Michael Hardner Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 The score so far- War: 50, Peace: 0 That's a little cynical. The world seems to me to be a safer place than 50 years ago, if only for the reduction of mutually assured destruction as a possible scenario. Muddy Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 That's a little cynical. The world seems to me to be a safer place than 50 years ago, if only for the reduction of mutually assured destruction as a possible scenario. MAD did a lot more for peace than the so called Peace Core. The only thing a bad guy fears is someone who has as big a stick or bigger. Not some wishful thinker... Quote

The only thing a bad guy fears is someone who has as big a stick or bigger. Not some wishful thinker... That's a good point. How effective is the Peace Corps ? Or, to me, WHAT is the Peace Corps ? Perhaps I will never know. In any case, peace is piecing it together peace by piece by peace. The Peace Corps was intended as a counter to globetrotting Soviet teachers and technicians. ToadBrother Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 MAD did a lot more for peace than the so called Peace Core. The only thing a bad guy fears is someone who has as big a stick or bigger. Not some wishful thinker... Always been my perspective. What guaranteed, to a large degree, peace for the last six and a half decades was nuclear armaments. It did screw over a lot of smaller countries as they got to be proxies for superpower wrangling, but all in all, I'd rather have had that then a conventional WWIII following on the heals of WWII, or even scarier, getting part way through WWIII and having the Soviets figure out the hydrogen bomb first. Muddy Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Happy 50th B-day to the Peace Corps! -- The people involved have done a tremendous amount of good. What accomplishments have they brought to world peace? I think the people who joined were probably very nice folks and the guys joined to be near the girls. Nothing wrong with that of course. But just what did they accomplish? Quote

They've accomplished a lot of things for a lot of villages/towns and a lot of individual people. Each hospital, school, job opportunity et al means everything to those who were in need. I've seen the results/appreciation first hand. It's a wonderful program. It is truly winning the hearts of people, and I think that goes a long way towards achieving peace. Quote

But where is it that it brought about peace in the decades of their existence. Is it Africa,Middle East, the Far East? What country has declared that peace was achieved because of the Peace core? I doubt any. What counties were given credit for the hard work of these idealistic young people who may have brought comfort to some individuals? Have they done as much as christian missions ? Convince me ! I am willing to listen. Quote
