  1. But Harper has also said he would maintain the handgun registry and bans on restricted guns. Why would that change under a majority situation? because of a minority in the party who want to get rid of it. I just don't buy that argument, if the Conservatives get a majority they are going to look to maintain it not lose support by pushing through controversial agendas.
  2. When he said this he stressed the long gun portion I could be wrong but I think in the 06 election campaign he said he would maintain the existing handgun registry and bans on all currently prohibited weapons. Based on the official 2006 Conservative Party platform, and also on information posted on the Conservative Party’s website as of January 19, 2006. So, once again I ask why would the Government scrap the handgun part of the registry which has been in tact since the 30's. Conservatives have only had issues with the long gun portion of the registry.
  3. In this debate they've always stressed the long gun part of the registry. Once again when has anyone even mused about getting rid of the registry completely.
  4. Can you provide a link to this I've never seen anyone argue for getting rid of the handgun part of the registry.
  5. With such a huge lead in Ontario I would project the CPC to already be in a Majority situation. However you are right in the sense that if the increase in support is in riddings they already hold then it becomes useless. Anywaysif the numbers hold especially in Ontario i can see 10-12 seats turning blue and Quebec could be interesting there seems to be slight shifting going on in the province.
  6. Quebec doctors urge euthanasia debate I'm very surprised this is even being discussed seriously.
  7. I fail to see how that is relevant to the NDP forming government or not. What determines whether or not they at some time form a government is what ever current policies they have.
  8. I'm far from a fan of the NDP but in many places in the country they have replaced the Liberals as the alternative to the Tories such as BC, Alt, Sask, Man and Ont minus Toronto/GTA.
  9. Like when we weren't going to hear about deficit from him. Sorry just because he doesn't say it now doesn't mean in a year or 2 it wont be a topic of discussion.
  10. What companies have moved to China, Mexico, and Inda??? Anyways this is good news hopefully it gets other canadians confident in the economy but many of us know it is going to take a lot more for the economy to fully bounce back. Also what types of jobs are being created? is it temporary low wage work or long term employment.
  11. This is where I think the Government is heading The Budget of 2011 will not contain the stimulus spending which makes up the majority of the deficit. Also over those years some programs will come to an end And finally they are expecting that revenue will return in a few years once the economy bounces back. As someone else has mentioned "reduce growth" in some programs while in others such as transfers wont be touched. Which would be a very positive thing imo three is no need to make the same mistakes twice in downloading on to the Provinces. Not in the current climate but in a few years I would suggest a temporary increase in the GST. Maybe in a year or 2, which might lead to stimulus in the economy where people will spending before they are hit with the higher taxes especially on high end products. If these assumtions are correct and there is no guarantee they are then we might have a shorter deficit then we expect. However, it depends on how much/how quick the economy bounces back and whether the Government will be able to make the tough decisions on taxes/spending cuts.
  12. I find it interesting that Ignatieff has position his party as the official opposition once again but there isn't much focus on this. While he opposes Harper at every step he forces Mr. Layton in an uncomfortable situation where he has to support the Conservative Government. In the long run this strategy might actually work; how long can NDP supporters stand by and watch their guy support the “Evil Harper Neo-Con reptilian kitten eaters”.
  13. Reasons why Harper wont call a snap election this time. 1) He has only been in office for 1 year compared to 2.75 last year. 2) Despite what the polls say Conservative support is not very solid. 3) Winning a majority is a must in the next election and there is no guarantee he wins it at this time. If Harper only gets in with a minority people within the party will be looking for change. 4) People really don't want to head to the polls for the 5th time this decade especially if it delivers a similar government. 5) It will totally go against his rhetoric of this not being a good time for an election because of the fragile economy. Stephen Harper may be a lot of things but he is no dummy. In November he will be mainly on the World stage at Apec, India, and the Common Wealth. in Dec/Jan the House will be mainly prorogued In Feb will be the Olympics nobody should be in the mood for an election. In March should come the Budget, but this Gov has had earlier budgets- this will be the first oportunity for an election. Personally I'm projecting a late Summer/early Fall Election.
