Michael Hardner Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) A singer who performed in front of a “mixed audience” of men and women was lashed 39 times to make him “repent,” after a ruling by a self-described rabbinic court on Wednesday. Anybody else confused by this ? We have seen posts on here about disallowing Sharia Law in 'the West' for private dispute arbitration but this appears to be a criminal punishment ? Can someone explain how this works ? Edited September 21, 2010 by Michael Hardner Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
kimmy Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 First off, to be clear: this was in Israel? Second, I think we'd need to know whether this "rabbinic court" has any legal authority. And third, it's another great example of the kind of religious stupidity that I'd fight to keep out of Canadian law. I doubt anybody here is going to look at this and say "well, it wasn't Muslims, so I don't see a problem with it." It's stupid. Why are Canadians more concerned about conservative Muslims than conservative Jews? We've got a lot more of the former here. If we had extremist Jews like these guys making noises in Canada, people would get sick of them in a hurry. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Try This JPost Link Your questions are good, and I think religious imposition in law is more pervasive in the West maybe than we realized. guyser Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 I too would like to know if this was in Israel and if it is within Israeli law, if it is, I'm surprised. Naw, it had no standing in Israeli Law and the only reason it was carried out was the singer agreed to it. Apparently it didnt hurt and they were symbolic lashes. "Singer Given Lashes"........brought to you by Mabelline Symbolics - sheez thanks for an explanation I should've read more closely, although it isn't clear. Yechiel, who said, “I accept upon myself the lashing for my sins,” was ordered to stand by a wooden poll with his head facing north (“from whence the evil inclination comes”), his hands tied with a azure-colored rope (“a symbol of mercy”), and served his “sentence.” I suspect this entertainer was going for some publicity LOL ( is that a wooden pole? ) or where they taking a poll LOL Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
