Stephen Harper is Mr Charisma?

Recommended Posts

Canadians are not known for being an exciting group. Inventors of Pablum and world champions at curling, a sport that ranks with cricket for slowness.

And all three leaders of the national parties are good substitutes for soporifics.

But Steve, -- no Churchill at the podium, that's for sure -- must have depths in the eyes of some if 63% believe him to have good "leadership marks".

But poor Steph - here during decision week, barely a third think of him as a leader.

PM's Mr. Charisma compared to Dion, new poll suggests

Nationally, only NDP's Layton, at 57%, comes close to Harper's 63% rating

Stephen Harper has never been accused of being the Mr. Charisma of Canadian politics, but the prime minister swamps his chief rival, Liberal Stéphane Dion, in the leadership ratings, a new national poll says....

Nationally, it says 63 per cent of Canadians gave Harper "great" or "good" leadership marks, compared with only 36 per cent for Dion.

NDP Leader Jack Layton scored 57 per cent, and Duceppe 15 per cent.

In Quebec, however, Duceppe's leadership rating (63 per cent) was in a virtual tie with Layton's (64 per cent), and only slightly above Harper's at 61 per cent. Dion was dead last in his home province, with 33 per cent of support in the province.

Harper keeps saying he doesn't believe in the polls but when his guys get on camera and if the polls looks good for them they can't help to remark about them. I think most of the polls are asked in Alberta, at least, the ones that make the Harper look good. Of course, maybe the media wants Harper gone too, so they are giving him good polls so he'll have an election and go back to Alberta.

I think Harper is doing exactly what he said he always did with polls and that is not to put much faith in them. He laughs when people mention his high standing as leadership, so that says to me, that he really does not put hard fiath in them right there. Just because he smiles and chuckles, does not mean he thinks they are accurate.

The last Canadian Prime Minister that had real charisma was P.E. Trudeau. Who among who were around at the time can forget Trudeaumania?

For many of those who lived through that era and those who have been critical of his administration, Trudeau was and is Canada's worst nightmare.

Perhaps Canadians today have developed an aversion to charismatic leaders preferring instead Prime Ministers who are rather bland, intelligent and nationalistic, and who would not stand out in a crowd. I think Stephen Harper has those characteristics and meets the expectations of the average Canadian.

Yes, he needs to lose weight, redo his hair and improve his wardrobe. Come to think of it, many of us are in the same boat.

Mr Charisma. What a joke, none of them have the personality nor wardrobe to pull that one off.

A fishing vest in the high heat? Looked like a doofus then and still does.

Cannot speak the English language with any competence? Pathetic.

How about just simply good government, without gut-spilling corruption (Chretien-Martin) or drastic policy lurches with no public support other than the "politically correct" press (Pearson-Trudeau)? Anything wrong with that?

No nothing wrong with that. But they are politicians so corruption is always present to some degree, good govt is always welcome but we aren't seeing that yet, although vastly improved.

The PC press is I dont agree with. I honestly dont think that is the case. Milquetoast and afraid to be hard hitting yes, but PC...ehhhh.
