OTTAWA - Paul Martin has broken his pledge to create a more open and transparent federal government by parachuting high-profile candidates into some B.C. ridings, critics charged yesterday.

The Prime Minister, whose government was also accused of undermining the all-party committee investigating the Liberal sponsorship scandal, said he is still committed to eliminating Canada's "democratic deficit."

I don't think he has any idea what a slap in the face he has just given the people who live in BC by his actions today. What arrogance.

I would be very surprised if any of these "star" candidates win their seats.

I have been wondering the same thing for some time now. Do you think he's going maybe, uh, senile?

Like some sort of third-world nutcase, his advisors are afraid to tell him that he's nuts, and anyway, they have too much invested in him.

I barely know Dosanji - but what little I know is not good.

The Liberals have written off the West, apart from a few seats on the Prairies.

It's a joke to think these folks would represent BC.

These appointments are geared towards the Ontario voters. Dosanjh to secure the left vote, and Emerson to ward off the Conservative vote on the right.

76% of BCers said Martin was wrong to parachute in candidates on a BC TV call in show tonight.

Um, these are Canadian Liberals running in BC: A "win" is when they get double digit vote totals. These five have simply been designated losers by the simple fact that they're Canadian Liberals. It doesn't matter if the parachuted candidates lose or the ones picked by the riding association lose. The reason that Martin is doing this is to create some justification for why Dosanjh is given a Senate seat(Then he counts as a "Liberal" senate seat rather than an "NDP")and also lets him distribute more lolly to the parachuted candidates.

I can understand a Scott Brison, or a John Bryden or a Keith Martin, switching, but Ujjal Dosanjh, a former premier of BC.

Although not in the exalted position of Premier of a province of the grand realm of Canada, perhaps Winston Churchill meets your criteria?

He enjoyed crossing the floor & did it twice in his career.
