Society is a little Guilty of making such an Idol out of such a fool .

They was not lieing in their log books like missmarking cod for redfish. also they may of been slack about handing in log slips , where as the ones with the crystal balls was marking every thing they could mark ,ive even heard of people marking fish on their licences that other boats caught. If we was all in a life boat with only so much food to feed us ,do you think the great big 500 lb man aboard with us should get 10 times as much food ,because he had been eating the most in the past? maybe even let the rest starve so the 500 lb man can stay nice and fat? Would that be good goverment? Why im so against ITQ quotas (along with i don't beleave its a conservation measure ) is its supposed to be based on individuals history of useing the ocean. But the truth is most ITQ quota is owned by people with no history at all ,or little history of ever being on the ocean. I my self have never had a single paycheck from land (never did any thing but fished), I was the youngest captain of a fishing boat in Canada at one point . At 40 i have 23 years in as a fishing captain. I got no History what soever according to our goverment of useing the ocean. Many many like me aeround here . Almost all the quota is owned by men that never been aboard a boat in their lives.or else only fished for 1-2 years . So for eternity i have to pay about all the profit from my fishing efforts to these land loveing business men or their offspring. I know men that was granted quotas on appeals that never fished a day groundfishing before or after . They can draw 100,000 a year for eternity from working mens labour . The fishermen in most cases can't make a cent while the quota holders make hundreds of thousands a year off the fishermens efforts . The fishermen put their lives in danger , work in harsh weather , work hours of 100 hours a week pluss . And are lucky to pay their bills at years end . The business men go golfing , travel , watcht tv . just enjoy life . and some make hundreds of thousands or even millions a year . By useing goverment power to say they own the fish before they are caught. Now maybe im coveting , maybe if i was a ITQ holder i too would be for it . But it just don't seem right to me this ITQ system. It is not a conservation measure its done nothing to protect fish stocks . Actually made things worse . Alot of countrys Outlawed this system. I think in the US its illeagal.

Who told you the system had good affects in New Zealand where our sytem was designed after . It almost wiped out certain species. I hear Orange roughpy was all but wiped out by this system. They hide the facts . This is wipeing our cod out and all fishermen know it and can't stop it

I know america is not perfect ,but we would be alot worse off without them . Probly most of you are not interested in Canadas Fishing laws . I just thought i would throw this topic out there in hopes of educating you on the truths of Canadas Fishery . ITQ = Individual Transferable Quota People actually own the fish swimming in Canadas Oceans , You have to buy them before you can go Fishing to catch them. Ownership of our resources is based on a 4 year period from 1987 -1991. The best 2 of the 4 years was used to give you your share of the TAC (total allouable catch).Ownership of these resources is for eternity . Back then businessmen owned most licences (not the fishermen). So the majority of the ownership of our marine resources is held by businessmen. These business men actually plotted this system and because of them actually helping to design the future they in the 4 year perriod had a crystal ball that most fishermen did not have. The end result is a handfull of business men owning all quota. Some who knew the future was actually misreporting on log slips so as to inflate their catches . The ones who never knew the future was alot of the time not marking their catches. The ones who knew the future went and found sources of laundered money (Boston fish dealers were mofia controled). Their was cases of fishermen being offered (what seemed like)large sums of money in cash on the end of warfes in brief cases for their fishing licences. Fish like red fish and black back flounders had no quotas in them years . so when boat loads of cod and pollack were stolen by crooked fishing companies with a crystal ball on the future .they mis marked them as red fish and flounders. Some companies now have very ,very large red fish and flounder quotas and in truth .they never caught any flounders or red fish ,its all lies. The result of these lies was boats that never fished redfish or flounder haveing large quotas of them on paper . Once on paper its beleaved they have to be caught ,you can't lose these paper fish. So vessels actually fish harder then before , driveing for these red fish and flounders that never did exist .BUT cod ,and pollack live in the same areas as flounders and redfish often . So vessels would stay in areas with some flounders and lots of cod .With no cod quota . They would fish 2-4 days in cod throwing the cod back dead and keeping a handfull of flounders . I suspect that sometimes 100,000 lbs of cod is dumped back dead to get 10,000 -20,000 of flounders.(All because of lies) Most of these business men once getting ownership of our resources .Sold all their boats . (if they even had one to begin with). They just set back now and sell the fish to fishermen before they are caught . The price normally is about half of what the fish are worth . But alot of times they want more then half. I know of cases where they charge .60 cents for the quota then force the fishermen to sell to them for .40 . So the fisherman had to take a .20 cent loss to bring the fish to the warfe. Some fishermen had to throw fish back dead so they could go ahead on other speices. One fisherman told me in 50 days fishing he landed 1,100,000 dollars worth of fish on his deck . He threw 600,000 dollars worth back dead . He had to pay 300,000 dollars in ITQ fees to these rich businessmen. He was left with 200,000 . Out of the 200,000 he had to pay Boat payments , Boat upkeep , Gear bills , Supplies . And crews wages . Out of the 300,000 the business men paid nothing( 0). To sell these fish on a permanent bases the price is 6.00 a lb . Some of these business men sold out to the Goverment (the only buyer) who was buying to give to native bands . One guy sold 3,000,000 . He got 18,000,000 dollars to pocket of tax payers money. one guy sold 2,000,000 . He got 12,000 ,000 dollars. i think 30% of the quota was bought for native bands (1% of population) . The natives in return lease the quotas back to same people the goverment bought it from for almost nothing in alot of cases .. Does it sound like this system is morally right? Canada gets my vote as the most corrupt fishery on earth .

