jdobbin Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 http://business.theglobeandmail.com/servle...y/Business/home Sun Media Corp. has given notice that it plans to pull out of The Canadian Press national news organization, the first major newspaper group to do so since CanWest Global Communication Corp. dropped out in 2007.More than three dozen Sun Media papers, owned by Quebecor Inc., [QBR.A-T] will instead focus on sharing material through an existing in-house news group called Quebecor Media Agency, which will be expanded and get more resources. The present Suns hardly have any local reporters anymore. They totally rely on CP. My guess this means the Winnipeg Sun (among others) will probably stop home delivery in a short time and might be a free newspaper with an online presence. It will be kind of like Toronto Star's Metro papers that operate only with free interns. Quote

It will be kind of like Toronto Star's Metro papers that operate only with free interns. When I take the subway in Montreal, I sometimes read that sheet. (I don't know what it is exactly but it's not a newspaper.)BTW, it's owned by a Swedish company. I guess it's the Abba version of a newspaper. Quote
guyser Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 I guess it's the Abba version of a newspaper. So they'll be singing SOS soon? Sorry couldnt resist Quote
jdobbin Posted March 12, 2009 Author Report Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) Presumably the Winnipeg Sun will rely on the internal Sun news network. If it is anything like Canwest's service, it is inferior to CP. And it doesn't do anything for local news where they are down to 3 reporters for the entire city of Winnipeg. I'd say that this is a case of the rats jumping ship. With newspapers going under and stopping local delivery, I suspect that the Sun is going the way of a free newspaper, no delivery, no local reporters save for a few interns. When I take the subway in Montreal, I sometimes read that sheet. (I don't know what it is exactly but it's not a newspaper.)BTW, it's owned by a Swedish company. I guess it's the Abba version of a newspaper. I wonder if it is written by interns like the Toronto Star version in Toronto. Torstar is the media company that owns and manages the rest of Metro in Canada along with the Swedish company. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...nobodysbusiness Metro, which has published in Toronto since 2000, terminated four unionized staff writers last week and two managers, citing economic reasons. The paper is owned by Torstar, which publishes the Toronto Star and Metro International, which publishes giveaways in a half dozen other Canadian centres as well as numerous cities worldwide. Wild Bill Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 I was a faithful Sun reader for years, practically from its inception. When the National Post debuted they stole some of my favourite columnists. Then the Sun bowed to politically correct pressure and toned down the appeal of their SunShine Girl. They began to take photos of not what a man might want to see but rather what his girl friend thought he was SUPPOSED to like! I started buying both papers but within a few months I bailed on the daily Sun, choosing instead to only get their Sunday Edition. M.Dancer Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 I think I'd be OK if Sun Media disappeared. Quebecor, who owns Sun Media, employs thousands of people directly, and indirectly employs thousands more. They are for the most part a well run company....all media companies are feeling the pinch, it's the nature of the beast...I will certainly earn less this year than last...but in the end, whether it is Quebecor owning the Sun or another, demand for the product exists and it will remain. How will they ever hope to maintain the incredibly high standard of journalism that they've set. I hope they don't have to resort to getting ugly sunshine girls. Quote
BubberMiley Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 For the past year or two, the Winnipeg Sun in my neighbourhood has placed a bunch of unsightly, broken-down old newspaper boxes on street corners and offered free copies of the paper from there. They've only done this in the more upscale parts of the city, as I think they know the people who were buying their papers don't live in these areas anyway. I don't imagine they're offering home delivery here anymore. I also don't see why any retail store in the area would bother selling a newspaper their customers can pick up for free outside. But, in any case, I still don't read the paper but those are sure some ugly boxes. Quote "I think it's fun watching the waldick get all excited/knickers in a knot over something." -scribblet

It is now heading into its second year. They've only done this in the more upscale parts of the city, as I think they know the people who were buying their papers don't live in these areas anyway. I don't imagine they're offering home delivery here anymore. I also don't see why any retail store in the area would bother selling a newspaper their customers can pick up for free outside. Strangely enough, they do still have delivery for those who get the free newspaper. But, in any case, I still don't read the paper but those are sure some ugly boxes. They only have a few local reporters now. It is mostly a wire service. Now it appears they won't even be that. Quote
bill_barilko Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Here in Vancouver the Province newspaper/rag sprung for a bunch of brand new shiny paper boxes-which they rarely fill, not even on Sunday their former Big Day. Quote
