davegrover
so what do you think of this initiative? i personally think its a good idea...kinda like 'buy nothing day'. i think just getting people aware is the first step. basically what happens is between 8 and 9pm everyone turns off all their non essential sources of energy...lights, stereos, tv, toaster etc.
M.Dancer
It would be even better if it was a night of no moon and a clear sky. With those conditions my tiny 70mm can pick out a few nebulaes and galaxies.....

Yea, it a shame that a majority of living North Americans have never seen magnitude 6 or 7 skies....dark sky conditions. We have to travel over 80 miles to escape from the light "pollution" for star parties.
Drea
That's one of the things I really miss about living rurally up north -- lying out in the middle of a field under a blanket of zillions of stars. There is so much light pollution here that you can actually count the stars you can see. That reminds me... a few summers ago we were up at my dad's place and my son (city raised) says "what IS that high pitched noise?" Crickets! He had never heard crickets before...!
