Rand Paul, who touts his career as a Kentucky eye doctor as part of his outsider credentials in his campaign for U.S. Senate, isn't certified by his profession's leading group.

He tried Monday to bat away questions about it by calling it an attack on his livelihood, saying the scrutiny stems from his challenge of a powerful medical group over a certification policy he thought was unfair.

Prior to that, he was certified with the ABO. But left them after they began granting exceptions to older doctors to have to recertify.

Before 1992, ABO certification had no expiration, she said. After that, it started issuing certifications that lasted 10 years, but ophthalmologists certified before 1992 were grandfathered in, meaning they didn't have to be recertified.

Rand Paul didn't feel it was right that older doctors didn't have to recertify. How about you punked? Do you think older doctors should have to recertify like the rest do?

Hey Shady I am certified by the Super Nation Board of Ophthalmology, what is it? Well I just made it up and certified myself just like Rand Paul. LOL You seem to gloss over the part in the link that says only 8 doctors in the US have a NBO certification and everyone but Rand has a ABO certification as well. But creating another not recognized by the head bodies in the US health care is also not the way to go.

I do want my doctor to have to re-certify the medical field is always changing and if Rand wants to let his certification run on principle that is fine but it only shows he refuses to keep up with the newest and best practices.

Paul said he helped formed the rival group because the established organization exempted older ophthalmologists from recertification. He likened it to members of Congress passing laws that don't apply to themselves.

In a Libertarian paradise, all doctors would be self-certified. The market would naturally put doctors who killed and maimed people out of business. No need for a government to get involved.

Do we know the laws pertaining to certifications where he practiced? Some of these organizations are essentially optional in that you don't have to. Medical certifications/licenses, on the other hand, are almost inevitably in the industrialized world required to practice, and practicing without this can lead to charges, fines and even prison time.

You don't have to certify with the ABO in Kentucky however 95% of ophthalmologists are certified through them, they were the first certification board in the US and are highly regarded. Paul just doesn't believe he has to play the same rules as everyone else so he went out and just created his own board and declared himself certified.

This is the sort of topic I wouldn't normally find very interesting, but Shady's refusal to acknowledge that it is Rand Paul's very own special board of opthamology makes it much more interesting.
