As I mentioned, whereby one wants to blame the economy, you have to look at states with worse economies who are still in power and conclude that the economy wasn't the cause everyone thinks it was. If Gorbachev hadn't come to power and hadn't introduced Glasnost and Perestroika I guarantee you the Soviet Union would be around today. That spurred everything else. It was widely known, right away, in 1986. My parents have told me many stories from that time period. Among them, how when they went to the market to obtain food, there were people on hand with Geiger counters to make sure that the food was not contaminated, because everyone was worried they might unknowingly buy radioactive food. Funnily enough, it later turned out the Geiger counters used at that particular market were all broken anyway. Quote
