waldo Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 More Americans “Pro-Life” Than “Pro-Choice” for First TimeAlso, fewer think abortion should be legal “under any circumstances” PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995 Gallup it is but a single poll... with the described result - "first time (ever)" "pro-life" and "pro-choice" are push-words wrapped around a vague question: "with respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life"...... hey now... if I value the life of the mother does that imply I'm "pro-life" the salient question appears later in the poll and should be the one highlighted: "Do you think abortions should be legal under any circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances, or illegal in all circumstances". Gallup also found public preferences for the extreme views on abortion about even -- as they are today -- in 2005 and 2002, as well as during much of the first decade of polling on this question from 1975 to 1985. Still, the dominant position on this question remains the middle option, as it has continuously since 1975: 53% currently say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances. even if you hold significance to the pro-choice versus pro-life push-wording result... you must/should accept that the results of the more direct question on legality suggests Americans aren't willing to impose that (presumed/so-called) shifting on others via legal means/restrictions.
