Bitsy replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I wss given a sample Republican ballot outside my early voting polling place but that did not influence my vote. -
Who are you quoting? Thanks.

It was never planned to be a run if the mill mosque or a mega-mosque. The vision behind it has always been to create a community center for all who live or work in lower Manhattan. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/nyregion/09mosque.html?_r=1&sq=mosque%20ground%20zero&st=nyt&scp=1&pagewanted=all

Americans know little about their own religions.

Me too. There was another question which had Moses as an answer but Moses was incorrect answer to that question. I got 100% -

Upon first read, the agnostics and atheist knowledge does not surprise me, most have formed these belief after being raised in a religious home/environment. I would like to read the study, it sounds very interesting -

5% too high a downpayment for Dems
Bitsy replied to Pliny's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Without those loans and the other benefits, health and education, the government gave the 16 million Americans returning from WWII, our economy would have sunk back into the depression era. Those VA loans and the homeownership that followed helped fuel our prosperity for decades. We owe nothing less to our veterans. -

Bitsy replied to Pliny's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Pliny, your statement is incorrect; George Bush and the Republicans gave us our Zero Down Payment. http://www.portfolio.com/news-markets/top-5/2008/07/23/Bush-Wall-Street-Got-Drunk/ He was cautioned of the costs but he forged ahead. http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2004/10/05/zero_down_mortgage_initiative_by_bush_is_hit/ -
Gotta watch that incrementalism, look who has control of the church now. From Scribblets link:

The Toronto Star hits a new low in its attack on Rob Ford
Bitsy replied to scribblet's topic in Media and Broadcasting
Why is it considered arrogance for a Canadian newspaper to support a candidate? This happens all over the US, from the newspapers in the smallest of towns to the papers in our largest cities. -

If Obama has the stones, he could refuse to implement DADT; a temporary solution but it would be a very popular one with the majority of Americans. -
I am not new to forums and threat drift is “usual” in all forums…nothing sinister in acknowledging thread drifts. Wow, someone that finally got it….thanks for acknowledging it.
-
Thank you for your gracious welcome, and your presumed insight into my arrogance and intent.

As usual, this thread has taken many turns yet the premise and OP posiiton was: Throughout all my posts, I have returned to this premise and agreed with OP and said investigate; if laws need to be change…change them. It’s unfortunate that some have allowed their political prejudices to ignore this point for an opportunity to exhibit their pomposity and presumed insight into this matter.

Nope, just tired of reading the carping that what Avaaz did was illegal. If it's illegal do something to stop them; if it's not, give it a rest, capice?

Where do the profits of this revenue stream go, into whose coffers? I know whose coffers would be filled with these profits if Sun Media attained the must-carry license they wanted, and it won’t be the people of Canada or the Canadian government. I think the shame lies on all of you who will not demand that either your laws are enforced or that they are changed so that an international group or an American PAC group are not allowed to voice an opinion in your country.
-
Nope, just a Usian who enjoys politics and an exchange of ideas. I was told that this was a very good forum with a variety of opinions, and a good mix of American politics. You are correct though that I lean left, but there is no chip on that shoulder, and I regret that you see me in the light. I have tried to be courteous in my responses and attempted to mix a little humor in but it obviously you see it differently. I am a member of Move-On, however, for whatever that is worth.

Or maybe like the UN?

I am not a Canadian and I know nothing about the channels a provider is required to carry. Reading Evening Star’s post, if CBC is funded by your taxpayer dollars, I certainly do think it should be available to all Canadians. Good on you; I hope that never happens in Canada. You are very astute; I wish American’s were as cognizant of what has happened to our country, as you seem to be. I will repeat what I have said previously, quit arguing that fact on this forum and contact your local and federal officials about the illegality of this organization. I do not know your laws but each of you seem to have a knowledge of them….so demand the laws be enforced.

Thanks for the link, even though it seems to be a bit dated, it gave me a connection to Ricken Patel; one good-looking, intelligent man of action who has a strong sense idealism and is willing to put his life on the line in his pursuit of social justice. All I can say, New York’s gain, Canada’s loss. If he is in love with the US, the feeling is mutual.
-
If the gist of your point is that Avaaz has no Canadian presence and therefore is not qualified to initiate a position or to register as a third party, may I suggest that you lodge a complaint against them with your government officials. If what they are doing or have done in the past is illegal and against your laws they should be investigated and made to pay the price. The officials can see that they are punished for their misdeeds; whatever you want to say or rail about on forums is inconsequential and doesn’t solve the problem.

Why should I feel impugned; we have hate speech everywhere, on our airwaves, in publications, in private discussion, in townhall meetings; the petition stated a statement of fact; no reason for Americans to be offended. Geez, hate it is rampant, we burn crosses, we burn churches, we burn abortion clinics, we burn mosques, we have a lot of hate in America and most of it arises from all the hate speech people hear.

Chance are this is what she was referencing but, of course, I cannot speak for her. I think that Avaaz knows who their donors are better than anyone. Founding organization is Move-On. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/billionaire-soros-threatening-to-sue-sun-media/article1711183/

I think lobbying might be a stretch considering it was a petition thanking the CRCT for the fair treatment in denying Sun Media a must carry license. They are not trying to silence another voice; they are asking that the other voice not be shown any special favoritism. I would expect that to sit well with most people. I like a level playing field if I am playing It appears that you guys are the ones who want to silence a voice; the voice of Avaaz, the voice of the people who signed the petition. In the States, anyone can file a petition in support of or against any cause, it is no big deal but you guys have elevated this petition to a completely new level. It is an international organization not an American lobby group, and I do not think they have anything against Suncor; I think they oppose favoritism to a special company and subsidizing it at the expense of Canadians taxpayers.
