Harper taking to airwaves in bid to save government

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is taking his message to the airwaves tonight in a bid to convince Canadians he is still the best choice to lead the country.

Harper is scheduled to make a national televised address at 7 p.m.

It's the latest development in the political storm in Ottawa after the Liberals and NDP parties formed a coalition, with the support of the Bloc Quebecois, in an attempt to topple the government and take power.

Harper criticized Martin when he addressed the nation as sponsorship. This is different?

What's the point? Does he expect a TV audience to do something about this? Or, is this just pre-election electioneering? I certainly hope he won't lie about our constitutional system again, but I won't hold my breath. I've lost much respect for Stevo these past few days...

So have I. I used to support him...I even voted for him, but after his games in the statement and the lies about the constitution and our democracy that followed....

well the GG is going to be watching harper on TV tonight. If Harper lies to the canadian people, it won't help his case when he talks to the GG about suspending parliament or anything else. She will let the vote happen on monday and let the cards lie.

You see if he lies it will prove the case for the coalition that Harper can not stand up and tell the truth to the public.

If he lies his goose is cooked.

It's going to get even uglier. I'm seeing the Conservative moles on many web boards, and there are attacks on the Governor General herself, some of the worst anti-Quebec rhetoric I've seen since the last referendum, absolutely outrageous claims about how governments are formed and dismissed, ridiculous claims of plots by Quebec leaders to form a separatist cabal to overthrow Canada.

Go and look. All these claims are far too common place to simply be the musings of right wing posters. I'll wager in many cases these posters appeared out of nowhere. This is clearly some major astroturfing to spread disinformation by Tory agents.

To my mind, that's far more poisonous to democracy than anything the Libs, NDP and Bloc are planning. Harper seems quite willing to break the country apart, to give the Bloc what they want (that is, blatant signs of the intolerance and hate coming out of English Canada) to stay in power.

I'm really of the opinion at this point of saying "A pox on all their houses."

If he lies his goose is cooked.

He's already done it: "The highest principle of Canadian democracy is that if one wants to be prime minister, one gets one's mandate from the Canadian people." Though he said three years ago that delaying a confidence vote was "a violation of the fundamental constitutional principles of our democracy," he now seems to think he's been popularly elected as some kind of president. Hypocrisy and lies; these things I expect from politicians, so I tolerate them to a certain extent, but Harper is toying with the foundations of our very system of government: the monarchy, the constitution, and parliament, just to stave off his defeat. It's not only ungraceful, it's dangerous.

I can only fathom that this televised address will be more of the same, unfortunately.

OH I know but going on national TV in a NATIONAL address to lie to the canadian people... its really low.

the GG just landed 20 minutes ago, she's going home to watch this. and if he is out to lie to the canadian people she may have issues with even considering the suspension of parliament.

and as for the moles, mike duffy has said the same thing, that the moles are poping up everywhere.. and protesting outside of the GG's house are staffers that work for the con's from parliament hill. and that she might take note of if she's told about it.

paid gov't employees out there doing the bidding for the pm...

I was funny in parliment harper was spreading so much lies like accusing the opostion of signing the deal withought the Canadian flag behind them, if you watch the video clearly you see the Canadian flag. I don't see how anyone could support this fools delusion to reality.

Would be th same as me sitting here and saying Harper mollests little boys lol

I wonder if we will hear Harper say some of the things he or his party has said in the last days such as "separatist", "socialist", "coup", "undemocratic", "traitors" etc.

Harper has kissed off Quebec and I think we are going to see even more harsh language.

The are many very angry federalist Quebecers from what I hear. Looks like its not the coalition creating the unity problem.

he's kissed off allot of people

- our parliment

- union workers

- BQ

- our Mp's

-liberals

-NDP

funny the thing is the whole reason he is in this mess was his unwillingness to work with others, nothing like throwing fuel on the flames.

The mood was grim. In Harper’s circle, one source said the sentiment was that if the opposition wanted to try their hand at governing during an economic crisis, “Let them have it.”

Several of them conveyed their shock and disappointment over the tumult that threatened to toss them imminently across the aisle and into the opposition benches.
