  1. Which is why I wanted to know what you meant by: I asked you to clarify what you meant by "these people." Thanks for clearing it up. I almsot had you pegged as a bigot instead of an anti-bigot. Fair enough sentiment. Can they wear tradition clothes too like saris and stuff, or should they strictly adhere to Western clothing standards?
  2. Not to mention all those other arenas and stadiums in smaller communities that are getting slick new retrofits (or brand new facilities) through the Infrastructure Canada Program.
  3. If she felt "uncomfortable" she obviously believes she has cause. The news media, trying to tease a little titillation and luridity for their daily mash up, believes she has cause; or should have cause so long as the story maintains profitable traction. And the NFL, beholden to their own public image of the pure and chaste warriors of lore, must answer such a complaint. I guess. Because everyone has to take everything seriously - even the hotties wandering around the dangling wangs of pro football. Which reminds me of an important historical quote: "Bailiff, whack his pee-pee!" - Cheech and Chong, 1971 But is it actual "harrassment" and should pretty girls all dolled up 'expect' it? No. But are a few uncomfortable moments truly "harrassment?" No, I wouldn't think so. But it is certainly worthy of a lawsuit that will eventually be haggled over in the Supreme Court.
  4. Why ask bloodyminded and not me? Because I will tell you: What I meant is that immgrants of any colour, creed, religion, economic status - or any other distinction including their feverish Islamicity - fall under the protection of the Criminal Code of Canada, just like everybody else. There is no "these people" when it comes to criminality, they are persons who must face the same set of laws as everyone else including non-immigrants. Sure there are advantages and disadvantages to be had, but mainly of a minor type that do not undermine the overall overpowering effect of the Criminal Code. It is only weak-minded people who cannot see that our (Canada AND the US) systems of justice and government are supreme and try and assign their own petty fears and irrational prejudice as something that usurps that supremacy. Now, you can play social politics all you want here, you can espouse your distasteful bigotry and whine about "these people" because "it's a free country" after all. But should you ever want to argue your superior views before the bench here, please let me know when and where and I will gladly come to observe. I might even join in on the all the laughter and merriment that will surely follow. You know, in keeping with the ironic and light hearted tone of your OP. As for Argus, well at least he admits he is a bigot and I greatly respect such honesty. And at least he has no delusions about his postion in relation to everything else. I am sure he has eaten his share of shawarmas.
  5. It won't go over well to those that are actually looking or aware. I could go along with the EI benefit extension continuting in certain regions, but this whole timing seems so interesting in my part of the country. Happy pronouncements about the state of economy, infrastructure dollars moving public construction along, GM saying they have recovered enough to get the lines back up and producing and EI benefits ending. Almost like some serendipitous coincidence. Funny how modern recessions work this way. The Ontario Second Career program however needs a close inspection and upfront public audit. Especially now that all those Second Career students are graduating out of their programs.
  6. OK. No kidding. Are you new to the country? Wow, I didn't know that. Could you cite something that shows us this to be true please? I'm not. You missed my point about the damage we are causing ourselves. You know, like the alcoholic who complains about all the drug addicts. Sure, like all the other customs, mores and cultural laws presently practiced by dozens of other ethnic groups in modern day Canada. They all slide under the Criminal Code too. Or do you fear that Sharia will somehow be exempt from the the Criminal Code and that it's practioners will be able to legitimately go around freely raping and murdering you? You tell me, it's your rationalization. But I suspect you 'rationalize' such opinions from a feeling of powerlessness and that's OK, you are certainly not alone.
  7. So that is it?? Maybe you ought to do a 'slow' and 'careful' read of the English and not gloss over the stuff that counteracts the whiney tone of your OP? Just a suggestion that might keep the depression away. ---- And I answered you. It was a billion dollar injection of money into the local economy, one that is about 10 to 20 times larger than Quebec City. Or did you gloss that over and not make the connection between "fake lakes, paved roads, police overtime and God-knows-what" and job creation, goods and services, etc.? This is the exact sort of whining that makes so many Quebeckers look so provinciale. Quebec City is quaint with its historic ramparts and Bon'homme. Toronto is cosmopolitan and world class and has ten times the population. Do you have some sort of proof that it is any other way? As I wrote earlier, Quebec City getting a nice rink and an NHL team would be awesome, despite the fact that it might never good enough. The Feds redistributing some of the wealth to do is is fine by me. The sooner the better. (And hopefully they will focus on developing players out of the Q and creating teams like the old Habs used to) You mean like all those transfer payments over the past 20 years? I mean, gawd, August, you are asking for it and you complain when others oblige you?
  8. Which is an interesting point of nature versus nurture. Is a modern 14 year old as well informed about the complexities of modern living as a 14 year old in 1710 was about their own time? For instance, what effect did television, violent video-gaming and intense pressure advertising have on the 14 year old from 1710? It would be an interesting study.
  9. Approved what part of the project? Was it in the plan that the developer could simply go in and indiscriminately level the woods?
