jbg Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Uh oh. Looks like the Palestinians deserve to be punished by Israel for this act. That is a very sick and offensive joke. Normally I don't take offense to much, and frankly I defend to my death your right to be utterly tasteless, insensitive and downright stupid. You have descended to new lows. naomiglover Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 It's quite amusing to see DogsOnPorch posting about a sign being stolen and calling it the biggest news when in another thread, he's saying, "who cares" that Israel has committed war crimes. The sign is actually stolen. Yeah I read it first thing this morning. I don't question its validity, just wonder what makes you want to post it. I wonder that about many topics myself. But hey...I rarely start threads. You start more... Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Guest American Woman Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 (edited) Uh oh.Looks like the Palestinians deserve to be punished by Israel for this act. One would think a response like this could only come from a low-life ignoramus. It's quite amusing to see DogsOnPorch posting about a sign being stolen and calling it the biggest news when in another thread, he's saying, "who cares" that Israel has committed war crimes. That makes two responses from you about Israel ... in a thread about Auschwitz-Birkenau. Since you start more than enough threads on the topic, I, for one, would appreciate your confining your anti-Israel rants posts to threads about Israel; makes it much easier to avoid them. But what's actually "quite amusing" is your inability to distinguish what DogOnPorch correctly stated, that this was "one of the top stories of the day," from your incorrect claim that 'he called it the biggest news.' Yeah I read it first thing this morning. I don't question its validity, just wonder what makes you want to post it. Did you wonder why the media wanted to report it, too? British historian Andrew Roberts, author of "The Storm of War" and other books about World War II, said the sign would generate huge interest on the burgeoning market for Nazi memorabilia. "This is the biggest thing to happen in that sinister black market in a long time," Roberts said. "I fear that this being the ultimate image of the Holocaust that it's been stolen to order by a collector of Nazi paraphernalia." He said the market for Nazi goods started in the 1960s and is centered in Germany, where it is illegal, Britain and the United States. "When one thinks about what the medals and weapons of the Third Reich are worth, you can imagine what this would be worth to a seriously warped person," he said. link Also found this interesting: More than a million people visit the Auschwitz site every year, but the barracks and other structures are in a state of disrepair and Polish authorities have been struggling to find the funds to carry out conservation work. This week, Germany pledged €60m to an endowment that will fund long-term preservation work – half the amount that Auschwitz memorial museum officials say is needed. link Edited December 19, 2009 by American Woman Quote

Oh well My response wasn't "defensive" in the least; I found it an odd question and responded accordingly. Obviously the thread has nothing to do with the "Israel debate thingy," and it seems to me that anyone of even modest intelligence would understand what it is about -- and respond accordingly. This is a serious theft. It's the defacing of an historic site. It's disrespecting the victims of Auschwitz/the holocaust, those who survived, and their families; Jewish and non-Jewish alike. It's also upsetting to those who care about history, who care about what happened there, and who care about the preservation of such historic sites. Edited December 19, 2009 by American Woman Quote

Wilber Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Of course naomiglover has to make this all about Israel when it is actually about genocide. Not only European Jews but approximately 150,000 ethnic Poles (mostly Catholic) and around 25,000 Gypsies to name some others. What a boor. It's also upsetting to those who care about history, who care about what happened there, and who care about the preservation of such historic sites. I agree with you. It is a horrible theft. But on the other hand, to put things in perspective, it's just a damn sign. A sign. Considering what went on inside those gates, neo-nazis or whoever stealing the sign isn't a that big of a deal. Nobody was killed. Better to take a sign than another life. The sign being gone won't make people forget. Guest American Woman Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 I agree with you. Of course it's better to take a sign than a life. Has anyone even so much as insinuated otherwise? But it's what the sign represented, as I clearly pointed out; it's the blood and sweat behind it. It's the disrespect for the lives, and for someone not to see that, to say in effect 'why bother posting about this?' is what I was responding to, along with the 'is this about the Israel thingy?' The sign can be remade. Nobody would know the difference. Then I guess the Mona Lisa can be remade and nobody would know the difference. And the Hope Diamond can be replaced with a fake, and no one would know the difference. While I agree in principle that things are just things, it's ludicrous to think that "fakes" can just replace them, therefore the theft is no big deal. Quote
