M.Dancer Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I'm betting you remember most of those. I vaguely remember the Oilers' wins in 1988 and 1990, although I was very young at the time and it didn't really have much significance. 2006 was especially exciting for me, because I was dishing out drinks in a Whyte Ave pub at the time. -k I can only remember 12 of them...going on 13 Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Sir Bandelot Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I have never been a hockey fan, or a fan of any sport for that matter. Recently, I was told I am a "poor Canadian" because I don't watch hockey. A poor Canadian? Let's see: I have voted in every election since I was 18 (that's 40 years now). I have been politically active. I have volunteered with youth for 21 years. I do a lot of other volunteer work as well. I fly the Canadian flag on my home all the time. I am a "poor Canadian"? Some armchair athletes think that becuase I don't watch a game that determines how good a Canadian I am? Shake your heads. I am a better Canadian than many of them. Being a whiner makes you a poor Canadian. Quote

ironstone Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 I know how you feel, I am a devotee of Les Glorieux. But at least we had (1915–16, 1923–24, 1929–30, 1930–31, 1943–44, 1945–46, 1952–53, 1955–56, 1956–57, 1957–58, 1958–59, 1959–60, 1964–65, 1965–66, 1967–68, 1968–69, 1970–71, 1972–73, 1975–76, 1976–77, 1977–78, 1978–79, 1985–86, 1992–93) Ahh Les Glorieux.Correct me if I'm wrong but did the majority of those cup wins come because of the provincial draft? That was when Montreal and Toronto each got the top two pics from Quebec and Ontario each year up until 1970?Imagine getting handed two top players year in and year out...and much of that era was a six team league.Surely it's no coincidence that these are the two teams with the most cup wins.Montreal certainly did a bit better than Toronto and benefitted from said pics until the late 70's.Since then they are no longer the dominant force they once were. With an enormous advantage like the provincial draft, how on earth could they NOT win? Yea........just a bit. Every year the season opens, I sit there and think oh no...its "Major League , The Hockey Edition" all over again. Too high... Too short... Quote

Nothing against the Canes, they were a great team. But the Oilers went in to the playoffs in 8th spot in the west. It was a Cinderella story in the making. All the way to game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals. One win a way from a very memorable sports moment. The sound of the crowd at those games, the way they all sang Oh Canada before each match. Pretty inspiring hockey fans. Quote "Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish - too much handling will spoil it." Lao Tzu

The 'canes (damn them to hell for all time) were also an eight seed. The Oilers actually had a really solid team that season. they lacked NHL-calibre goaltending for most of the year, which is the main reason they ended up in the final spot. Sad thing is, that's as close as they are likely to come for a decade or longer. Quote
