Rahim Jaffer is an entrepreneur from the Old Strathcona district of Edmonton. The Jaffer family came to Canada to escape persecution in Uganda when Rahim was only a child. The government of Idi Amin confiscated their business and their home and sent them as penniless refugees to a new country.

At Confederation, the men who sat in the House of Commons came mostly from Ireland, England and Scotland, with a few from the United States and France.

More than a century later, the seats are being filled with people born in Uganda, India and China, among others.

As of December 2006, 41 of the 308 MPs were born in countries other than Canada. Many of them are eligible for dual citizenship and a second passport.

Not sure what your point is. Mr. Ignatieff was born in Canada and chose not to live here. The MP's you've listed.....and there are many Liberals as well......come from other countries but have chosen to live and work in Canada. What's your point.

Interesting about Tony is his father is Greek Cypriot, Tony last name was Panaji until his mother came to Canada and remarried John Clement who adopted him, who was in 1975, served as Attorney Gen. and as Solicitor Gen under Davis. Also another politican born in the US is May, leader of the Green Party. I believe she was born in Mass.

I'm really at a loss for what this is all about. Being born somewhere else doesn't mean you can't be Canadian. I couldn't care less where my MP lived 40-60 years ago really.

Calgary Conservative Candidate Says Crime Caused By 'Newcomers to the country'!

Richardson is quoted as saying many crimes aren't committed by people who "grew up next door" and immigrants aren't as law-abiding.

"Canada accepts so many refugees, for example. These are people that have had a very difficult life from whence they came. If you’ve been in a refugee camp, then you live day-to-day. And those are troubled people. They come here and, well, it’s easy to take advantage of people that are trying to help. [...] “Particularly in big cities, we’ve got people that have grown up in a different culture. And they don’t have the same background in terms of the stable communities we had 20, 30 years ago in our cities… and don’t have the same respect for authority or people’s person or property.”

Lee Richardson

Calgary Centre Conservative

"Talk to the police. Look at who's committing these crimes," added Richardson, the Tory candidate in Calgary Centre. "They're not the kid that grew up next door."

Is that what your topic was about? Why didn't you start it with this story and a supporting link - which by the way is from last September and has already been run on this board a long time ago. Once again, what is your point, what are you trying to say?

Political jokes aside, it's an awful broad brush to paint all immigrants as criminals, never mind one that aspires to, and achieves public office in a foreign land.

Funny how the "headline" refers to immigrants but in fact Richardson was referring to refugees. There's a big, big difference. Politically insensitive (and dumb), there's probably a point to be made. Refugees often can't be scrutinized as much as immigrants so you're not completely sure what you're getting......and most do come from a life of daily survival that in many, breeds a mindset that owes much to Canada but in others, offers opportunity to keep an "anything goes" lifestyle that combines thievery, violence, and dishonesty.

In Ottawa "swarmings" take place fairly frequently, and the assailants are always identified as "youths". Everyone in Ottawa immediately translates that into "Somalian". Despite their small numbers, the Ottawa Citzen reported last year that more than half the "youths" being held in custody at the Ottawa regional detention centre were Somalians. We don't have such records for the adult prison, unfortunately.
