maplesyrup Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 Palace revolt simmers against PM The Liberals are in disarray. With polls showing them headed for minority government status — or worse — some party member have quietly begun to organize a campaign to dump Paul Martin after the election."If it's a (Liberal) minority, this is happening," said one long-time party organizer. "If it's a minority Conservative government, he's going to have to resign right away." I'll go with the latter point of view. Slavik44 Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 MS who do you think is the front runner for replacing Martin, WHEN , this happens? maplesyrup Posted June 8, 2004 Author Report Posted June 8, 2004 slavik44.......Liberals in recent history have alternated between francophones and anglophones. I think Pierre Pettigrew stands a good chance. Forget people like Manley - he's an anglo, no charisma, just like Martin. August1991 Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I think Pierre Pettigrew stands a good chance. Pettigrew is now identified with the Martin/Lapierre non-pure federalist wing of the Liberal party. The only francophone with the standing to be leader is Stephane Dion. Quote

August1991 Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Even bad leaders get a chance at two elections with the liberals, something the Conservatives need to learn. The only example we have is Turner. That's hardly a strong precedent. In any case, this situation is very different. PM PM insisted on taking the wheel - then he drove the car off the cliff. I don't see the Libs fixing the car and then letting PM PM take the wheel again. Most Libs now realize that Chretien would have won a fourth term. The Libs have committed the cardinal Liberal sin: they lost power. Quote
