bill_barilko Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 The article as linked tells an amazing story-a proposed turnaround of almost Brobdingnagian proportions by a company some would say has a lot to answer for.Not a perfect move but bound to shake some dust loose in corporate boardrooms/shareholders meetings. Drug giant GlaxoSmithKline pledges cheap medicine for world's poor The world's second biggest pharmaceutical company is to radically shift its attitude to providing cheap drugs to millions of people in the developing world. In a major change of strategy, the new head of GlaxoSmithKline, Andrew Witty, has told the Guardian he will slash prices on all medicines in the poorest countries, give back profits to be spent on hospitals and clinics and – most ground-breaking of all – share knowledge about potential drugs that are currently protected by patents. Sulaco Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 ANd thus the US ends up being suckas agin! Now we wiull have to spend even more money to subsidize drug development that others will benefit from. I can't wait to see the socialized health care nation clamoring for same breaks - putting even more strain on the US consumer. And sooner or later it will all fall apart, because as prices in the US rise to cover big-pharma's choices to exploit Americans for the world's poor, the subsequent higher costs will result in health care nationalization in the States. Good, I suggest you take money away from the military to pay for it. Nobody is holding a gun to GlaxoSmithKline's head. Sharing knowledge about potential drugs that are currently protected by patents is good in the same way that sharing knowledge about how Linux works was good. For all you know this could lead to saving the life of some child who as an adult galvanizes humanity with an insight that saves it. Ever heard of paying it forward? May cause penal disfunction, watery stool, red sores on the end of your nose - bleeding of the ear drums and blurred visions of the holy virgin..... then they make a pill for 12 cents a pop and charge you 20 bucks...and say - it's because of our branding that entails tons of research and devolpement - looks like they are not very good at it and might lie about their production costs.....have to go now - my bowels just let loose from my facial moisturizing cream. August1991 Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 (edited) The world's second biggest pharmaceutical company is to radically shift its attitude to providing cheap drugs to millions of people in the developing world. There is nothing radical here. The pharmaceutical firms (and Hollywood studios, publishing houses to name a few) have been doing this for decades. This isn't charity. It is good for profits and their shareholders, and good for customers.Apparently, Bill has never heard of price discrimination. Nobody is holding a gun to GlaxoSmithKline's head. Sharing knowledge about potential drugs that are currently protected by patents is good in the same way that sharing knowledge about how Linux works was good. For all you know this could lead to saving the life of some child who as an adult galvanizes humanity with an insight that saves it.Ever heard of paying it forward? Paying it forward is a truly phony idea and only Hollywood could invent such a concept. (Was it free to get into the cinema to see the movie Pay It Forward?) bill_barilko Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 Apparently, Bill has never heard of price discrimination. FYI-Bill has been managing retail/running his own import/export and small scale eco tourism company since christ was a cowboy, I could sit here and pound on this keyboard for hours and hours but why bother? All you proved with your laughably uniformed and snobbish post is you know how to spike your own blood pressure. Just yours though. Quote