  10. Exactly. And it also presumes that those in the family class are not working or even professionals in one capacity or another especially in light of the employment rates for immigrants which are not quite the 70% that is suggested.
  11. It is a question as old as war itself - every war has had it's unintended atrocities. But then, why do some people commit murder in the sunshiney happiness of downtown LA? I think you have nailed it though, but I don't think drugs is required to warp perception that much, just an idea. From a core idea, it isn't hard to see a loose leadership group form a cadre that exerts pressure on others to follow. Sometimes it is all about getting away with the first one.
  12. Neither are Timmies customers judging by all the nice rides in their drive-through line-ups.
  13. The Air Canada Centre in Toronto cost $265 million to build ten years ago. How much did the Feds kick in do you know? Of course this arena was built to house professional hockey, baskeball and lacrosse teams. How many professional teams in Quebec City that currently use the Colisee? Minor league hockey right? A few concerts now and then? Of course, there is almost 10 times the population in Toronto compared to Quebec City. And there is no comparison of tourism when it comes to the two cities. Toronto is world class, Quebec City is provincial. There are likely more tourists in Toronto and GTA during the year than the entire population of Quebec City. So what will "we" get for a $200 million investment in a rink in Quebec City? Bilingual signage? Come now... At least the "$1.2 billion" was an injection of money into the local economy which included many goods and services, world exposure, jobs, etc. ---- Hey, I am all for a beautiful new arena in Quebcec City and I think they should have their own NHL franchise. What bothers me is the all the whining about it. Maybe there is some anti-Quebec bashing going on over the proposal, but I am thinking that Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina would all love beautiful new arenas and NHL franchises too.
  14. I think the tune will sound like the Camptown Races: The Constitution's not-a suicide pact doo-dah, doo-dah Bill o' Rights will keep-us intact Oh, doo-dah day. Or something like that.
  15. Gimme a break, that us almost as useless a reply as Shady or Kimmy. Many fighters are no longer in an "active defense" because they are already pooched. And when do they usually get pooched? When they are in an active defense. All you have said here is that once a guy is knocked out or gives up, the other guy has to stop beating on him. Nooo.... So from the few examples you cite, where do you get "a lot of fights?" The fact is, delivering a downward blow to a defended head is still going to cause damage regardless of who has the advantage. And sitting on a guy, pouding away at his head is going to cause damage. Really. Hence, gutless. Yes, cowardly things usually are "LESS dangerous." That's why they are cowardly things.
  16. But the "responsibility" for what exactly? To babysit alone? Drink or smoke? Vote?
  17. Obviously the Tea Party movement is this weeks expose focus for the Star, LOL: Is the U.S. Tea Party movement seeping into Tim Horton’s territory, Canada? OK, OK, its all about the Timmies, even though the peerless leaders do not drink the coffee. But this is a very interesting quote: A "determinedly right-wing fellow from London, Ont.??" That sounds like... Andrew... is that you Shady?
  18. Who wouldn't vote for their Gram-ma-ma? But her achievement might be on the cusp of a new trend: No retirement for these older folks, just work
  19. Not wanting to be disingenuous of course, I revisited your post: Revisited the wesbite, did a little math and still came to the conclusion that your were thoroughly pwned by smallc. Not even close. The only thing left for you to do is getting fitted for your collar, if you know what I mean. Now... if you want to start playing around with definitions to try and get out of being pwned by smallc, you are free to do so. Start here: CIC - Sponsoring your family Added in edit: The Stats Can Daily for Monday, Sept. 7th, 2007:
  20. You mean unwarranted conclusions like this: So please, do argue that a schizophrenic who commits a murder during a schizophrenic episode should be sentenced the same as a 14 year old who violently murders a neighbour to stop the years of sexual molestation to an 18 year old bank robber who shoots the security guard on the way out to the 50 year old who beat their spouse to death during a drunken blackout. You know, with the same "brain chemistry" and all. Oh wait, that is different. Now I getchya.
  21. Well in the link I supplied earlier, it says that a young person can receive an adult sentence where publication ban can be waived, along with a couple of other exemptions. So what is your point again? Oh yeah, 14 year olds committing violent crimes some of which are liable for adult sentencing. So are you advocating that all armed robbery be considered a "violent crime" and then all sentencing for youth under this conviction be the same as adults?
  22. Ah I see what you mean.
  23. When they are convicted you mean, not when charged. And, once their name and picture - as well as their parents names and pictures - are posted, how does that protect society? As some sort of deterrant or just to appease your sense of righteousness?
  24. This is a country wide issue, of course, but this Star article focuses mostly on the impact in Ontario. Ottawa ends enhanced EI program Ok, so the program had a drop dead date and the government is sticking to it. But should they, or should they be extending the program and the Second Career programs which have been a bit of a fiasco for the provincial government.
  25. So are you saying that it is method that is at fault here, that instead of stonings and honour killings it would be more acceptable to kill them humanely with, say, lethal injection?
