Juan Williams Fired From NPR
Bitsy replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
These issues were addressed and apologies issued when they happened, all of them were 15 years old…AIDs, Rapture, Gingrich. The Rush Limbaugh comment was in an email to a private group made by a freelance employee of an independent station. After the private email was leaked, NPR issued a statement disavowing itself from the comment. I am not able to find where anyone from NPR called protestors teabaggers, on air or in print. I would like to see a link for that accusation. This is probably what you are parroting: the NPR website, had an animated cartoon by Mark Fiore entitled “Learn to Speak Tea Bag”. Mark Fiore, a Pulitizer Prize winning editorial cartoonist, is not an employee of NPR. Read what he has to say about the death threats he received for this cartoon…. "Muslim extremist, meet Tea Party extremist. Tea Party extremist, meet Muslim extremist." http://www.markfiore.com/mark-fiore-blog/learn-to-speak-teabag-tea-party-response-to-right-wing-complaints -

That is true but I try to make a distinction when speaking of Fox; I watch some Fox network broadcasts, I don't miss NFL Fox Sunday but do not watch Fox News. Fox News is only available to those who have cable. -

Yes, Fox Business is also a cable offering. -

Definitely not a CYA. I admit nothing just providing a little history for those who might not be familiar with Williams. My experience is that companies have the right to fire without cause, I cannot imagine that NPR is any different, so anyone who argues they were wrong is wrong themselves. You may not think he deserved to be fired, many on the left feel the same way, but NPR has the right to fire him for any reason they so choose. Judging from some of their comments, they had several reasons. Williams has moved on to a place more suited to him and certainly with more money in his future; as Andrew Sullivan said, “On Fox News, if you say something bigoted, you get rewarded, you get promoted, and you get celebrated. And that is a direct strategy. That's a media strategy.” -
Shady, perchance did you notice that no one used Hitler to describe Bush until the interviewer asked them what leader they would compare Bush to? Just another gotcha video by a Evan Maloney, a self-described Libertarian, and described by the New York Times as an ambush interviewer, an ideological opposite of Michael Moore. More fear mongering at the end

Shady, Shady, Shady, I cannot believe you fell for the Move-On video. Obviously, you were not paying attention when this first appeared on the conservative outrage screen. In 2004, Move-On ran a contest, Bush in 30 Seconds, the winning video would be featured in a national ad. They received over 1500 amateur videos, and the one you posted was among them. All the videos were posted on their website for members to vote on and when this ad was discovered, it was immediately removed from their website. Move-On apologized for this video and another one they discovered that they deemed to be offensive. How about showing me where Keith Olbermann, MSNBC, compared Bush to Hitler? That was a great clip, and I agree with everything said by Olbermann but Hitler was never mentioned. I never heard a Hitler comparison from MSNBC and unless you can provide a better link that this one, I fear you are as wrong about MSNBC as you were about Move-On.

Nothing new in that blog just yesterdays news except a picture that was obviously from the 2008 presidential campaign. -

The young minds that I know are not easily manipulated; actually, in the states , it seems the minds of seniors are the ones being manipulated. In the states, there is no electioneering inside the polling place; I am surprised that it is allowed in Canada….here you must be at least 100 feet from the entrance to the polling place. It will be interesting to see how this lawsuit proceeds. Conservatives are quick to yell sue or grievance, just to draw attention to their outrage but usually they fade into the woodwork after their first bit of publicity. We will see how this plays out. -

I feel certain that there is considerable back-story to NPR and Williams, his past does have some blemishes. While at the Washington Post, he was disciplined for “wrong" and "inappropriate" verbal conduct toward women staffers. No surprises there as he was a strong defender of Clarence Thomas against the charges of Anita Hill. BTB, where necessary and responsible, the people involved in the incidents being brought back up after 15 plus years made immediate apologies. -

There is a difference between Fox Broadcasting, which is over the airways and offers traditional broadcasting fare. What most reference is Fox News, which is their 24-hour cable news program that many thought, was an arm of the Republican Party but recently think the roles have been reversed. -

I find it difficult to discuss vague assertions, without the names that “comprise the organization” or programs that offend. Shadow boxing is not my thing NPR’s books are open, if there is any conflict with contributions from George Soros, I feel certain they could be unearthed and aired. -

How do you vote with a "sample" ballot? Are you from the states, Shady? If so, when you vote do you received a separate ballot, one for Democrats, one for Republicans, one for Libertarians, one for the Green Party etc.? In my state, all parties are on the same ballot. Huh, to Teacher's Union, and sorry for your cough. -

Do you have any specifics that they only broadcast liberal views? If you listen to NPR, you should be able to provide me with these specifics. If what you are suggesting is reality instead of right-wing rhetoric, I think both would have shuttered by the FCC, especially under the leadership of Michael Powell with a Republican administration, Congress and Supreme Court. -

And you know that teachers were indoctrinating these students how? In the bigger picture, I do agree with you, however, teachers should not be indoctrinating students. -

So, you and I agree that the rights or the lefts are not the ones scribblet was referencing, I guess we will just have to wait until she gives us a link for her comment. And, yes we Democrats do love NPR and PBS; excellence in broadcasting is becoming very hard to find on our dials and NPR and PBS rarely disappoint. -

The part of my post that you clipped and chose to quote was part of a question to scribblet’s statement that NPR was losing subscribers. I asked for a link, as I was curious who these subscribers might be, knowing well that they were not teabaggers or the radical right, I wondered what Democrats or liberals were pulling their support/dollars from NPR. -

If they are so ill-informed, they should not be allowed to vote -

Maybe it is because I grew up in the segregated south but I have a sense of alarm when I hear a sentence that begins, “I am not a bigot, but.............. scribblet, I am not sure what you mean by subscribers so do you have a link for your assertion that NPR is “already losing subscribers”. I have not read this and find it rather strange since I known of few conservatives and certainly no teabaggers that listen to NPR much less support it with contributions.
