This little blurb from the CBC needs an explanation since I am at a loss myself to come up with one. If anyone here can explain the CEO's comment, I would appreciate it. Small story, I've quote the whole thing. Ottawa tech plant announces layoffs

"No kids allowed!" -- Children in Restaurants
Shwa replied to kimmy's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I think there are all kinds of venues where it is not appropriate for children and parents should be aware of the consequences of the tantrum effect in those that are. Parents must be responsible for their young children's behaviour, there are no exemptions. I actually did a 'training' session with my kids at a local restaurant when they were young. We went in, they were told how to behave, how to treat the servers and so on. They learned quickly and I have never had a problem. Once the younger ones observed their older siblings on such outings it was that much easier. Nothing gets a kid back in line like a scolding from a cherished aunt or uncle, sometimes a grandparent.- 276 replies

And do you think some right-wing propaganda piece is going to adequately explain anything? Come off it. You are not that much of a sucker are you? If you want a "proper assesment" read Canetti's 'Crowds and Power' which doesn't require any ideologies to explain a phenomenon as old as humanity. Did I say the rioters and looters were conscious of their collective decision? I say they rejected the dichotomy for your benefit, not theirs. Bullshit. The article is merely someone fishing around in a barrel full of bullshit trying to make sense of the smell. Groups of people get fed up, they are exploited by an interested cadre and go on their tear. The don't give a crap about the police or law and order unless they are captured. Otherwise, they are more interested in the goods to be gained or inflicting damage. The only lesson you need to know is that unless you have more of the police, the mobs will rule from time to time. Or have you forgot current events in North Africa? A Brave New World indeed.

Cons Slash 700 Environment Canada Positions
Shwa replied to Battletoads's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Just a few years ago I would have scoffed at you. Back in the day it was a much easier move from Banyan & SCO to Linux and it would have been more natural move leveraging the UNIX expertise already gained. At that time Windows was brutal compared to x-windows or even custom UI's and their NT platform was meh compared to even crappy Linux distros. However, with the maturity of SQL, .NET and some other webbing components, MS has caught up. The platform to run applications - especially legacy COBOL apps in a browser window - has gained them the stability for quite a few large federal enterprises. However, the constant requirement to patch Windows enterprise is still a BIG TCO cost along with the usual MS bloat. Not only is the cloud slow, but it is also very vulnerable and the recent hacking scandals just go to show that anything exposed outside the firewall, even tight DMZ's, are still very vulnerable. However, Exchange does OWA and brings some of that internal security along, even when piped out to mobile or remote clients. gmail, as it is out in the present cloud is iffy. Do you think the average person would want their personal information from the government put to such risks? I don't. -
As soon you as you read the phrase "left-wingers" or "right-wingers" you know you are in for another bland, head-shaking load of bullshit. AS IF an ideology can provide a decent moral explanation from one slant or another. In this corner we have a "right-winger" giving us the righteous indignation on the perceived bias of the "left-wingers" towards "the cause." Not sure what is worse - the person who serves this partisan garbage or the simpletons who drink it up like purple koolaid on a hot jungle day. Want to know what the "less-well off" and "students with pink hair and trendy pop-band t-shirts" have in common with regards to "poverty?" Both groups feel impoverished from power so they took an opportunity to grab some when they could. And whether they truly have a choice in their situation, or find it 10 times as hard to achieve the same things as the silver-spoon set, tough shit, they don't care. They took the initiative and made their own statement loud and clear. For a few moments they rejected this horsehit left-right model and went for one of their own. What the righteous right wingers and superior left wingers should be taking from this is that regardless of all the energy that goes into trying to make this into a victory for one ideology or another, anarchy pays no atttention. It will throw a brick through your window and punch you in the face regardless because when the mob rules, the only thing that counts is the mob.

Mammoliti: ‘If I get a smell of communism...
Shwa replied to Shwa's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Seeing how Mammoliti has gone from the left to the right with such power, it won't be long before they are making unflattering comparisons to Mussolini. Except in this case, they might be whispering, 'Il Douché' -
Sure, but this comes as no surprise - Ford's ethics or the Star's distaste for them. Although I did think using the word 'gut' twice, as well as the phrase 'ham-fisted' were nice plays. Torontonians will have to waddle through this administration...

