You're comparing the Iranian nuclear program to appeasement!?!?!? You're such a typical elitist western right wing snob. First sign of trouble, losing the debate and you evoke Nazism, ridiculous. The "threat" that Iran poses FAR from Hitler is more of a communist Cuba. Right now you're like the fascist generals of Kennedy's and Nixon's staff "We've got to nuke the commies in Cuba", "If we let Cuba stay red it will ruin our way of life!" And yet Cuba lived (Castro survived something like 700 assassination attempts) and America goes on.

Not to mention OBL has a bunch of relatives. His first wife said that he used to prepare his children for suicide bombings.

Top 10 most educated countries in the world
Post To The Left replied to olpfan1's topic in The Rest of the World
Newsweek had a really cool interactive top ten best countries: http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2010/08/15/interactive-infographic-of-the-worlds-best-countries.html And of course Finland always tops the educational charts for quality: -
Some info: http://www.nowlebanon.com/NewsArticleDetails.aspx?ID=363612 And this interesting quote from a Syrian rebel: http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,2106648,00.html

Throughout the 90s Syria sponsored a brutal proxy-war in Lebanon tearing that nation apart now what goes around comes around as Syria is the site of another proxy battle being fought my the local regional powers. Iran has ordered its Shiite miltias to help prop up the Assad regime while Assad is pulling in favors and enlisting Hezbollah death squads to help out him. On the otherside Sunni Iraqis thankful for the Syrian support offered in fighting the American occupation force are sending guns and ammunition over the border for the opposition rebels. Meanwhile Iraq itself is benefiting as guns and Jihadists are leaving Iraq to fight the Syrian government. The Americans if they are supporting the revolution are finding themselves with strange bedfellows as Al Queda in Iraq has started to support the uprising. So Lebanon is split between pro and anti Syrian groups (even fighting each other in Lebanon), Turkey is anti-Assad, Iraqi Sunnis support the rebels while the Shiites take their orders from Iran and support the regime and Jordan's Brotherhood is calling for volunteers to fight the Syrian regime During the Lebanese Civil-War the Isrealis supported the Maronites and Phalanges who will they support this time?

China defends its veto
Post To The Left replied to Post To The Left's topic in The Rest of the World
Yeah, if the UN was so useless why doesn't America give up its veto? It's just a toothless paper dragon anyway. -

With the death of the KeyStone pipeline I wonder if Harper is serious about selling building a pipeline to the Pacific to sell to China. -

Not that I'm any fan of Communist China but I doubt it wants all of America's energy resources. Maybe if it can increase its economy multiple plans it might need it but I think their whole corrupt system will come crashing down soon and with it their need for so much energy. Its hunger for energy sure makes things interesting for the capitalists. China can pay more money for oil but everyone screams bloody murder when market forces make it so American can't import enough. -

Oh when you said "As long as the energy flows." I thought you meant China exports ... energy. So what did you mean? -

I don't think America imports much energy from China but cheap credit, as long as the cheap credit flows, yeah sure. -

"People's Republic" of corruption and oppression. It's amazing how far the country has come on the back of its people, people it throws aside like garbage when there is a quick buck to be made. -

China defends its veto
Post To The Left replied to Post To The Left's topic in The Rest of the World
I didn't say America I said Western Interests which includes America, the British Empire, the French Empire, etc... -
In a surprise to no one China has defended its veto over further steps against the Syrian regime. Of course China a nation that has been locked in a permanent form of low level revolution for years would veto a resolution that might as well be applied to China itself. They have a riots like the one that rocked the UK and France every week (90,000 riots and mass protests in 2009 alone). At least China is up front about it compared to other Arab leaders (installed or backed by Western interests). Syria president's Bashar Assad had a point when he called the Arab League of bunch of hypocrites. It's almost a comedy to have Bahrain who slaughtered and oppressed its Arab Spring or Saudi Arabia one of the douche baggiest countries in the world, when it come to human rights, lecture Syria on killing innocent civilians.

Iran's assets seized in the US
Post To The Left replied to William Ashley's topic in The Rest of the World
I'm surprised Iran has assets in the States and that it would be stupid enough to still have them especially after what happened to Gaddafi's Libya's assets. That was the reason Venezuela moved its gold right? -

the lucrative international organ transplant market
Post To The Left replied to bud's topic in The Rest of the World
Yeah I'm doubtful about this one too. I remember there was that big scandal when Israeli blood banks were freezing and then throwing out the blood of Ethiopian donors because they were African. I don't see a lot of Israelis taking Arab organs or even blood, maybe if they were selling the organs to other countries like Kosovo did during the war. -
Would the US use a Nuclear Bomb?
Post To The Left replied to William Ashley's topic in The Rest of the World
So were the Japanese, who had two separate nuclear programs. The Americans even thought they tested a bomb in Korea as they retreated against the Russians. -
Iranian centralized command could be wiped out, no doubt. But I imagine they would have local, independent missile stations or even localized individual missiles similar to how Hezbollah works or Saddam's mobile SCUD launchers in the first Gulf War. A carrier is a big target, and it doesn't have much room to maneuver in the Strait. It can probably swat out of the sky around 10 missiles but what about 20 or 30?
-
I think the question is more CAN Iran close the straight of Hormuz. The Iranian navy is basically a bunch of PT boats that can be blown out of the water from a distance before they can cause any damage. The danger with Iran is their Surface to ship missiles which can be launched in mass from the coast. Are they accurate enough? Does the US Navy have effective countermeasures?

Libya Still in civil war
Post To The Left replied to William Ashley's topic in The Rest of the World
It's not going to happen over night. Gaddaffi has spent 40 years destroying his government there are no government departments, institutions everything has to be built from scratch. You can't expect to happen right away. Aren't they on the verge of passing an electoral law?
