BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again
Bryan replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
A lot of union members and supporters don't realize this. They honestly believe employers no longer have any rights to manage their workforce once a union is in the picture. When they find out the hard way that they really do have to do the job their employer hired them to do if they want to keep getting a paycheque, they think they've been hard done by. -
I'm not at all surprised that he deviated from the "party line", since he was never part of this party. The Reform movement that Harper came from was started as a rejection of Mulroney and the PCs. I'd be really surprised if his thoughts were in lockstep with Harper's.

The classifieds often have ads for registered massage therapists actually do the "other kind" of massage (complete with receipt), because it's more lucrative. -

It's been done before. It can be done again. You walk off the job, you're saying you don't WANT the job. Besides that, you don't have to officially fire them, all you have to do is replace them and leave them on strike forever. -

Even if the contract doesn't specifically say. Duties as assigned. -

It does if the employer says they are. -

Sure, I can't fire people who ARE doing their jobs properly unless they are disruptive in the workplace. Walking off the job and leaving kids without teachers is both not doing the job they were hired to do, AND pretty disruptive. -

Sounds more like you haven't. Employers have a lot more rights than you think. You absolutely do not have a right to collect a paycheque. Not actually doing the job your employer is paying you to do is legitimate grounds for dismissal anywhere in the country. -

I would fire people who thought they had any rights to their jobs, and acted accordingly. If I own the company, and I hire you, your job is to do as I say. If you do not want to do as I say, you are the one telling me that you don't want to work here, and I'm just helping you to move on to a place that you do. Fines? No, I would not pay any. Employers absolutely are allowed to fire people who refuse to do what the employer expects. -

Any job has "duties as assigned" outside of what you might consider directly related to your job title. Refusing to do what your employer asks is insubordination. Forget docking pay, anyone who takes "job action" should be flat out fired. -

Is the BCTF willing to move off of their hard line of getting any raise at all? The govt finances are such that what needs to be done is a cut. Best case scenario, they should not be promising anything more than status quo. And yet, they have very generously offered modest increases, and the BCTF is spitting in their faces. At this point, each new offer from the province should be less than the last one. -

As usual, reading comprehension is not your forte. The CD Howe report referenced is from June 2014. OECD had another one with similar results last year, as did the Conference Board of Canada, as well as StatsCan. Here are more links for you to ignore: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/264742041.html http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/manitoba-trails--in-learning-data-213273841.html Here's the Conference Board of Canada Report: http://www.conferenceboard.ca/press/newsrelease/14-06-26/manitoba_earns_a_“d”_on_“how_canada_performs_education_and_skills”_report_card.aspx -
That would be a nice place to start, wouldn't it?

This story was in all the papers last month: http://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/manitoba-students-near-bottom-of-class-among-provinces-for-math-reading-and-science-study-1.1571693 http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/manitobas-bottom-of-the-class-234369251.html http://beaconnews.ca/blog/2014/07/manitoba-reading-math-science-scores-toilet/ We are leading the country in one thing though: Spending more, getting less. The actual report can be found here: http://www.cdhowe.org/warning-signs-for-canadian-educators-the-bad-news-in-canadas-pisa-results-2/26459 -

You absolutely DO read about it in the local papers, regularly. The education is bottom of the barrel, and getting worse year by year. -

You have no idea what you're talking about, come here and see it for yourself. The system has declined drastically. It USED TO be pretty good but it's gotten progressively worse over the past 15 years. -

Our education system is an absolute joke. The NDP have lit piles of money on fire without any regard for results. Our kids' education has fallen very far behind. But hey, at least the teachers can afford their lake houses and boats and things to enjoy while they have the summers off, and everyone else works their asses off to pay for it. -

The number of teachers in other provinces (and how much they make) is completely irrelevant to ANYTHING. They are meaningless numbers. Every province's situation is different. -

That's what iTunes generally does for most new network shows. In some cases, the pilot episode remains free even when the show is several seasons in. -
Seeing everyone's reaction before I saw the video, I was expecting it to be much worse.

Holocaust survivors condemn Israel for 'Gaza massacre,'
Bryan replied to marcus's topic in The Rest of the World
It's a deliberate tactic to shut down debate. They know damn well that anti-semitism has nothing to do with it. Evil is evil, regardless of who is doing it. Pointing out the fact that Israel is actively engaging in war crimes has no bearing on the religion or ethnicity of their citizens. It's about the actions of the leaders and the military of that nation.- 147 replies

Leo is a little late to the party. Harper already made his ALS donation last week.
