Despite data showing that COVID-19 vaccines are effective at preventing serious illness from the Delta variant, some Florida hospitals are still being overwhelmed by virus patients who are mostly unvaccinated. The New York Times found two University of Florida hospitals in Jacksonville that are grappling with the highest number of COVID-19 patients they’ve had since the start of the pandemic, with growing fear over when it may actually end. https://www.thedailybeast.com/some-florida-hospitals-seeing-record-number-of-covid-cases

Florida reported 26,203 more COVID-19 cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. The state also reported nine new deaths the day before. In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,130,144 confirmed COVID cases statewide and 42,731 deaths. Wednesday’s new cases broke the state’s current single-day case total record. Aug. 12 last held that title with 25,957 cases on a single day, according to Herald calculations of data provided by the CDC. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article253735048.html

A few months ago, Gov. Ron DeSantis, Republican of Florida, declared his hands-off approach to COVID-19 “a tremendous success.” Politico announced that he had “won the pandemic.” But then came the hypercontagious Delta variant, which continues to hit Florida harder than anywhere else in the country. The result? DeSantis just added another, less flattering distinction to his résumé. When COVID first surged across the Sun Belt last summer, the average number of Floridians dying of the disease every 24 hours peaked at 185, according to the New York Times’s state-by-state COVID database. The same was true over the winter. https://ca.news.yahoo.com/florida-is-the-only-state-where-more-people-are-dying-of-covid-now-than-ever-before-what-went-wrong-090001893.html

Is French easy to learn ?
Argus replied to Jean-Kevin's topic in Whatever I damn well want to talk about.'s Topics
No, not for English speakers. I used to pay the language schools and tutors for the federal government and I saw how much time and effort public servants often went through trying to learn French to a level which would satisfy language requirements. I myself tried to learn French before I went to work for the feds. I paid out of my own pocket for French lessons at a community college, five days a week, 3hrs a day in class plus homework and practice. I got through the first two basic courses okay. I ran into trouble in the intermediate courses. Got the first one done okay, and the second, but that was it. My teacher sat me down and said that I just don't have the ear for it. The liaison is what kills me. The way French speakers join two words together so they sound like a different word entirely. I was at a point where I could understand every word I read, but not when it was spoken aloud by a French speaker. Plus the strong impact of gender on words, and the multiple tenses are killers as they completely change the sound and spelling of the word. -
Canada Election Debate Questions
Argus replied to Tonyburlington's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Canada has the longest wait times for ER visits, doctors appointments access to specialists and specialized treatments in the OECD because of a shortage of doctors which has existed for decades. What are you going to do to bring Canada's current number of 19 doctors per 1000 people up to the level of 30 or 40 which most of our peer countries have? -
Health care becomes an issue in the election at last
Argus replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The system we have is not the one Tommie Douglas came up with. Pierre Trudeau was in love with Cuba and he adapted our system to be like theirs. But in an open society you can't control costs the way they do. That's why we have 19 doctors per 1000 people while Cuba has 67. Cuban doctors don't make hundreds of thousands a year so the government doesn't need to limit their numbers to save money. -
There are a surprising number of Tory signs in my neighbourhood. Last election I didn't see any.

LOL I haven't seen Charles take part in a discussion in years. He's the moderator and apparently feels he shouldn't. On the other hand he doesn't moderate this group or any of the clubs. So it makes sense he should feel free to comment here.
