Except that the CRTC is in a rather odd position in that one of its powers is to set policy.

The CRTC’s role was to foster competition in the Canadian marketplace and ensure that Canadian media didn't get overwhelmed by american media.

That’s a good goal/mandate, unfortunately the CRTC is with people who have a huge monetary stake in the telecom companies their supposed to regulate, and unsurprisingly Canada has the most expensive (to the consumer) telecom system in the world.

Corus is a Shaw FAMILY thing, not a Shaw corporate thing. I know that one is likely the other, but trusting (naively) the Corus website FAQ on the questions:

Q. What is Corus Entertainment’s current relationship with Shaw?

A. Corus Entertainment was created from the media assets of Shaw Communications Inc. Corus became a separate and distinct, publicly traded corporation in September 1999. There is no formal ownership or control relationship between Corus Entertainment and Shaw Communications. The Shaw family holds the majority of voting shares in both companies. Shaw Cable is one of Corus Entertainment’s largest customers.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/22/technology/22iht-broadband22.html?_r=2&partner=rss&emc=rss

South Korea provides internet access at hundreds of times the speed of an average Canadians access.

Lets do a little joke comparison:

The average access speed in South Korea is 100mb/s. If an avaerage Canadian were to have this access speed they would be able to utilize it for about 250 seconds before reaching a 25gb cap. That's at current speeds. If the South Koreas reach their goal of a gigabit network (1000mb/s) by 2012 it would take 25 seconds to reach the cap.

With Canada so far behind even poorer nations like South Korea why is it that the Cons have yet to reveal any broadband plan for Canada? Even Australia, Harper's dream of a country, has unveild plans to build a national gigabit network (which would provide speeds about ~500 times faster than the average Canadian connection)

South Korea is not a poor country. It's also a much smaller country and thus the infrastructure is a lot cheaper to put together.

With that said, it's not 100x more expensive to put together here, particularly if you live in southern ontario. We're getting totally fleeced here in Canada.

Here comes the Harper gang to save Canadians by overuling the CRTC again. It makes far more sense just to close the CRTC and have any media concerns sent to the PMO to save people the time and energy of a middle man.

One must control the media and those who control the media to control the media - I bet Mr. Goebbles would have a job in the PMO today if he were available.

Why is it these "independent" organizations like CSE, CSIS, RCMP and the CRTC exist as "arms length organizations anyway".

Hmmm? I wonder.

Crisis averted and a few other things the PMO didn't agree with the CRTC and the Courts on have been thrown into the muddy picture.

Nothing like a dictator to overrule the law and do what he wants his people regardles of what the closest thing to democracy canada has in a the first past the post "minority populus in a riding within a minority" parliament.

Its wonderful how the powers of office can be defined as "ongoing ocnvention" thereby making the powers of PM unlimited because no law defines the post -- one might think the person would be "subject" the the law, not above the law. Well if people wonder why I spit on the government this is a fine example of it. But in this case - I'm sure you all think it is good because it lowers your bills.

I know how you think ---- give a little get a little eh.

Burn because between you two you are ........ my ideals over.

Boo hoo.

Good for you two bad for me.

I don't want the PMO overriding the CRTC I don't want partisan people doing this for political motives. The laws are there for a reason - the framework here is what is best for Canadians - in terms of the services --- is someone at the CRTC doing their job wrong -- can Harper point out who did it wrong to require them to be overruled.. or is this just another NOT.. why pay people to be overuled by illegal and generally unethical practice?

This is utter BS.

If you have "good reasons" you shouldn't have to just say NO. you should be able to say why not.

What is wrong or innaccurate or a falsely formed premise.

I can't wait till I'm dead and have my oppourtunity for me to have you all burn if given the chance for your otherwise evil and corrupt minds.

Burn.

The whole some people don't like it but we don't have any real reasons for doing this - bs.

Change the rules or do it legal.

Oh hold on would parliament maybe not agree? Or would that be too undemocratic for the Conservative Party to come to terms with.

In their 1 for 4 passage in the house over the last 4 years of bills.

Or does passing bills require partliament to be "open" maybe that is the problem - whenever an illegal or ciminal occurance starts coming to light you need to shut everyone up... how can you rule with making law if you shut down the legal process and have to buy people off to get anything.... oh sure we have "common ground" for the good of the people there.

...

whyever for would parliament not agree to let the PMO directly run all the various agencies that are suppose to be independent --- and with a minority of perhaps 15% of the voting population or a mear 6% of Canadians supporting the party?

Harpers Canadian democracy shows itself again. Go Harper democracy never again will a population be so stupid as to think legitimacy for a tyrants rule.
