yawn... better give them a $30 billion stimulus package to utilize that and stabilize the economy then

The $30B would have been been for every province, were it a real number. Money is spent in every province, every year.

I just told you what they contribute. Culture. Do you really need an example? Diversity. Again, I'm sure you can figure that out. Ideas? Everyone offers ideas. your offering them here as ill thought out as they are. Quebec believes in a strong social fabric at the core of their identity. Its something that many of us could learn from.

That's the problem with the left and brainwashed central Canada. You're so spoonfed with broad unspecific platitudes like "culture" and "diversity" you don't even know what it means to provide specific examples.

To be clear: please provide some examples of "culture" and "diversity" that quebec contributes to the rest of Canada, and specifically, the west.???

the majority would have went to ONT and QUE, with left overs for BC, and all that money would come from alberta OIL.. well princess, oil companies will be quick to leave, they are already shutting everything down very slowly

AB - don't even get into this BS with these two idiots. Everyone in the entire world nkows that Alberta is BY FAR a net contributor.

It's a waste of time to even bother arguing with anyone who contradicts this OBVIOUS FACT.

i know, but hopefully they can wake up and see that they need us to survive, and all we want out of ALL of this mess, is just to let us be, we'll contribute to the country, we'll help the rest of the country be prosperous and have a good way of life

the liberals want to rob the west blind, and sifen all the monies into the east and make us a ghost town like we were during the NEP because of those inconsiderate ..... liberals out east, they have no care in the world to BC, AB, SK, or MB... the world revolves around ONT and QUE as far as they are concerned, and its too bad the maritimes are so close and have to listen to those 2 provinces gripe about the west all day every day because their view gets skewed by the liberals brain washing...

let the conservatives run this country for as long as Chretien did, and I guarantee this country will be 10x better than we've ever been in our history as Canadians

It truly is sad that you can't see what an amazing country you live in. I truly hope that one day you'll understand how lucky we are, but until then, you can continue living under your rock and hating Canada with all your might. I don't think you'll find all that much support for your cause.

QUOTE(Alberta_Blue @ Dec 4 2008, 03:28 PM)

excuse me???? what is ONT and QUE's issues??? money and political power... all we out west want, is a voice that will listen to our needs, and not ask for all of our money, tell us how to run our province,

You want that? Get another 8 million or so more people.

QUOTE

tell us that we are the sole reason why the environment is falling... we're tired of everyone out East telling us that we are the problem, but you all want the hand outs and fistfulls of money handed over with nothing in return, not even gratification for all we do for canada

You make your contribution to this country the same as I do. I live in a city that has a net loss of 12Billion dollars in taxes and you will find , maybe, 10 people who want to separate. All this in the size of Calgary.

QUOTE

i think that sums up a lot of our feelings towards the east and this so called CANADA that they speak of... we see a very different Canada, we love Canada, but we love WESTERN Canada

The east isnt your problem, Ottawa is.

its not the fact we hate canada... and i've been saying that, i know seinfeld voiced a different opinion... i love canada to death, and not much will ever change that... but if the east is that desperate to throw out a conservative gov't within 6 weeks after an election to get back their power they have lost, and continue to lose... i am not for that canada!!!

Please stop blaming the east for voting with their conscience. Also, please stop blaming them for wanting to throw out the government. Many voted for Harper. Many didn't. Its part of the diversity of the country. Sometimes its helpful to try to look through the eyes of others. I understand where your coming from. I understand where many of the others are coming from. I can't understand why anyone would want to separate, but I respect the opinion despite my firm disagreement with it.

We as people aren't always happy with election results. The election results are really what created this situation. The other parties had the ability to form a government. They tried and it looked like they failed. Its the way our system works. There's really not much to do about it.

Now, maybe we can fix the senate so its equal across the country. Maybe we can make the commons true rep by pop. No matter what though, it won't change much. Yes, Alberta has a lot of money, but there are 20M people in central Canada. You can't deny them a voice any more than they can deny you one. This country operates on compromise. Its simply the way things are. The upside of that is, the benefits of this country very much outweigh any negatives cause by this compromise.

