World Might Blow Up or Something Today

Organic might be worth twice as much, it has to be or it won't be grown. Your land gets infested with weeds, and you need to downsize the operation to properly farm it. Organic does not yield as much, it is impossible because the weeds compete with crops for nutrients in the soil.

Dude, I work on an organic farm where they still use the pre-pharmaceutical methods of weed control: Crop rotation, mulch, and this ancient, magical instrument known as a `hoe'. A bit of elbow grease early in the season and most plants are now booming. I doubt a conventional farm's yield could even compare.

There's no `infestations' either. Weed infestations aren't the enemy; they're just a symptom of unhealthy soil most times. :P

60-80 bu/acre CWRS #1 Wheat

50-60 bu/acre Liberty Link Canola

I beg to differ.

And that's for a 2000 acre spread to boot.

Beg all you want but I'm not talking about cash-cropping. I'm talking tomatoes, garlic, onions, potatoes, peppers, beans, melons, etc... and a sustainably-sized spread of each.

You were saying that an organic farm could lick a conventional farm's yield's, I provided my yields for what I grow, I would say that not only compares, that licks the organic farms.

If an organic way of farming yields more, why am I using chemicals, machinery, and fertilizer then?

The Irish Banks are all well insured, I don't think we'll be seeing any bank runs over there. They're still better off than Cuba, you won't see any Irishmen on dinghys going to the UK.

"The Irish Government announced the guarantee in an attempt to avert a run on the Republic’s banks. Irish bank shares crashed on Monday amid fears that depositors were pulling out their money."

Cuba plays the garbage economy game, my standard of living is way better than theirs. By that logic, I'm not only self sufficient, I am bankrolling a lot of people, so I should be weathering tough economic times even better!!!

If the US decided to blockade Manitoba because of its socialist NDP government, it would rapidly decline. I know that geographically Cuba, an island, and Manitoba, a province in a country, are not quite the same, but you know what I mean, right? Cuba's economy is oppressed by the US, not the fact that it is a socialist country.

Cuba's economy game sucks, that's why their farmers live in little shanty's and use mules while I live in a big house and use machinery. It's also why they flee the country in rubber dinghy's and some members of their baseball team defected in the most right wing part of Canada.

Quality of life is not just material. I think one of the most surprising things about you is that the supposed hard-working farmer is probably more strident about his financial and material success than most of the white collar paperpushers that populate my part of the province. If you're a Christian, you might want to reread those parts of the Gospel that deal with compassion for your fellow man and the evils of material wealth.

Because your farm is too large.

The Irish gov't guaranteed the banks like I said.

Cuba has oppressed it's own economy, the US can trade with whoever it wants. Want to trade with the U.S., play the game. Manitoba NDP supporters on this forum say that Manitoba's NDP isn't that socialist (i hold my nose when saying that)

So I should be punished for getting ahead?? As for compasion with my fellow man, I have utilized my resources to help my neighbours get their crops harvested free of charge and used my own fuel. You should read the parable about each of the servants getting the bags of gold.

Well if the organic way is much better and yields so much more, I wouldn't need such a big operation with big taxes and big machinery. But since the conventional way is better I need to be a fair size.

It was a reaction to the crisis, though. But in doing what they're doing they're causing problems elsewhere in Britain.

Some day the US is going to be on the receiving end of that kind of arrogance. No country should be forced to maintain a certain political structure to suit the US, not Cuba, not Canada.

Helping your neighbours means nothing if you think everybody else is a loser.

That's really quaint. Live by the sword, die by the sword. The next time I hear farmers bleeting about how hard they have it, I'll think of you and just not care. Obviously these guys are just out to bilk the Canadian taxpayer just like every other special interest group.

Everything that I've managed to find so far suggests that average harvests are about half of what you are stating.

Well son, I'm not average am I? It also helps when I have twice as much rainfall and far superior soil conditions compared to most blokes in Saskatchewan. And that my inputs are more than the average person, and the seed varieties do better.

What are you on, because I don't say anything "nice" I don't help the fellow man, I do that on a personal level and I don't believe in spending other's tax dollars to do so.

Somehow a couple of years ago, you didn't care and that's presented by your attitude and the attitude of lots in that area of the world, well now the shoe is on the other foot. Do I care about the manufacturing sector when I have to pay 50 grand for a truck just to pay for union workers huge salaries to run an air wrench? Someone who's income tax is less than my GST shouldn't be bitching about their taxes being bilked.

Sure, whatever... so in other words you lucked out one year and that necessitates you going around acting superior.

Cubans aren't spending your tax money, though.

So how much of the cost of this truck can really be attributed to the actual manhours as opposed to all of the other overhead costs? The fact that you put yourself in a position to need such an over-priced gas-guzzeler is your problem, so too bad so sad--but again, I don't care.

It's funny how you just happen to luck out one year and suddenly you become so arrogant that you now think people have to meet certain criteria in order to complain... Well, whatever the case, you obviously missed the fact that my reference to taxpayers was simply a poke at the standard neocon whine about people wasting taxpayers money, which also happened to materialize in your reponse.

It's the fact that I have been growing larger than average crops for the duration of my career that has enabled me to survive and prosper.

I go around and act superior because individuals such as yourself portray farmers as white trash, by me explaining my economic situation, I am disproving your little theory.

That truck would be a lot cheaper if the unions weren't into bankrupting their employers. Mexico's manufacturing industry was taking off prior to the credit crash.

I need a big powerful truck for work, oh well now trucks are coming down in value.

Hogwash, your complaining that I am a special interest group that contributes nothing to Canada and is a drain on the tax system. How am I a drain when my GST is more than your income tax? What about all the other taxes I pay? This special interest group enables your lazy ass to go to the store and buy food instead of producing your own. The fact that you go to the store and buy my products proves your a hypocrite. You have no place to complain that I am a drain on society when I contribute far more than you could ever hope to do.

I contribute too.... without the Carbon Footprint of a Dinasaur. :P

BTW, it's about 40 bu/acre of tomatoes, numerous varieties. Pick 16 Bushels, turn around, and the whole field's red again. Not bad, eh?

I'm not too familiar as far as vegetables go. They're too hard to produce on a big scale, far too labour intensive. They only pay if your close to a major centre, which you obviously are.

Correction. After consulting the farmer, it seems I was off a few digits.

There's only 260 plants on a fraction of an acre and apparently the yield is more like 1400 bushels per acre.

The nearby Saturday Farmer's Market plus an on-site storefront help get them sold.

thats why veggie farms arent big, high yields and way too labour intensive. I wouldn't spray that either plus with the organic premium. Grain however is a whole new ballgame.

You should see the movie, "The World According to Monsanto".

i don't agree with the plant breeders legislation. Cargill is a much bigger threat than Monsanto.

GM is a good idea, but I don't agree with hiding behind gov't legislation to make profits, charge lots the first time and let me keep my seed.
