why would we even have a government then? Just vote on everything.

Elected representatives of the people will always be required to voice the opinions of citizens. Representatives must propose legislation, but the people should be able to ratify certain pieces of legislation.

Government is in place as it is and is required. I'm simply stating that we as Canadians need to reign in our elected representatives and especially party elite at the top who make these very large decisions that will effect Canadians for many years both fiscally as well as how we are perceived in the world.

I still maintain there could be a criteria set up that automatically decides if a referendum needs to be held or a polling situation to persuade our elected representative for our riding. Make the MP responsible to the riding and not the party boss. This creates MP accountability to his constituents through out a mandate, instead of only at election time. This improves our democracy by allowing Canadians to have a voice for at least the large issues. Smaller issues could be dealt with as they are now.

To me it'll turn out like American Idol voting and of course the wrong joker will make it far. I remember one year on that show, some redheaded guy even forgot the lyrics to King Of the Road and he still advanced past some of the others who seemed better than him. This electronic voting will just open it to scammers and then the wrong joker will get in

LOL, politicians talk they don't sing. Voting for that show (which I must say I enjoy watching) can have idiots voting as often as they wish... this is why you get the duke of the road screwing up the king of the road and making it through... I know I watched that one also.

The on line voting I speak of would be secure and only one vote per person. Plain and simple and truly democratic.

On Election day nothing changes. Seats would be won or lost based on the results of the first past the post system.

What about KeyStone's fear to see over 100 million Canadians vote on Election Day?

Granted, but what is your point then?

One good point is you can't guanantee 100% that is safe! Didn't someone just hack into the Alberta healthcare system recently?? Nothing online is 100% safe.

100 million Canadians as a critical computer problem.

Perhaps to a fool that could not add two and two together and get four more than once. Nothing is perfectly secure, because nothing is perfect. The banking industry must be looked at to prove the point. How many trillions of transactions and how much fraud?

You know what I am saying, and that is computer "glitches" that visible are damned unlikely.

Adding a lot of zeros to the vote tally should be the goal of all well-intention hackers.

A little obvious would you not say? Aside from that, hackers are not real big on politics. They tend to be a little introverted and seek little challenges for themselves, but not for publicity, that would be their downfall.

Too obvious only for those who want to get (power) away with it.

Benny the democratic process has numerous checks and balances designed for the purpose of elections, and there is therefore reasonable cause to conclude that similiar process would be put into place for any method on online voting.

The experts who can put the security measures in place are also the only persons who can know how to rig the system without being caught.

I still don't trust it--for sure there will be glitches and there is no way to know that the one person vote thing is secure. How will you stop mulitple votes? What about those who don't have computers? My vision of this is Lictor types--right-wingers with their tongues hanging out one side their mouths hitting the button multiple times

I should probably read the entire thread before commenting, but I'm lazy.

Wouldn't there be an ID number unique to each voter? It shouldn't be too difficult to make a system where people can't vote more than once. If it can be done in person, then why not via computer?

I would like this system. I know employers are supposed to ensure you have a 4 hour block to vote, but that's not always done. I know they're legally required and can face a fine, but still.

It would be far more convenient for me to log in and cast my vote than to walk over to my polling station.... but as I said, i'm lazy.

I'll rise, but I won't shine.
