  1. Socially, perhaps. Fiscally, obviously not.
  2. China doesn't need to cut their emissions, and neither do we. The whole thing is left wing political BS.
  3. If there is one post that the CPC should have made sure to put an Alberta conservative in, it was finance. I understand the nature of politics is the CPC will have to give the east some positions they may not have really "earned" in order to broaden the base if they ever want a majority. But Ontario conservatives are all too often just Liberals wearing blue suits. We already had that with the PCs. Look what happened to them? Why would the CPC think that would go over now? You have to be more moderate than Reform was, I get that, but for god's sake, at least show good fiscal management. If you are not fiscally conservative, you have no business having the word "conservative" in the name of your party.
  4. Ball rolling on what? Not wasting money on something that could not possibly make a lick of difference is good government.
  5. Awesome logic there. Criminals will break the law anyway, so lets help them do it instead of enforcing the law. Imagine if we took that strategy for other types of crimes.
  6. So how does someone go about "stealing" the car I bought, while still leaving the car in my garage so that we both have it at the same time in two different places?
  7. Moving out of province might be an option to look into in cases of long term or chronic unemployment/underemployment. But for short term job loss, EI serves a purpose. Even in a booming economy it often takes a while to find the right opportunity that you'll actually stay with rather than just bouncing around. I'm mostly opposed to taxes always getting lumped into general revenues. I think a tax that's presented as being specifically for some purpose should be accounted separately and not be available to general revenues.
  8. You keep claiming that he founded his church. Steinbach Mennonite Brethren was founded in 1927, over a decade before this Jake Epp was born.
  9. I didn't expect that you would. I know Steinbach very well. Lots of family and friends in the area. All died in the wool Mennonites. Never met a single one who is anything like what you're describing. The most forgiving and understanding people you will ever meet. Mennonites in the region didn't like way things went with the abortion issue one bit, but they also fully understood that's the way things go in politics. Sure, but weak support by his standards meant he still got almost 5,000 more votes than the other 4 candidates combined.
  10. You need to provide a cite for where Jake Epp was driven out. He never lost an election in Provencher. He retired after 20 yrs in office at a time when the whole party was imploding.
  11. They keep predicting it, but every time they do, the market surges again. Houses still routinely sell in less than a week around here, and there's almost always a bidding war. I really feel sorry for anyone trying to buy a house in Winnipeg right now, because they can hardly even guess as to how much they'll need to bid to get a given house. I know people who have lost out on several houses because the eventual selling price ended up being twice what the property was listed for. How do you plan for that?
  12. No it isn't. Has not been since 2003. Besides, I didn't change the subject at all, YOU are the one who first speculated as to what the woman meant, I only corrected you as to what is closer to what she probably really meant. If anything, your appeal to wikipedia is the real red herring here. Again, no. There are plenty of real penalties that are within the letter of the current law that can be imposed on youths. The problem is, most judges are going for the lightest, least punitive options. Serious prison sentences can be imposed, it's just that far too often, they are not imposed. Every offender over the age of 14 is eligible to be tried as an adult. For serious crimes, and repeat offenders, try them adults as the default, not as the last resort.
  13. Every family has their share of issues. You are completely mistaken if you think the bible belt is nothing but judgmental. Some of the greatest men of the bible did far worse things in their lives. Forgiving others just as God forgave them is one of their core beliefs. It won't be anything. He won by nearly 20,000 votes last time. If he runs again, he might only win by 15,000.
  14. No, I think she probably means "Scrap the Young Offenders Act. These punks are getting away with murder, we need judges who aren't afraid to punish criminals for their crimes."
  15. People in the riding are mostly supportive of Toews. They want him to run again, but they also want him to take the judicial seat if he is offered it. If anything, they're a little dismayed that he has NOT come right out and said he would take the seat. The ONLY thing he's said is that he intends to run in the next election. Toews in judge's robes gets nod in Steinbach
  16. The preponderance of the thread you linked to refutes what you're saying. Lots of actual cases listed. Our current justice system is far too lenient. Toews was working hard to correct that as justice minister. The only legitimate criticism I've ever heard from anyone against anything he proposed was that we might not be able to afford some of the reforms under the current system. No rational person was actually opposed to the changes themselves.
  17. Because the Supreme Court has already judged that the definition of marriage itself is unconstitutional. If the traditional definition doesn't define the limit, one alternative definition can't either.
  18. Each case is different. From career back-bencher to the judicial bench? NO. But if you have a guy of Toews' experience who is willing to do the job, you snap him up right away. From provincial and then federal justice minister straight to the bench? GO FOR IT! You'd be crazy NOT to put pressure on him to take the job, and suspend any and all waiting periods to do it. Same here. In this case, clearly the end justifies the means. The current judges are largely out of touch with reality, and a rational balance needs to be entrenched BEFORE any patronages are cut off for good. Fix the problem, THEN impose the binding policies that will ensure it doesn't get broken again.
  19. I don't have a problem with GMP foods existing. What I don't understand is why the food industry is so opposed to disclosure. I just want to know what is in my food: good, bad, or indifferent. I do not believe that any mfr should be allowed to produce any food product and not be fully transparent with regards to what it is that I'm eating.
  20. I'm not a fan of appointing judges. I think they should be elected. But, appointing is the system we have for now. If you have to appoint someone, I don't think there is anyone more qualified than Toews. Given the current system, this is a non issue if it happens.
  21. Yeah, but people don't usually buy 60 litres at a time of bottled water, at least not at the high price you're talking about. Bought in that kind of quantity, bottled water prices plunge down to 50c a litre or less. I can buy a 24 pack of 500 ml bottles for $3 at Home Depot. The cost involved at that point is simply the packaging and distribution so that you can have a convenient source of something to drink. Keep a case in the garage, and grab a bottle on your way out. I don't see the issue, other than the number of bottles getting recycled vs being thrown out.
  22. I saw the piece they did on Marketplace about this, and was quite appalled that things that were imported and repackaged could legally be sold as a product of Canada. This is a loophole that definitely needs to be closed. I'm totally in favor of an open market with respect to what types of food is allowed to be sold at what cost, but the bare minimum I expect is honest disclosure on the labels.
  23. Of course it's my opinion, I wrote it.
  24. Whatever Suzuki says, the truth is usually the polar opposite.
  25. I very clearly did. Without the right to be alive, any other rights are moot. Pro-Abortion people are arguing AGAINST that unborn child's right to be alive, yet continue to blather about what THEIR rights are. It's hypocrisy.
