What is the deposit per bottle? $500.00 would mean 5,000 bottles at a dime each.

5 and 10 cents. The quarts/large can get 15. 355ml cans get 5 cents, and the large ones 500ml get 10 cents. I have enough empties at home right now to buy 2/24's.

I guess....but you could have purchased the same amount with the deposit money....

Where you getting the deposit money from though?

It's not just beer and wine. It's pop and juice too. Even the little juice boxes the kids take in their lunches are worth a nickle.

I'll rise, but I won't shine.

WTF? Dirty diapers too? What does "recycling" mean in Canada?

pffft. We've been recycling dirty diapers for a couple of years now. You Americans really need to get with the times.

Not in Ontario.

Then why are people still paying deposits and toting empty bottles about the countryside? Put them in the mixed material bin for recycling and forget about them. Sheeeesh...must be a lot of free time in Canada!

Recyclables are different from returnables.

They're both big words and they both start and end with the same sounds, so I understand your confusion.

I guess you have lots of time waiting in queue for health care anyway, so what the hell, schlepping bottles back to the store is good exercise for brain tumors.

I'm in B.C.

Our schools frown on juice boxes and such unnecessary garbage.

No deposit system...just recycle the dead soldiers lika any other bottle. What's the big deal about beer and wine?

They are not dead soldiers, they just need to be filled for another battle. Like fueling up. The simple fact is, you pay for the deposit, and you get it back when you return the empties. So, throw the money away into the recycle bin if you want. It has been this way for decades in Ontario with getting money back from deposits, so I guess we are just used to it all. Like second nature.

And you are going to the beer store anyways. If you think of it as a coupon for a couple bucks off a case of beer, why not take it? Sometimes you have enough coupons to get a free case of beer!

The deal with beer and wine is .. they are good to drink.

So you are telling me that Ontario has not advanced past the bottle deposit paradigm of 40 years ago, probably because of the extra tax revenue? I think a few states still do this, but it's very rare nowadays.

Sure...a coupon that weighs several kilograms. The whole point is that it would be totally unnessary with a straight up recycling program sans deposits.

No point changing something that works reasonably well. The bottles are reusable, no need to melt them and cause more grief. I'm pretty sure more than a few states charge a deposit from the notices you see on bottles of american wine and spirits.

I should add that the breweries in the US are all for non returnables....takes the environmental load off of them and places it on the jurisdiction. The flip side to that is, with the onus of recycling off the manufacturer, they went head first into tins which are cheaper to transport than bottles. That isn't as big of a concern in Canada where all the regular domestic labels have breweries in every province.

OK....this curious throwback and the five cent charge for a plastic bag constitutes a trend.

How much is the deposit for ass wipe?

Ours don't. So far, anyway. A lot of the classrooms collect the juice boxes and use the extra money for supplies or extra field trips. It's an easy fund raiser, if someone's willing to do it.

You're kidding me? You can't carry a couple kilograms? I thought you Americans were tought in nature as well as speach. Go back to the army. :)

You must also understand that The Beer Store and LCBO are both provincial government run entities. And only if local municipality recylcing programs were run as well as they have it at The Beer Store then there would be no need for this deposit thing. I mean, sure you don't get money back for beer caps, but they will take them back if you have a lot of them, or throw them back into the case.

Everything you take from the beer store, you can return. All of it, bottles, caps, boxes. 100% recycling. Your local municipality won't be that diligent or complete in the recycling process.

You are assuming you can reuse ass wipe.

Incorrect. The LCBO is government run, the beer store is run by a consortium of the breweries.

We'd rather carry nuclear weapons.

So what....we have government "beer stores" as well. Why have a separate waste collection channel and effort? Methinks somebody likes to keep the unclaimed deposit money.

What about the beer?
