Woodstock

I've lost track of how many times I've heard "Woodstock" invoked over the past couple of days in describing the significance of the Obama inauguration.

"It's this generation's Woodstock!" "The atmosphere in Washington is almost like Woodstock." What does that mean?

The significance of Obama's inauguration is obvious on many fronts. What exactly was so significant about Woodstock?

Millions of people will be able to tell their grandchildren that they were at Obama's inauguration, and be telling the truth.

Millions of people tell their grandchildren that they were at Woodstock too, but most of them are liars.

If they say that "the atmosphere is almost like Woodstock", what are they actually telling me?

Probably telling you there is love for the fellow man in the air. TV pundits are saying that the people in Washington are very happy, polite to deal with (in spite of headaches in moving around) and that waves upon waves of happy people keep flooding in.

Its either that or they are waiting for... (1) rain to turn the fields into muddy acres (2) Country Joe and the Fish to sing give me an F, give me a U....(3) smellie hippy girls to walk around topless.

If anyone says they remember woodstock, they werent there.

But if there is brown acid.....

Kimmy's right. Most of those who claim to have been there are liars.

I was supposed to be there but at the last minute my pals and I wussed out. It was supposed to be only a middlin' sized folk festival. We were going to go but then we thought about the hassles of longhairs like us crossing the border and stayed home.

Ever since I've regretted missing out! That could have been me, sliding naked in the mud!

That's funny because my coworker and I were saying that we couldve taken the day off and watched it on tv and then said we had been there and NO ONE would have known. 2 million people. ANYONE could have been there.

What exactly was so significant about Woodstock?

It was the high point of that generation, as Max Yasgur(the farmer who owned the land where Woodtstock was held) 'the only time half a million people could get together for only fun and music'.

The generation thought they could change the world, and did change the direction of a few things like the Vietnam War, and the manipulation of the media by new groups.

In the end, they ran into themselves as humans and nature took its course.

I blame ABBA for the horrible turnaround.

I'd say it's still going strong, it's just doped up on antidepressants and Viagra these days is all.

I blame the Republicans.

I figure it's a classic case of media laziness...if you notice, there are always pundits who compare contemporary world events to well-known events of the past, not always accurately. Comparing the inauguration to Woodstock is the same as comparing any current right-winger to Hitler, or (my personal favourite) the total inaccuracy of referring to something as being "on acid" (i.e. "this TV show will be like Bonnie and Clyde ON ACID")...used to denote something that is akin to another, similar setup, but Wild and/or Crazy (also Unexpectedly Cool). There's a great British comedian called Bill Bailey who does a whole rap on the inaccuracy of "_______ on Acid" that you should check out. But I digress.

It's laziness through and through -- we put certain historical events or people on these pedestals of importance and then use them as common media-tagged landmarks to which we can apply everything else, ever. ANY large gathering of people in this day and age that is remotely jovial and non-violent would be compared to this false notion of Woodstock as being one big love-in (which it wasn't). I found it funny because when I heard the commentators recalling Woodstock with such nostalgia, all I could think was "You mean the inauguration is a poorly-planned music festival that will ultimately result in several deaths due to an unforeseen rainstorm / mudslide where several people will die of malnutrition and drug overdoses? Cool!"

Boring, stupid pop-culture hype. That's all it is.