I talked to lots of people that have had severe affects from pot trials . One guy here (an older man)smoked a bunch down the shore with some young guys .When he drove his truck home it scarred him so bad that when stopping at stop signs he would stop his engine and put his keys in his pocket at every stop sign while waiting for traffic. This guy said he would rather drink a quart of rum and drive any day. Some people do get severe affects from pot ,i was one of them. Thats why I have gone over 20 years without touching it. Ill admit that some do seem like it hardly affects them even when smoking a bag every 2-3 days. Some people can hold alot of alcohol before it affects them much also. Alot of people arounf here could drink a pint of rum and you would never know they have had a drink. My point is it seems like the goverment don't care about drugs being used on fishing boats . Its like they have made a place for drug addicts to work to keep them from crime. You can't get decent non pot smokeing men on inshore and midshore boats because of the ITQ quota system robbing most of their pay checks . 1/2 the value of a fish has to be paid to a rich guy setting ashore before you can catch it . Im now buying a trawler with a partner ,we will have to fish cod fish for 50 cents a lb . my longliner can get 1.40 to 1.60 for cod (but can't catch any in a trawler dominated fishery). The trawler will have to pay 200,000 to 300,000 dollars a year in quota fees to rich men setting ashore a year . In the scallop fishing .the first 2.00 a lb goes to men setting ashore . One man owns 20 ITQ scallop quotas . he has these leased to 10 boats if each of these boats catch 5000 lb a week . he makes 10,000 dollars a week of each boat so his income is 100,000 dollars a week and he don't even have to go out door to earn it .Men like this usally never fished a day in their lives. But so much is paid to these ITQ holders that decent livings is a thing of the past for fishing crews . They are almost modern day slaves . So usally all that shows on fishing boats is drug addicts that most industrys don't want. These ITQ owners are very rich men about 20-30 men own the majority of our fishing rights (accept lobster) ,i Beleave they get the goverment to turn their backs on the drug use on the fishing boats so they can keep their incredible incomes rolling in with the use of modern day slaves . The drugs make these men need to go to work bad enough that they will go even if they know they are modern day slaves. This rich ITQ holders do have a problem though with Scallops being sold for cash out side the system .So goverment will have to come address this problem for their rich buddies . They won't stop the drugs , but they will stop people getting drugs by selling outside the system.

