Guest American Woman Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 You could unkowingly have stuff on your hard drive that you never put there. IF it is questionable material, then you are done. You do realize that the same would hold true in Canada, right? Quote
GostHacked Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 You do realize that the same would hold true in Canada, right? Indeed. I am more or less looking from a user's POV for that. American, Canadian, anyone. Quote
Topaz Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 Two women from London On. had a 3 hours fingerprinting session with the US border agents after they told them they were on their way to New O'rleans. to help build homes for the people who were affected by the floods. They were sent back to Canada after the 3 hr session and IF they had said were are going down there for a vacation they would be allowed in, only after they could prove they had enough money for the time they were going to be there. GostHacked Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 And if pigs had wings they could fly.....I'll take my chances while you worry questionable "stuff". Being a SysAdmin, it is stuff I have to worry about. Part of my job. Not to mention I have had a virus on my computer that I did not know where there. AVG did not pick it up, Sybot and Ad-Aware .. nothing. Even a few anti-malware programs did not pick it up. Only when I executed a program I use often did it make itself apparrent to me that my pc has a virus. Even viruses can come back after a fresh install. Also, I do have a couple tools that will allow me to read information of a formatted drive. Even with a new isntall of an OS on top of it. Come home from school one day. Boot up the PC. Do stuff online. One dude chats me up in my MSN list, (I did not put him there), he tells me I have a virus. I poo poo's the fact. He told me, 'you have 4 windows open, and I am going to close these two on you..... the programs closed. At that point, I thanked him for not trashing my drive, and disconnected the network cable and started formatting and reinstalling. You don't worry about it, untill it happens to you. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 ....You don't worry about it, untill it happens to you. Nope..I still don't worry about it. There is nothing on my local hard drive or network directories that can't be restored within an hour. Just practice safe sex and keep the ports locked down and you will be as good as you can be. As a matter of fact, I am fighting with network security guys this week to lighten up let us use our PCs the way Americanskis intended. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

No, that's so '90s...I use an application developed in Canada called TimeTrax to record XM subscription programming from satellite radio...even as I sleep. Condoms break, not to mention people do stupid things. It is a good thing you have back ups, however, the information on your drive or network can be comprimised by something that is there that you are not aware of. I will guess you know a good deal about computers. And for people like us, problems like this are not hard to solve. However for the average user, they have no clue as to what can go on inside their computer. These are the people that are going to get nailed. Quote
