  1. I know that this is about polygamy and that I am going off topic, but I thought that people might find this description of "One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dad, Blue Dads" interesting. I viewed it on Amazon. Any thoughts? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...product-details
  2. Regardless of what the government and churches do, I doubt that this institution will fade away any time soon. I don't think you need to worry about that. Of these people who died in war for Canada, I suspect that some were "serial monogamists" and that some were even gay.
  3. Wow!! Did anyone else read that link? Alliance, I think that when schools include homosexuality into the curriculum, they are not trying to promote the lifestyle (or gay sex) to straight students, they are trying to reduce the stigma and high suicide rates amongst homosexuals. Do you think that these curriculums (which include stories like "Ashley's Mums" etc.) will hurt straight students? Are you not confident that teachers can competently accomplish this task? I agree that sex education should explain ALL of the risks about sex including "homosexual sex". But should we not focus on risky behaviours rather than risky individuals? They should have compared the risks (rate of disease transmission) b/w both homosexuals and heterosexuals.
  4. Kimmy...why stop there? I think that we should send even more politicians to Russia for "indefinate stays".
  5. I doubt you will find a CDN in support of Saddam. That is not the issue here. Harper was not saying he wanted to send Hallmark cards to troops in Iraq or have a rally in support of them, he was saying that we should send troops. Let's not rewrite history here. After all of the devastation in Iraq and the recognition that Canadians are generally against sending our troops, he changed his mind. Then, he said he did not change his mind. C'mon! Considering that death is inevitable in war, this was certainly not the issue to flip flop on. This was a huge political blunder and if Stockwell had pulled it.....
  6. Kimmy has raised the key question here. If we believe that there will never be a shortage of people willing to relocate to Canada, then perhaps all is well. But, it is disturbing that we rely upon foreign sources just to maintain our population. It suggests that the costs of raising our children have become so high that we cannot (or are unwilling to) even replace ourselves. Though I believe it to be too costly (time, money) to have many children, I also believe that we have overinflated career drives. Success is driven into us and children are optional. Is it inappropriate to suggest that we should not rely upon foreign sources for population maintenance? Is there a limit to the number of immigrants we should accept? If so, what is it (roughly)? Is not racism different than population management? And BTW, why was this question entirely ignored during the last election? Is it not extremely important?
  7. A real shocker? http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/07/28/godfr...ey_cities040728
  8. I suspect that these applications will go nowhere. When you accept refugees from a country, you are saying that the host country is engaged in atrocities. Canada will never say such a thing b/c it will enrage the US. They should have gone to France.
  9. I think that we should try to expand the number of trading partners and I believe the gov't has tried to do so for decades. The question is how we should do so. Are you suggesting that we establish more free trade agreements (with other nations)? If so, who?
  10. This is an interesting issue. I was very surprised when Proctor lost his riding and I wonder if there is any substance to the challenge. I am not sure if things will change if the NDP gets the extra seat though. What do you think?
  11. Yeah...that was a huge screwup and it really hurt them. In his interview with Mansbridge, he did everything to dodge the issue. It would have been better to just say that a mistake was made.
  12. Does Moore collect all of the profits from his movie(s)? I heard that he accepted a certain amount and donated anything beyond that for F911. Anyone know? I think that he received a great deal of attention and praise because the Democrats did a lousy job of providing opposition to the administration on Iraq. Only Dean and Moore were really vocal in opposiing the war effort.
  13. Thanx August. That helped a bit especially in regards to the patient in the mental hospital. From the reports I read (CBC), it sounded like CHOI was making terrible remarks about the actual patient but from these articles it sounds like they were actually making disparaging remarks about the abusers. I gotta admit, this is a difficult issue especially without actually being able to hear what they say most of the time. I suspect that we are getting a very biased interpretation out in the West.
  14. Are there any lawyers here? I would really like to know if a defense against polygamy charges could be supported by the inaction of the BC government on this issue.
  15. I think it is interesting that the BC gov't believes that they may lose a court challenge to these folks. I wonder what will happen the next time a man is caught with two wives? Will he be able to legitimately claim that this is persecution considering these folks are ignored for the same behaviour?
  16. I see both Charest and Layton are against the CRTC ruling to pull CHOI. Can someone from Quebec put this story in perspective/context for me? I keep looking for info. about exactly what was said (and it sounds like hate to me), but ,of course, they cannot or are unwilling to explain what the problem was exactly. Is this equivalent to some of Don Cherry's stupid comments or did this take on a completely different tone?
  17. I thought that some people might find this interesting. The BC gov't will not touch this one. http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/polygamy/polygamy.html
  18. Oops...my mistake. It is my understanding that restrictions to practice are onerous. Would you agree?
  19. I am not sure why Albertans are considered annoying "whiners" when complaints about federal government policies are made but everything is fine when the BQ and PQ intentionally try to break up the country and make federalism impossible. Am I the only one who thinks as much? "The West wants in" but as the BQ/PQ like to say "Quebec wants out". Greed may have something to do with anger in Alberta, but a devastated economy which helped to place the Ontario economy on the mend were the key variables. Combined with the symbolism of the PM giving the finger (and I do not care why he did this...it was unbecoming of any politician), generated regional politics in this Province. We have had PC rule for 33 years in this Province! 33 years and they show no sign of let up!!! There is and has been no opposition at all regardless of what the Premier does. During the last election, too many people voted against a party rather than voting in favour of something.
  20. We need accountability from the Provinces and the feds. The Provinces accepted less money in return for less accountability. The entire funding system needs to be revisited in terms of accountability. This became clear when they became so upset when Romanow suggested this.
  21. I doubt that taxes give much impetus for leaving the country in favour of another. I could head to the US anytime and have a job immediately, but it would take more than tax savings to get me to go. I suspect that the CMA restricts many immigrants from practicing here. Why do we not offer educational incentives tying scholarships to practice in Canada?
  22. After Bush, Stalin could win in the United States.
  23. Wow...gotta admit, Clinton still has it. What a speech. He makes it look so easy.
  24. If anyone compares the efficiency of both systems, they will be more than convinced that our system is far more efficient. We not only spend less money per capita, but we cover more people with it. I cannot fathom why anyone would support privatization when it just does not work.
  25. Interesting stories MS. Incredible actually. I think that the NDP can form a government if they accomplish the necessary hard work. I would have never thought they would form gov't in Ontario when they did. Of course, it will be a freezing cold day in hell before it happens in Alberta. Did I mention cold?