I think we should try to be the first nation to have an all gay army , lets just kick the straits out. If that don't work we could get France to protect us from them big bad americans.

Actually I got 3 friends coming here to night to play cards . About an hour after they get here they will all go out behind the house for a toke (they do every time). Then I can win , It does affect them I see the difference in their playing abilities .

Legalizing it probly would be better then what we got now . My brother lives on a Dutch Island ,and he tells me in holland its leagal BUT they are actually stricter on where its leagal . They have asigned places for it to be smoked. Im sure its kept out of jobsites ,unlike alot of Canada. I think to smoke it outside the controled site there is actually harsher laws. The goverment might as well rake in the profits instead of the organised crime groups ........well that is if there is a difference . Sometime s i wonder if they are not all the same thing. I don't smoke pot , and probly never will , But i think we would be better off legalizing it . Putting very strict laws on where it can be smoked . I'll Bet in Sodom and gomorah Most woman knew who fathered their children . You ever notice how many day time shows like to show woman trying to figgure out who their kids fathers are . In California there was alot of Speed abuse . I never seen any pot there . But speed was used by alot in the fishing fleet as well as others in the port area. I fished in maine before and I never seen any drugs on their fishing boats .They had very strict laws against it . I think it was a 0 tolerance policy . If any drugs or alcohol was found on a fishing boat i think the boat was siezed if i remember right. New brunswick was not too bad from my experience ,spent 2 winters there and never seen any drug use on boats . The off shore Companies here in nova scotia have drug testing and i think they have 0 drug use on fishing vessels . Also some native bands have drug testing on their boats and i think they also have 0 drug use on their boats. But the Inshore fleets and mid shore in my opinion have at least 50% of the people working and smoking pot , or other drugs while in fishing operations . I don't think any body even trys to stop it . I don't know maybe its not dangerous ,im just going by what i remember it done to me . And knowing the decisions fishermen are faced with on the job to keep themselfs alive . I just figure its Dangerous . I have had crews aboard that smoked it like cigerettes ,even with me trying to control it .And i found they could not stay awake like non users . When it came to extreemly long days you could never get them out of the bunk .I also found they had severe personality problems . Nicest guy you ever met , too very ugly guy wanting to fight with every body . all acording to amount of pot they could get in them. I try to control it , but sometimes i think its hopeless .They go out on deck when im not looking . Or even on top the wheelhouse . Alot of crews won't fish on a boat that trys to control pot smoking. Some vessels the whole crew smokes it from daylight to dark . and even all night .Some say they can't work without it . Not alot of hard drugs on fishing boats in my opinion ,But there is some i hear. I even hear some Cocaine dealers ,deal on the warfe and take scallops instead of money. Usally they get good measure of scallops so make extra profit . In my opinion the department of Labour is turning their back on drug use on fishing vessels .

Do you think the people of Sodom and Gomorah thought there was anything wrong with their citys? The majority probly agreed with what ever was happening in town.

On a Personal bases Muslims can become friends with christians no problem. And im sure if religion is left out they will like each other. But on a Global world wide scale i beleave its a ticking time bomb . And it will be the cause of many future wars . One of the big problems is Jerusalem, Its the 3d holiest site in Islam . At one point tey prayed faceing Jerusalem instead of mecca . Its number one holy site for jews and also for Christians . I beleave muslim states like Iran will never be happy as long as jews and other occupie Jerusalem . They don't want peace in the middle east such as a 2 state solution .What they actually want is the Jews completly gone off what they consider the worlds 3d most holy site . And I think Isreal knows it . Its a ticking time bomb ,one with no way to defuse . Just a matter of time before it explodes . Muslims don't really want to live in peace in the middle east , They want Jews Gone ! Drove in the ocean is a popular way of putting it . Why do you think peace talks keep getting sabbotaged , They don't want peace , they want their holy city purified . And jews and Christians will never give it up . Jerusalem will someday errupt this world into war .

