Topaz Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 In 2009-2010 and maybe now in 2011, not sure on that, it cost 32 Million in 2010 for use of the Challenger VIP jets. The military used the jets to transport the brass, train pilots and evacuate the wounded soldiers of 37 trips, totally 367. 282 trips carried the PM and other VIPs. One hour of flight cost $3,225.00, total cost 2010 was 32 Million. So now, Canadians know were some of the military budget is spent. http://thetyee.ca/CanadianPress/2011/03/19/VIP-Jets-Military-6300951/ Quote

How do you explain Chretien cancelling much needed helicopter deal, while buying new Lear jets for politicians to move their asses around? Quote
Smallc Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Military SHOULD use them. Not politicians. Both should use them, since that's what they're for. Quote
William Ashley Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Both should use them, since that's what they're for. Military should use realistic simulators. Politicians should use economy class if not paying out of pocket. Chances of fighting in a private jet are minimal to give training value. You can't avoid eventually flying, but why arnt they training at a pilots school first, chances are that the $40,000 per year.. scarily only ads up to 20 hour of flight on the private jet. Here is the catch though.. one flight semestre is 50 flight hours. So no the value is better sending them to flight school than having them train on private jets. Of course it is already there but, it isnt economical, but I don't htink that is what the miltiary is going for. What makes it economical is people like the defence minister etc.. who only fly on private jet and these flight costs add up to 20k + for them and their aids, meanwhile others are flying busines class/ first class at a 3+k a pop. Overall though it really aint economical but they are bad guys so they cant mingle in with the public, someone could hurt them. Now here is how it is economical. If they fly charter, where there are paying customers. This is what the military should aim for... providing money earning private charters.... This way it is two birds with one stone. 1. They make money 2. They get flight hour training. My graduated solution would be 1. send them to flight school, then have them as flight crew on charters flown by seasoned pilots. Take this for instance they are chartering $5200 for 1 hour on a business jet for charter http://www.aircharterteam.com/aircraft-charter.php If based against the cost it might even break even for training costs. Wilber Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Let me ask you a question William. Would you leave your car in your garage then go out and rent one and hire a driver in order to save money?
