maplesyrup Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Layton's wife will run for Parliament NDP Leader Jack Layton and Toronto city councillor Olivia Chow could become the first married couple in the House of Commons as Chow has decided to run in the next federal election. CBC News has confirmed that Chow will be running in the downtown riding of Trinity Spadina. Quote An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. August1991 Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Didn't Maureen McTeer and Joe Clark run at the same time? Both Chow and Layton are very "Tony" Hogtown. Slick CBC insider types living in the Beaches part of Toronto. Gentrified shops and so on - boring version of Montreal's Plateau. Reform didn't takeover the PCs. The Toronto Left tookover the NDP. Ugh. Quote

maplesyrup Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 Well the Layton-Chow duo have quite a successful track record municipally, so now we will see what they can do federally. Quite the changes taking place on the federal scene, and Canada will be better off for it. Looks like the Conservatives are losing support in the West, and picking up some in Central Canada, the Liberals are losing some of their Central Canada support, and the NDP have rebounded across Canada, to make it a good three way race. maplesyrup Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 Layton's wife seeks nomination as NDP candidate Alan Whitehorn, a political scientist at Royal Military College who studies the New Democrats, said Ms. Chow's candidacy should help the NDP more successfully tap ethnic support from communities such as Chinese-Canadians. "They're a good political tag team and a fascinating power couple."Ms. Chow has tried to take Trinity-Spadina from Mr. Ianno before. They were both candidates for the seat in the 1997 federal election when Mr. Ianno beat her by more than 1,800 votes, according to Elections Canada. In that same election, Mr. Layton ran against Mr. Mills and was soundly defeated by more than 7,000 votes. Ipsos-Reid pollster Darrell Bricker predicts Ms. Chow will give the Liberals a run for their money this time. "If Olivia Chow is running in a federal race, I would be worried about her," Mr. Bricker said. "She has a long record of success in municipal politics, a great profile and good organization -- she knows how to get votes into the box." Goldie Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 Chow says if she did run for Parliament in the riding of Trinity-Spadina, she would run on a campaign of defending the rights of Toronto, saying she is tired of the city being taken for granted by the rest of Canada. She says she still needs to decide whether she would better serve her city locally by staying on city council, or whether she needs to go to Ottawa to wage the fight there. "Certainly a lot of Torontonians are feeling pretty tired of being taken for granted for many years," she said. Boo-hoo, I'm in tears over poor T.O. Is this an election issue for the Chow-Layton team? I hope so cause I'm sure Saskatchewan and Manitoba and even B.C. will want to send MP's to stand up for this cause. Did Michigan stop taking T.O's trash and they've decided to send it to Ottawa? Sorry in advance but I wonder why this statement is not torn apart in leftist anti-regional tort as per any Alberta statement via Conservatives? Hipocrites! Quote
maplesyrup Posted May 27, 2004 Author Report Posted May 27, 2004 NDP leader welcomes his wife to federal race at Toronto nomination meeting Layton made an appearance only after his wife had secured the nomination, leaving the spotlight to a beaming Chow for the first portion of the meeting. Although his candidacy carries a higher profile nationally, Layton joked he's known as "Jack Chow" in the Trinity-Spadina riding, an ethnically diverse community that includes both Chinatown and the city's Kensington Market. And it was clearly her night. Her arrival was greeted with foot-stomping that thundered through the packed and stifling Holy Trinity church - a suitable venue for NDP business given the congregation is known for its political activism and has long ties to the party. Her acceptance speech, delivered while the 53-year-old Layton stood behind her in the dutiful spouse role, standing ever-ready with a supportive smile and timely applause, prompted several standing ovations. Chow, 47, will be trying to unseat incumbent Liberal MP Tony Ianno. She pledged action on a national child care program, affordable housing and an end to a Toronto Island Airport expansion.