It seems to me to be very unfair to the children . I imagine they will be teased ect their whole life for something they had no choice in . It just seems unfair to me , im glad i was not raised in a situation like this . Of cource i agree there is alot of children in worse situations in this society today.

As a fishing Captain that has to share the ocean with many other fishing captains here in Nova Scotia im getting a little concerned with the amount of pot and other drugs being used on fishing boats while in the process of fishing opperations . I estamated that 50% of Nova Scotias fishermen(guessing) now days worked in a stoned state . When asking other fishermen i was told i was low in my estaments its more like 80% work in a stoned state . Some vessels have a bag a pot along side the Compass and if they run out the vessel will return to port , they will not fish with out it .I here some vessels are doing many ounces a week while fishing. The Nova Scotia department of Labour seems to either be ignorant to this(but i do think they know about it), Or else just don't care . They are the department responsible for keeping work places safe . I expermented with pot when i was a teen ager And I got completely disorinted . I could not drive a car . I was parinoid . Now i been a fishing Captain 21 years and i know the dangers , storms at sea , Ice , wenches and machinery , marine traffic . And they tell me the Pot of today is 10 times as powerfull as the stuff i expermited with over 20 years ago . To me it acts like the department of Labour is remaining blind of Purpose to this major problem in our industry now days . Even in places where Pot has become leagal its kept out of the work place . But here in Nova Scotia i now beleave we lead the world in Stoned fisherman . Some are smoking highly potent pot like cigerettes while opperating their vessels and lives are at risk. Should the department of Labour here be stoping this ? Or should we all light up and smoke pot on the job?

Cuba looked to me like fertile land , the part i was in had like small mountains and hills and looked like it would be good for farming (but im not a farmer). and there was alot of lobsters as cubans was diveing with no air tank and getting some to give tourist . and seemed to be lots there . I just don't think Cuba should be as poor as it is . Jump over a couple islands to puerta rico (stopped there on way home) and it looks like florida developed and looked like economy ok . And land and stuff did not look any better . Curacao was a wealthy island under the dutch system and they looked almost resourceless to me . The comunist party i think was taking most the wealth ,so normal people just gave up trying to make things better . Ill bet comunist party workers got more then 10 dollars a month! Ill bet they are aloud in resterants and on beaches . I do beleave Cubans are good hearted people from what i seen though . It makes me wonder if poverty and liveing a restricted life don't sometimes bring out the best in people. Alot of very friendly good people there . My sister went there a year or 2 ago and she met a family and she plans to go back every year or so to visit them. very friendly pleasant people in most cases .

LA is an extremely large city. Do you really mean that you saw drug addicts everywhere? Were all the streets dangerous at night? Of course I was not every where in LA , but i did see alot of it and most of it in my opinion was not safe . as i feel safe in most places . Long beach was not bad . I was docked in san pedro and there around the water front the drugs was bad . almost 1/2 local men i met there was doing speed . It was so bad they was stealing every thing off our boat . we had a truck parked on the warfe ,the tires got punctured and nails taken to the paint. most locals warned us not to walk the streets at night alone . I spent a week in miami last winter on our way to curacao too, we was warned there not to go near some neibourhoods.American citys from what ive seen are not the best places to hang , but then im use to small town Nova Scotia ,where most don't even lock their doors . While in cuba , we met a older english man that had sailed across the atlantic alone . On his aproach to Cuba he fell asleep at the helm and put his boats on the rocks . The boat was not damaged that bad and the guy never had insurance . Sence we had a bigger boat with some horse power he came an asked us if we could assist him in salvageing his boat . We told him no problem and we walked to the beach site to look things over ,before we sailed our boat there to tow him off . while there prepareing his boat so we could tow it off (had to patch a small hole) a cuban police type guy came and asked through a translator what we was doing . When we told him we was working to save this mans boat . He warned us that what we was doing was illeagal . He said we was working in cuba without work permits . We went on to tell him it was all volenter and there would be no money changeing hands . He said it did not matter we was still working with no work permit and had to stop . We was not aloud to help the guy save his boat . The guy was extreemly angry as he figgured it was a plot by the cubans to get his diesel engine . So we ended up haveing to leave his boat to beat up on the rocks ( i don't know if the cubans got the motor or not) I know this English man never thought much of Cuba after that . We let him stay on our boat till he found a way to get to Havanah so he could go home . He lost about 30-40,000 dollars because of cuban red tape,as im sure we could of saved the boat if they would of let us. I think if it wasn't for banana trees and coconut trees alot of cubans would be going hungry , id say the communism is not working .

