bjre Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 (edited) Recently, I find I can not find an article about democracy by a Chinese author from google with the exact author name and exact subject title. Google shows only 2 pages of articles that are all criticise that article. I found the original article easily with another search engine. When I search more, I found it happened also in business area. Brussels to look closely at Google probe http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/e2e24334-89e9-11df-bd30-00144feab49a,dwp_uuid=4dce8136-4a24-11da-b8b1-0000779e2340.html The prospect of Google facing a European inquiry into alleged anti-competitive behaviour appeared to increase on Wednesday, with Brussels’ leading competition official breaking his silence to suggest how seriously he took the issue. Warning about the risks of online market dominance, Joaquin Almunia said he would look closely at complaints from three companies, including Microsoft, that the search company had unfairly demoted rivals in its rankings. I think Google is becoming another corperate media, we will take more an more time to find information that against the idea of those who controls google. That is why it is important to have independent search engines, otherwise, the very little freedome of speech and democracy that has not been taken away completely may be lost soon. Sir Bandelot Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Yes we see how Google is cooperating with governments in countries where there is less freedom of information, by making deals with those governments to restrict some content they do not want people to easily find. Google has no problem acting as controller of the information, even when it goes against our own values of freedom of speech and democracy. There is no reason to doubt that Google is also limiting our own freedom to find information, for those things that might criticize our own government policies. Once again it's about the money. Just curious, what was the other search engine you used to find the informaion? Quote

Once again it's about the money. Google is not limiting your freedom....if anything, it has enhanced your ability to find information. Bonam Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Google is not limiting your freedom....if anything, it has enhanced your ability to find information. It HAS greatly enhanced our ability to find information (along with other search engines). It is hard to imagine now what life was like before search engines, when if you wanted to find out some specific fact.... you'd probably have to spend an afternoon in a library just to do it. Now you can do it within seconds. The internet in general and google in particular have had a transformative effect on our civilization. Quote

There is no reason to doubt that Google is also limiting our own freedom to find information, for those things that might criticize our own government policies. Once again it's about the money. The reasons are: 1. Google put some useless, misleading information at beginning of your search result to make the useful information buried in the garbage that hard to find. 2. Google filter out some information that you will not be able to find with it. Just curious, what was the other search engine you used to find the informaion? baidu.com, sadly, it is also controlled by bosses outside of China. Google is not limiting your freedom....if anything, it has enhanced your ability to find information. By let you rely on it and then make the different voice drown in the sea of misleading information with bias. You are also free to use other search engines, create your own, or visit library book shelves. It is necessary other search engines can beat Google and not control by the groups that currently controls google. For Internet, yes, for Google, it is only partially correct, because now, google is changing to mislead you by provide you key words they select for you and give you result with huge amount of information with the content they choose for you with their taste at the top.