You mean more of a light nicking, rather than a slashing. The article totals about 2% of the federal public service work force. Hardly newsworthy. -

If you buy in to what their slick ad campaigns are telling you, of course. Actually, nowadays, I have to agree. Back in the day, Linux had its chance, the government had its chance and they bought into all that MS slickness too. (and probably some free trips, bling didn't hurt) Plus, until you get a Linux package tight and locked down, it would take a smarter IT workforce to make it happen. Smarter and more expensive. -
Consequences? How could banker and bondholder greed affect anyone in Tottenham or any other impoverished English neighbourhood? I mean, they were already out of work, poor with little prospects. It shouldn't have affected them at all.

I didn't say it was free, just that there could be savings on a custom package. -

Depends on how it is installed I suppose, but not necessarily. It would require a LOT of retraining though. What kid surfs the command line or batch file anymore? -

I don't see any other way of looking at it except he was elected. What does that say about his constituents? They are embarassed or equally flaky. -
Cons Slash 700 Environment Canada Positions
Shwa replied to Battletoads's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It seems, by and large, that the federal government is a Microsoft shop so it must cost them a bundle. They could likely save 100's of millions by porting over to a custom Linux package, but I don't see that ever happening. -

Or the Cons war on the Professional Institute of Public Servants. There was another announcement that the Federal Government has created Shared Services Canada, an agency that will coordinated IT within the bureaucracy. The idea - a good one - has been batted around for decades. Problem is, with all the promises of "savings" in a time of austerity, it might cost them millions: Fact Sheet: Shared Services Canada So there will likely be a need for Shared Services Canada to standardize the email system, which likely means the MS Exchange & Outlook system. However they will need extra licences for those 20% not currently on the MS system. 20% of the estimated 265,000 staff, is about 53,000 licences. Plus extra servers, MS Exchange & OS licences, etc. Luckily, their business plan will likley include an aging out of the old useless licenses and they will be counted towards the normal costs of upgrade over time. Right? New federal IT agency, Shared Services Canada, has no business plan Oh-oh... No business plan, but some nice promises... -
Seriously. Well I guess this sort of thing happens when you go from an NDP MPP, travel across the political spectrum to settle to the right in Ford Nation. Mammoliti: ‘If I get a smell of communism, they’re off the (Facebook) page’ Giorgio will always have a career in comedy, when bizarre comes into fashion again.

There is something wrong with this article, or the research that provides the content. Can't quite put my finger on it, but the end result is that I find it insulting on many levels. "Canadian lifestyle?" Since when has that become a baseline and who decided what it really is? Canadian lifestyle hazardous to immigrant health So what is the message? Maybe this:

What are your views on Paternalistic Legislation
Shwa replied to CitizenX's topic in Political Philosophy
Do you have a sound definition of one of those? I would add a word to you definition of what a law should be and the word is 'harm' and that applies to a person, group of persons, or society as a whole. So your not wearing a seatbelt, increasing the risk to yourself and therefore increasing the costs of the health system through this risk, to me, is harm to the whole. Jaywalking is the same since, if you get hit, you are bringing harm to the driver of the car that hit you, possibly damaging their property. No man is an island. It would be incumbent on you then, to show a law in which no one - no other person, group of persons or society as a whole, comes to any harm because of your actions. I think other posters have expressed this same sentiment earlier in the thread. So now, I ask you, can you show which laws pertain only to you and involve no others? To a degree, yes. When more people get involved in helping to control those things. You still need to show where you are an island with regard to a law or laws. You haven't done that yet, so your premise is false. You remove that person from several other revenue streams by taking away their license. Gas tax, car repairs, etc. To use your own logic: Less government = Less things to control Less roads = Less things to control -
And on it goes. With a month before the beginning of school, will the protests increase? Should they or is this really a non-issue? School board sees duelling demonstrations over Muslim prayers

You have to do it with panache though. The Resurrection is Possible! Help Us Celebrate the Resurrection! ...Of the Jubilee! - New World Order - Freedoms from Bondage! Socialism has Left us - all of us - in the heavy chains of economic despair through endless debt, endless taxes and endless Big Government spending. We are eventually Left with nothing, but a sense of owing - forever. Eternity should be for the Righteous and Faithful not for debt, taxes and Big Government! The Natural Order is being perverted by all these special interest causes, robbing us everyday of our rightful place within the Heavenly Wealth of Paradise. We need to Right the wrongs, throw off the chains of the costs of socialism and the way to do that is by the Blessed Right to Jubilee. Jubilee - Forgiveness for Sinful Debts, Blessings from a fresh start, Abundance once again, free from the tethers of perverted Justice. We all win, all shall be Righteous, the Natural Order restored. Faith, Hope and Charity For All (not just special interest groups)