I do agree cuba is safe , i only had one guy call me a gringo and put his finger up like it was a gun and make beleave he was shooting me . Most cubans welcome you with open arms even when nobody is looking .They are taught to like Canadians. I just spent 2 months in LA and i agree american citys are more dangerous by far. I think american citys are as dangerous as any where on earth . My brother sailed in freetown seira leoone why they was a civil war and he said it was safer there then american citys ,he walked the streets alone at night no problem.. He had soldiers with machine guns come and go off his boat steady but they never bothered him. LA was terrible , drug addicts every where ,we did not dare to walk the streets alone at night . I sailed to new york 3 years ago ,it wasn't too bad as it was right after guliano had the place cleaned up , i felt safer there then LA .

I sailed to cuba last year , actually i was on my way to curacao ,but I stopped in cuba for 8 days . It certainly was an experince ! I spent my time in real cuba away from the fancy tourist resorts . Cuban people mostly are very good hearted people ,but poorer then I ever seen before . One told me their average wage was 10 dollars a month. I gave a bartender a tip of 1.50 once and she almost fainted ,it was in a small cuban bar for locals.At least they had beer in that bar.I was in one that only sold local moonshine with no mix ,and the cups was disposables they had to keep. Toilet paper and toothpaste was prized possesions there i actually gave alot of both away and beleave me they appreciated it. I was inside many traditional cuban homes as they would invite me in for coconut milk fresh from their trees . One was a fisherman all he had for gear was hooks so rusty the barbs was gone ,i loaded him up in new hooks . The children appeared to be mostly healthy . but alot of young girls and young woman would solisite tourist trying to sell sex if they could get you in isolated place .As sex was about all most of them had to sell . I heard some was offering themselves for 1.00 -5.00and i also heard rich men was paying ladies to be their home away from home . you could get a lady to be yours for 30-40 dollars a month and rent her a house for you to visit for almost nothing . At one point a cuban couple that we had become friends with ,we asked to go to a marina (tourist one) . Cuban police came and took them away as they are not aloud in these resterants . On the most part though the cubans was good hearted pleasant people . Even the members of the comunist party where nice to us . When we arrived they searched our boat with about 20-30 different people from different goverment branches . They quareented our fridge(the department of vetenarians) because we had canadian beef in our fridge and they was scared of mad cows. A doctor came aboard first to check usall for plages it was almost fun being searched as They use Canadians almost like royalty . I think if a Canadian and a cuban got in a fight they would put the cuban in jail no questions asked as they don't do nothing to affect the flow of canadian tourist dollars. I joked to members of the communist party (security police) that the best thing could happen to them would be if america invaded them as how could it get worse . They just lauphed at me as i was Canadian. They searched our boat almost as hard when we left,looking for cubans trying to escape i suspect. If you go take lots of tooth paste and toilet paper as its in very short supply there . The cuban people are very good hearted people though its worth going there just to meet them. The tourist resorts are not cuba , its not the real thing. And if you go by Boat ,make sure you got screens on your windows . The fly bites ruined my trip. I had to get a doctor give me oitment . Doctors are easy to find there .
