jdobbin Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 (edited) http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories Prime Minister Stephen Harper has appointed new senators, including CTV broadcaster Mike Duffy, former broadcaster Pamela Wallin and skier Nancy Greene Raine, to fill 18 vacancies in the Red Chamber. Guess we know what party Mike Duffy has belonged to all this time. Edited December 22, 2008 by jdobbin Quote

ToadBrother Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Can't recall Duffy being advocate for Senate reform. Well, at least we'll have someone there who knows something about Parliamentary procedure, though I still find the choice more than a little odd. Quote

Moonbox Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Let's be serious here. The Senate is a joke. It was a joke under the Liberals and it's a joke today. whowhere Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Let's be serious here. The Senate is a joke. It was a joke under the Liberals and it's a joke today. Not only is it a joke, it is a sick joke on the taxpayers of Canada. Being appointed to senate equals winning the Lottery. Communist Canada Lives on Quote Job 40 (King James Version) 11 Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. 12 Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. 13 Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.
ToadBrother Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Let's see just how big a Tory cheerleader he is. I dunno. Maybe he is. As a news talking head, he's had to remain somewhat impartial, but maybe he's been giving Conservatives the secret handshake. I just find it strange how Ottawa seems to have become addicted to giving journalists the plumest patronage positions. Quote
Smallc Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Let's be serious here. The Senate is a joke. It was a joke under the Liberals and it's a joke today. It still serves an important purpose. We can't operate properly on a federal level without a senate. Quote
ToadBrother Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 (edited) It still serves an important purpose. We can't operate properly on a federal level without a senate. I don't see any reason why we couldn't have a unicameral federal legislature. The provinces function fine, and in Great Britain, the House of Lords has been so thoroughly castrated that, other than the Law Lords, there doesn't seem to be much purpose. That being said, I think a Senate modeled on the US idea, with separate constitutional powers, but with say, eight members per province regardless of size, with the House of Commons fixed solely on rep-by-pop, dispensing with the age-old constitutional jigging to keep the smaller provinces at a decent level of representation would be very good. As it is, the provincial representation in the Senate is at least partially a fiction. Edited December 22, 2008 by ToadBrother Quote
Ole Dawg Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 I wanted one of those appointments. I could live on 100 or so thousand a year, plus a bunch of flights back and forth. I could hire all my old friends and relatives as my staff. So what if they don't know a thing about politics, just like the ones that are in now. Quote

I doubt Duffy will accept. He's making at least $300,000 a year now as it is. The Senate would be lucky to have him, he's a fair guy. There are a lot of dogs currently sitting on the Senate now. Both Liberal and Tory. Quote "You are scum for insinuating that isn't the case you snake." -William Ashley Canadian Immigration Reform Blog

No, if Duff's smart he'll take it IF he can work until he's 65 and get his pension from CTV, then he stays a senator and gets another pension at 75. It called double-dipping. The senators make 130,000 plus benefits. Quote
