A gross misrepresentation of facts.

1) Most of Antarctica has been cooling and gaining ice over the last 30 years yet the media obsess about a minuscule ice shelf on the peninsula that sticks out of the continent.

2) The annual ice cover around Antarctica is also at record levels. The Larsen ice shelf did not even melt this summer.

3) The ice shelf in question was only a few hundred years old which means it broke off before - most likely during the medieval warm period.

4) The ice shelf is near an area with an active volcano.

On the news this morning Ont. is reporting a 1% raise in temps this year and Great Britian is reporting a 4% gain. We have had a warm winter, lots of snow but very few really cold nights. We never even got down to -30C where I live and we usually have a few nights in the -35 area

Notice bolded word is past tense. This is not happening at some remote date in the future, it has already happened and will continue to.

Can mankind do anything about it? Even if we shut off every factory, pulled all airliners out of the sky and parked our cars, the earth will still continue this warming trend. Its finally the end of the latest ice age.

What we need to do is adapat to the changing earth not run around like chicken littles throwing money at it.

I don't know. The article doesn't say, but check out the comments at the bottom. Most of them seem to believe it's "new" ice. But that does not change the fact that the earth is changing and we need to adapt to the change. Instead of "carbon taxes" (thanks Gordoyouass) we should be determining the effect of rising oceans on our coastal areas and developing a plan to deal with it.

Please explain why that is a bad thing. 30 years ago people would have celebrated warmer winters. Yet today, after decades of brainwashing, warmer winters are seen as bad. In the past people lived in fear of doom predicted by astrologers with star charts. Today we live in fear of doom predicted by scientists with climate models. Yes.

During the last interglacial (maxima 125,000 ybp) the entire West Antarctic Ice sheet dissappeared.

It is also likely that it broke apart and significantly melted during the mideval warm period as well. This is pretty much normal.

Also, keep in mind that these ice sheets extend over the water - as such their melting does NOT contribute to sea level rise.

Nobody is trustworthy. One must look arguements pro and con. Try to verify any hard facts presented and come to a conclusion. When it comes to this story the media left out numerous relevant facts which, if presented, would have given people a competely different perspective on the event.

The latest reports shows that part of the broken ice shelf section is being refrozen back into the shelf.

A study conducted during *3 years* concludes the antarctic lost mass. I find it amusing that you claim a 3 year study is statistically significant when you insisted on another thread that a 10 year trend in temperatures is not statistically significant.

We know that antartica warmed between 2002 and 2005 so losing mass during that period is not a surprise. The real question is what is happening now that antarctica has resumed cooling. We know that the sea ice around antarctica reached record levels this winter. There is no reason to believe that the ice loss from the continent has continued.

Hardly a big surprise since most of the warming and melting is in WEST Antarctica.The article above you posted a was little ambigous.But finally found the quote.That tells us that WEST Antarctica is the main melt area.

Meanwhile there has been a 3 year trend of INCREASING sea ice and cooling temperatures.It is already -84 below zero in Vostock.It is not even winter yet! The Sea ice coverage by area is already at a record level for a fall time of the year.

That 3 year study is already going out of date.

I noticed that you get excited over a 3 year study.But consider 10 years not long enough for a NO warming trend.I see this B.S. a lot in the various forum I have been.It is a bogus argument because there is no defined rule on what or when a trend is considered long enough.
