bush_cheney2004 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 The IMF is headed by an American and may be controlled by Americans, but that in no way shows it is American Dominated. Gotta pull back that curtain a little more. IMF membership, quotas, and voting power: http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/memdir/members.htm American = United States = 17% = dominates Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
ToadBrother Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 It was the beginning of the end if only because the bastard Americans would go on to displace them. The roots of the American Revolutionary War struck at the heart of the British Empire. That displacement took over a century, and in the meantime Britain gained India, a far more profitable venture all in all. Quote

OK...but the Monroe Doctrine was 1823, effectively telling Britain and the rest of Europe that the party was over in the Americas...new sheriff in town. That may be, but Britain still ended up with a larger share of the Americas than the US did. Like I said, no one can seriously argue that the Empire began its decline until after WWI. Quote

Like I said, no one can seriously argue that the Empire began its decline until after WWI. I disagree, as Great Britain suffered several setbacks and set the stage for its own demise with resulting WWI/WWII. The "Empire" met with increasing colonial competition and resistance to expansion in Africa and Asia. The US was not a colonial power, and Britain ended up trading interest in North America to save its own skin. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
