

I wasted my youth, went to school forever. Got a Ph.D. Did post-doc work and everything, but unfortunately I was on the job market just when the US pulled out of Viet Nam and gave up the space race. R&D in the western world died. I had a mortgage and a one year old daughter, and I needed a job. That was my criteria, it had to be a job. I ended up selling in the oil industry, just because the fool was stupid enough to hire me. Well, I bounced around and kept getting promoted and finding better jobs and ended up OK. And I am absolutely sure that both the degrees impressed potential employers, plus the thinking methodology and problem solving skills that a good university education teaches you helped me advance.

Oh I don't mind people going to school, just don't rub it in my face, because that leads to the bank account and asset pissing match, and I end up coming across as an arrogant ass. Sounds like you got into a debate with someone with rocks in their head. There's lots of that in the country and in the city uni educated or not.

As for xenophobia, I'm all for immigration. We need all the doctors, labourers, dentists, etc. We can get. I don't feel like travelling an hour to go see the doctor. I live in an area with lots of poverty, you don't want to live like that.

As often as there is some idiot who equates a degree with intelligence, on the other side there is insecurity that the opposite might be true. Both are fools.

As far as xenophobia, the thing that shocks me most every time I return home, is the level of casual racism. Almost any casual conversation, carried on long enough, will provide an example. It is that more than anything else that I object to in rural/oilpatch thinking.

I should add that I'm not against a university degree. I'm against a university degree in liberal arts that gets you...nothing. Except a sizable student loan.

Well, and, you know, knowledge. since when did knowledge become a bad thing?

I support the Canadian military. I want our brave soldiers who put their lives on the line for our freedom to have the best equipment, and that includes fighter jets.

The biggest load I have heard to this date at this forum.

Who has put our freedom in Canada in jepordy?

When I last checked there are only two parties that have.

The American government and the Canadian government.

I am not saying that the troops do not put their lives on the line.

They put their lives on the line for Harpers foreign policy since no country has invaded Canada!

I have a university degree in engineering. I would like nothing better, if I had the time and money, then to go back and take some "artsie" courses. The world is a fascinating place, and education should be a goal in itself.

Another example of urban people try to tell rural folks how it is and how they should behave and what they should believe in. So all rural people are uneducated and stupid in your terms. That is absolutely absurd. So by your reasoning the only thing keeping all the conservatives in the world from becoming socialists is a good education.

You and people like you are out of touch with reality and need to grow up if that is your attitude. Rural folks grow the food you eat and one piece of farm machinery is worth more then some peoples homes in Canada.

Just because a person chooses to live in a rural setting doesn't mean they're uneducated.

Just because a person wants less government intrusion into their lives, this doesn't mean they're uneducated either.

You are one person buddy and do not speak for all farmers!

I would love to go back and study astronomy. I also spent a lot of time studying physics which I found amazing.

If only those pesky little things like mortgages and children's education would quit getting in the way.

Knowledge is never a bad thing. However, if you ignore that which can support you in a career and pursue only that which satisfies the soul (!) you will be the most highly educated guy on welfare.

Thus, we have far too many teachers.

Nope your post was the big load. So your saying we shouldnt take part in the U.N and help with Nato led missions? The liberals sent our troups into Afganistan with tin can jeeps and green camo uniforms. The conservatives dumped a ton of money into the military because they had to. The military has been the whipping boy for years under the liberals continously having the budget cut back but still expected to maintain Canadas role on the world stage. We have a duty in a world wide role to maintain a decent fighting military.

Your ignorance is astounding, sorry but I will take the informed decision of a farmer who runs a million dollar milking business over some idiot idealogist who has a degree in art history and works at a coffee house any day. The education in the rural towns is no different in the cities. Where we have uneducated people working heavy labour and farm jobs you have pot heads sucking at the welfare tit bitching that there are no jobs out there despite all the help wanted signs in store fronts.

Million dollars?

Only if a developer wants to buy it for the land to build houses on it

The average tractor costs over $250,000 these days and a combine over $350,000. Right there he's well on his way to the million dollars. And what is a section of arable land cost in your neck of the woods? Yes, million dollars plus.

I took a lot of physics, but little of the "fun" stuff (more practical). Psychology, sociology, philosophy, history are what I would be most interested in.

For me, it would be a waste of money to get a degree. I'm not dropping 60k for a piece of paper I don't need. I heard from uni students back in the day that their exams are based on what they learn in textbooks at the bookstore. So I and the credit card hit up the bookstore and I got my "education" at a tenth of the price and I got to stay at home.

Yeah, modern farms are multi-million dollar enterprises. They have to be just to get to the point where they are profitable.

Meh. Didn't really grab my attention.

Except Metaphysics 321. Had to have another elective. Weird ass prof gave the strangest assignments. Spend the first 5 weekly labs on a paper to prove the number "2" existed. Did pretty damn well too.

Next assignment? The bastard made me write a paper proving that the number "2" didn't exist.

Just weird. But fun.

hear the whooshing noise go over your head??... that was the point of my post which you failed to grasp...a perfect example what a lack of logic, comprehension and sophistication that results from a minimal education...

fixed your spelling...

Ya ok who's pointing the gun at our heads and telling us to send troops to Afganistan then?

When I last checked Afganistan never invaded Canada.

Neither did Germany,Japan,Italy or Korea.

So you were happy with what Germany and Japan did in starting WWII and during it. And more importantly, what they were planning to keep doing?

Yes, philosophy (metaphysics) would probably be the top of my list.

It's funny how people that aren't university educated and for all intents and purposes are entirely clueless about university educations are decrying it as useless.

$60k for a university education? What university charges $15000 per year for classes?

Also, people seem to be blissfully unaware that universities hand out money to students that can hit the honour roll or dean's lists, cutting down the expense further.

Sure, if you go to university with the mentality that "Cs get degrees", you're going to be flipping burgers when you're done. If you actually show up and do a good job there are numerous benefits to that education.

Finally, all of your spurious anecdotal evidence aside, the statistics show that having a university degree... any university degree results in significantly higher earnings throughout a person's lifetime.

If you don't know anything about an industry maybe your value judgments aren't all that valid.