He lives in Toronto I think. He was saying that Toronto sends out $12B in federal taxes each year.

and i can agree with most of your comments, and i am all for a unified canada, as are the majority of westerners... but we are tired of being pushed around by the 20M people out east... WE finally have OUR voice in parliament after having to deal with decades and decades of french prime ministers who have done nothing but detriment the west with such policies as the NEP... we've sat here and we've worked hard and we've sucked it up... well with what has been done here over the last 2 weeks has been a HUGE slap in the face to all people out west, and has UPSET so many people, that the word "separate" has been discussed at coffee houses, kitchen tables, and water coolers... so until the east will start listening to us out WEST and listen to OUR voices as equally as they listen to ONT and QUE's, they have started a small snowball of separtism out here, that may snowball into something huge

Well, if Alberta went it alone, it would be a land-locked country dependent on its neighbors for all of its transportation and export needs.

And if Alberta joined with BC, then they'd have to put up Greater Vancouver having near majority share of voting power, and I don't think anybody in Alberta wants that to happen. Vancouver politics is just loco.

So you just want to keep narrowing things down until there is complete homogeneousness? Well, I'm sure happy you set the record straight, for a minute there I thought your province was full of uncompromising divas.

Does calgary even generate $12B in revenue, let alone Toronto is a net loss position of 12B.....and I will help him out here-it means we send $12B more than we get back.

I will now hold my breath waiting for the apology.Hell, Im already a bit blue.

Nationalism is for chumps - it just causes problems. Let's talk about what makes sense. Costs and benefits.

If Canada split up - we could certainly do it amicably. No doubt our borders would be as porous - or even moreso - than the 49th parallel.

Everyone always thinks it has to be this tragic nasty affair. I would be willing to take on a reasonably negotiated share of the debt for the chance at a new country.

But really, isn't the REAL tragic and nasty affair Canada itself? Just look at the commons in the past week as an example - and there are PLENTY more where that came from. It's like a disfunctional couple that just keeps going at it - fighting etc. instead of just opting for the peaceful solution: splitting up and moving on.

As a country, we pride ourselves on the bickering and dysfunction that is this confederation. Is this something to rejoice?

I say we set aside these petty emotions and reorganize things. The West would make a great country. Obviously Ontario is happy with itself and Quebec and ruling the roost - and I'm pretty sure the Maritimes are happy suckling any teet they can get their hands on.

We could all get along as happy neighbours. WHy not?

A country isn't a business.

WHy not?

The better question is, WHY?

The better question is, WHY?

Listen. I know that, for a period of time, a dictator can squeeze work, money and power away from his subjects. And, for a time, he can do this while convincing his subjects that they're enslaved "for the good of the country" - whatever that means.

Just look at Kim Jong Il.

Everyone in the country must refer to him as "Dear Leader" - and affectionate term designed to distract from the brutal conditions under which most of the citizens must live.

Now I am not at all making a statement saying that Ontario or the east is Canada's "Kim Jong Il". It's not even close.

However, the comparison is valid when it comes to this meaningless, mushy, emotions talk about the "greatness of Canada". As with Kim Jong Il, it may be great for him, but not for the rest. The same goes for the west.

The pronouncements of "our great country" rings hollow when we have very little in common as regions and the west foots the bill without getting any say in how the country is run; ie. YOU may think it's great. Because it's great for YOU - on the recieiving end of our money.

The only thinkg I can think of that bonds Western Canada with the rest of the country is Hockey, and we could all enjoy that as separate countries - as per how the rest of the world enjoys soccer.

I have nothing further to say to you on this issue. I've already told you that a country is about more than money. The fact that this means nothing to you:

O Canada!

Our home and native land!

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

From far and wide, O Canada,

We stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

saddens me. Not that you care anyway, after all, its only an emotional response.
