The latest facts saying crime is going down so why spend millions and millions on these prisons? Since its out west, does this mean the Tories are going to put more First Nations in prisons? It seems all these Tories want to do is spending money on, prisons, jets, G20 summits. Save money and vote these guys out! Quote

You are not able to do that, because the corporate media control the mind of most people, even you vote the guys out, others guys are just the same, no guy like you is able to be voted because you will not be able to help those interest groups to rob more money from tax payers, so your opinion will not be in main stream corporate control media. This is western style of "democracy". It seems all these Tories want to do is spending money on, prisons, jets, G20 summits. Save money and vote these guys out! Maybe they plan on hiring more judges and lawyers. Also why look at crime rates, they are irrelevant mostly as compared to the real statistic -- prison populations and sentencing lengths. Personally I support ghulags(for repeat offenders, dangerous public safety threats), restitution(if the victims agree), community based rehabilitation(for non repeat offenders who are not deemed to be a ongoing real security threat if monitored), and capital punishment(by choice of the recipient), option for flight/exile if there is a sponsering nation. I think prisons are a waste of money, unless you have safe means of inputting work camps from them. Having them within civilization though only keeps the reminder and ability to visit people to disturb their peace etc... Of course I support ammending the criminal code into a public safety code and a treasury bill. Public safety code would be the only grounds for removal, treasury code violations would have the other options. Provinces would be left to make their own criminal codes for personal crimes, and property crimes not related to the state that often also have tort or civil penalties.. As well as making the distinction between acts of instance and acts that have deep rooted mens rhea. The fact that both elements of a crime exist is only the start - the actual basis of resolving the social conflict requires a proper approach. Putting people who have isolated responses of only one instance do not benefit from being hardened in prison. Also in instances of frame ups etc.. multiple instance frame ups may be easier to detect with multiple offences. Edited September 4, 2010 by William Ashley Quote I was here.

eyeball Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Think of it this way. If 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 sentencing had never been enacted, today's prison expansion would have taken place years ago. So what that would never have stopped Conservatives from whipping up the fear, the loathing and demands for more prisons. If the crime rate goes down too fast they can always expand the criminal code to keep the grist coming. bloodyminded Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Think of it this way. If 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 sentencing had never been enacted, today's prison expansion would have taken place years ago. Prison expansion is not an inevitable natural phenomenon determined by nature. It's a choice made by human beings. Quote As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand. --Josh Billings
capricorn Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Prison expansion is not an inevitable natural phenomenon determined by nature. It's a choice made by human beings. Perhaps I should have elaborated my thoughts. Reduced sentencing resulted in convicted individuals being released prior to having served their full sentences. Thus, serving shorter sentences somewhat alleviated overcrowding. At that time, had those individuals been required to serve their full sentences as proscribed by the courts, overcrowding would have presented a problem. In those days, without a system of reduced sentences the government of the day may not have a had the choice but to build more prisons. IMO building new prisons was merely delayed by the fact that inmates were released earlier than had they served full sentences. With doing away with the 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 sentences, inmates will be required to serve their full sentences as proscribed by the courts, hence the need for more prisons to resolve the problems inherent in overcrowding. I really don't see a problem with building a few more prisons since addressing overcrowding ultimately benefits inmates. It also makes the work of correctional officers a little more tolerable and less dangerous in that overcrowding can produce some very tense situations. capricorn Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Why build more prisons when you can just impose sentences which are a joke and an insult to the victims? I agree Wilber that the sentences imposed for serious crimes are usually way too lenient. At minimum, I hope that convicted individuals would serve the full sentences as imposed by the courts but for that to happen we need more prisons.
