The American world seems, during a slow-news hot summer, interested in Russian women.

For example, Mel Gibson's girlfriend:

I have a different perspective but I'm still curious. I am intrigued about this sudden interest in young women with Russian names.

Then again, what is happening with young women with Arabic family names? No one says anything. We don't know.

Then again, what is happening with young women with Arabic family names? No one says anything. We don't know.

The Mel Gibson story and the Anna Chapman story would have been big news regardless of the nationality of the women involved.

I have no knowledge of this other person-- some 20 year old who got with one of the surviving Rotting Stones?

russian women are certainly better looking then most Mediterranean, african, south america, most north american women... they are edged by germans, Scandinavians, Czechs, Croatian, Polish, most east European women... and of course the best looking women of all: Estonian...

While a media circus makes sober judgement difficult, we do know--from Gibson's own mouth--that he is bigoted against Jews, bigoted against blacks, and bigoted against Hispanics. We know that he flies into apocalyptic rages. We know that he was an overrated actor, and an overrated director.

Most damning of all, we know he made The Passion of the Christ, a religious pornographic visual text which is horseshit from beginning to end.

Kimmy, I think your comment is naive about how people decide to be interested in a subject - or even why the subject becomes supposedly interesting.

This story is about Mel Gibson-- one of the most popular actors in the world for most of my lifetime-- uttering the "n-bomb" and going on a bizarre tirade against his wife.

Gibson's immense celebrity status and the sensationalistic aspects of this most recent controversy is what has "National Inquirer" magazines flying off the shelves. The story remains the same-- and would be "big news"-- whether his wife were Russian, Australian, American, or Philippino.

That you've somehow concluded that his wife's nationality is a factor in this story is not quite naive... I'd say more along the lines of absurd or comical.

I'll grant you this much about the Russian spy story: it wouldn't have been as fascinating if the spies weren't Russian. Spies would be minor news. Sexy spies would be less minor news. But for obvious historical reasons, the idea of Russian spies has a special allure all of its own.

But I'll concede a point. The CIA, several boomer musicians/actors and the old-line MSM seem fascinated with Russian women.
