Can't speak to what the other places on your list are like at night, but I have a pretty good view of how Winnipeg is. I work nights. I bicycle to work. My 30 minute ride to work takes me right through the middle of what is our "worst" areas (down north Main St, and right through the residential North End). I've never worried one bit about my safety, and no-one has ever hassled me in any way in over 10 years. The people who get into trouble in these areas (the ones who are inflating our violent crime stats) are doing these things to themselves. Drunken fights, drug deals, gang against gang, etc. They don't care about some guy passing by on a bike.

So, who are you supporting, The Strawman Party?

Legalize Marijuana and Prostitution
Bryan replied to PoliticalCitizen's topic in Political Philosophy
It would seriously hurt our relationship with our largest trading partner. No rational Prime Minister would even consider going there, even if that was specifically what he wanted most. -
See, I think it's completely the opposite. The "whatever it takes" approach to the environment is far more of a heart decision. Doing an cost-benefit analysis is using your head.

This election should never been called.
Bryan replied to independent's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I'm wondering if the people who think this election was not needed actually watched question period at all. Bickering was extreme even by house of commons standards. During the first 1.5-2 yrs, things went smoothly. Crazy smoothly. Harper got more done in that time than the Liberals did in 13 straight years. Then it stopped. Opposition was stalling everything, refusing to report to committees, not showing up for votes, constantly threatening to trigger an election. Bickering was extreme even by house of commons standards. It was time. If he didn't jump, he was going to be pushed. The only way he could have NOT called an election was if the fixed election date legislation was specifically extended to cover minority governments. I don't think anyone would have approved of such legislation. Not only that, Canadians as a whole should be relieved that the election call also killed a few bad pieces of legislation (C-61 and C-51 in particular). Besides all that.... If you spend much time HERE, are you not a political junkie? I know in my case, I LOVE election time. I'd be perfectly happy if there were elections every year or two!! -
It's really poorly written, and badly researched to boot. He didn't know much at all about the history of the major religions, so he just made up a bunch of crap, and used that crap as the basis for forming his own religion. ....so I guess it's no different than most religions.

Legalize Marijuana and Prostitution
Bryan replied to PoliticalCitizen's topic in Political Philosophy
This is not necessarily true. A lot of Conservative supporters are very much libertarian with regards to these issues, at least as it pertains to adults. I certainly recognize the hypocrisy of having weed be illegal but coffee, tobacco, and alcohol are legal. Prostitution makes no more sense. It's OK to give it away to anyone you want, but if they pay you it's a crime? The hesitation (and to a lesser extent even the clamp downs) happens because opinions vary widely about how pulling back from that hardline could ever be achieved safely, and how something could be made legal for an adult in their own home, yet still be a very serious crime to expose children to, and to still enforce discretion in general. The thing is, with global trade the way it is, no country (regardless of who is in power) is ever going to present an image of lawlessness and debauchery to it's trading parners, so from a practical sense, complete legalization or even meaninglfiul decriminalization will never happen. -
That's hard to believe, considering the Conservatives increased arts funding by 19% over what the Liberals were doing. It got good spin for a day or two, but the BS the opposition parties pulled this week does not stand up to scrutiny. http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=726631

Disenchanted with Liberals, Conservatives & NDP?
Bryan replied to PoliticalCitizen's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The reason that the Liberals and Conservatives historically have been fairly close in policy and in governamce, is they represent what most people want. The reason fringe parties do not get any appreciable support (let alone form a government), is they represent what most people do not want. I for one am very much opposed to the majority of what the Green Party represents. So while things could happen that might make me change my mind about the Conservatives and/or Liberals (it's certainly happened in the past), I can't foresee anything that would make me even consider voting Green. If you look at the breakdown of popular support, that appear to be the case for the overwhelming majority of Canadians. -
Do you buy tinfoil by the container load?
-
I have, twice. Both times I gave a bogus answer. To be fair, though, I have a strict personal policy of ALWAYS lying for any telephone survey. I just give any random answer other than what I really think. It's just because I fins people who call me at home for surveys annoying.
-
Why not? Most of the people who tell the pollsters that they will vote Green are lying, so wouldn't others do it as well?

Disenchanted with Liberals, Conservatives & NDP?
Bryan replied to PoliticalCitizen's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
If Harper were running in the US, he'd be considered extreme left wing. The CPC is a centrist party that while right leaning, is still significantly left of the Democrats. Canadian centre support always ebbs back and forth between the Liberal and the Conservative parties of the day, it never strays towards the NDP. Depending on the issue, Liberal and Conservative support is almost interchangeable. -
Absolutely. Sure, that "substance" is primarily bullshit and hate (punctuated by brief moments of gob smacking stupidity), but he actually says SOMETHING. Obama works harder than any politician I've ever seen to not say anything when he speaks.
-
Not much to make fun of because there's hardly any substance to him. You'd have to actually say something for anyone to take it out of context to make a joke about it.

People I know who work in social services tell a different story. While there certainly is a genuine need, those who are milking and abusing the system are not an insignificant proportion of their caseloads.

The Conservatives' Unethical Anti-Drug Strategy
Bryan replied to shelphs's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Playing Libertarian with respect to drugs and such is nice in theory. In THEORY, I actually support the idea that adults should be able to make their own choices about what they put into their bodies. I'm not a fan of the pending supplements legislation either. The problem is kids. I support any effort of any kind to protect children from drugs, and I could not care less whose rights are trampled in the process. -
"Hey man, you gonna vote?" "Vote? Dude, the election was last week, we missed it." "Bummer."

Poll: Palin v. Obama
Bryan replied to JerrySeinfeld's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I hate Bush more than any political leader of any country in my lifetime. Palin, I kind of like. -
Agreed on that point. Neither is even close to being on my priority list.

CPC is warning voters about Liberal policy, and reminding them of Dion's indecisiveness. It's the NDP and Liberals that are running the "Harper is scary" campaign. It was the left that ran the "they are right wing therefor they are scary" campaigns against the Reform as well. In Canada, no question, the left are the ideology of fear.

Another firestorm for Harper to put out

Everyone has a different idea of what's funny. Don't like what the webmaster for Gear Up Motors thinks is funny? Don't buy their ATVs.
