"Despite suffering a catastrophic defeat on the battlefield, the Tamil Tigers' vast international funding and smuggling network remains largely intact and – with the help of Tamil sympathisers, including those in Britain – the terror group is more than capable of rebuilding itself with potentially devastating consequences for the future of peace in Sri Lanka. As one British-based Tamil Tiger sympathiser told The Independent this week: "The original Tamil Tigers were like the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. What will come next is a Tamil Tiger Hamas."

Tamils living in Tooting or Toronto view the Tigers in much the same way Irish-Americans once thought of the IRA, as romanticised freedom fighters whose brutal tactics can be excused, ignored or forgotten. An estimated 80 per cent of the LTTE's military budget came from overseas, primarily from Tamils in Britain, Canada, Switzerland and Scandanavia.

The ongoing protests in Parliament Square show how the recent conflict has unified Britain's Tamils, particularly young students who have rallied under the Tamil Tiger iconic red flag like never before.

To make matters worse, fundraising will likely continue with little interference from British police or security services. A security source told The Independent that Islamic terrorists are stretching resources so thinly at present that it is unlikely the LTTE's activities in Britain will ever become a priority for the security services."

Seems to me the Tamils will hold tremendous resentment towards the government in Sri Lanka, especially if insufficient aid s provided to the hundreds of thousands living in camps. There is also the possibility that there will be an investigation into war crimes.

"In the last months of the fighting, President Mahinda Rajapaksa callously rejected international pleas for a cease-fire to let civilians escape the war zone, while his troops shelled the area."

In attacking the Tamil Tigers, the Sri Lankan government has struck a vicious blow to the Tamil civilian community.

If the libs had not encouraged and supported a KNOWN TERRORIST group simply for the ethnic vote this would not be a problem for Canada.

As far as I am concerned it is a foreign war - if you come here you become Canadian and help build this country.

If you are a Canadian of convenience - get the hell out and go fight your battles elsewhere.

Take it out back folks - or go home. Plain and simple.

Thewir leadership have renounced violence. Without a base to operate, their extortion wings have no place to send weapons, without weapons they will have a hard time to take up arms again. Without a base, and leadership to enforce compliance, there's a good chance what will happed will be what happened in Northern Ireland, instead of grudingly giving money to the IRA and UDF protection gangs, they call the police. Now the operative outside of Sri Lanka have a vested interest in keeping their gangs together....it was profitable for them and gave them status...all that is gone now.... the war is over.

RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS

The cause of the Sri Lanka Civil War is complexe and historical. In ancient times Tamil had their own kingdom and now they speak Tamil and most of them are hindus different from the majority of Sri Lankan. It is said Tamil historically attaches importance to education and the white colonial authorities offered them better chances of education and job to use them as some kind of underlings to help them to rule the majority Sinhalese Sri Lankan during the colonial time, so they have the most better job, better the standard of living and more chance to enroll universities when the colonial authorities left. After the independency, Sri Lanka government, was elected by the Sinhalese majority, tried to correct the historical problem by discriminating policies such as enforcement of speaking Sinhalese in governmental jobs, setting up harder crierions for Tamil to enroll universities than for Sinhalese, etc. Just as all politicians's policies, someone feels them fair, others think them unfair. When the policy gave more Sinhalese equal opportunity to enroll universities and find good gobs to compensate their historical loss caused by colonists, it also made lots of Tamils lost their opportunities to enroll universities and find good jobs. This was the start of the rebellion.

A military victory can not solve all these problems. Only a political solution can eventually settle them.

The colonialist would have picked the cream of the crop to do their bidding - So I see what happened - The Tamils were akin to say Russian "intelligensia" - and in order for the local brute socialist demi-god to rule - They had to do what Stalin did....If you are dumb - and want to be the smartest guy on the block - you orgainize the stupid people to kill the smart ones - thus the dumb become the smart...sounds like a plan to me.
