Harper's Best Fiscal Stimulus Package: Cut Taxes
ThatGuy replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The answer in the first place was to alter income tax. Bump up the exemption amount. Cutting the GST did nothing to my spending habits, just screwed the gov't out of 2 cents per Tim Horton's coffee. -
I figured this would be a big discussion point today since it means we are putting money in as well. Thoughts on this?

The federal government will provide $13.4 (USD) billion in loans to Detroit automakers, the White House said today. An additional $4 billion may be available in February, the Bush administration said. The loans are designed to stabilize U.S. automakers through March 2009, at which time the automakers must show they are financially viable.

The sad nature of what we are facing under a government that has no idea how to do what is right for this country is just too bad Oct. 7: "I think there are probably some great buying opportunities emerging in the stock market as a consequence of all this panic." Asked whether he would unequivocally rule out a deficit under his government: "Yes. ... Yesterday I think I was asked one question about whether we would run a deficit and I said, 'No.' That's my answer." Oct. 11: "The fact of the matter is independent analysts, including the International Monetary Fund, say that Canada is not going to go into recession with the current world environment and its current set of domestic policies. We're the one country that's going to continue to show some growth." Nov. 23: "The most recent private-sector forecasts suggest the strong possibility of a technical recession the end of this year, the beginning of next. "I am surprised at this. I am also further surprised, more importantly, by deflationary pressure that we're seeing around the world. This is a worrying development, one of the reasons why it may well be necessary to take unprecedented fiscal stimulus." Dec. 15: "The truth is, I've never seen such uncertainty in terms of looking forward to the future. .... I'm very worried about the Canadian economy." He wouldn't rule out a depression, saying it “could be” possible, although he quickly added he believed the world had learned enough from the 1930s to avoid another one. Dec. 19: “Some people are talking in the neighbourhood of a five to 10 billion dollar deficit. Our own assessment is frankly that will not be sufficient given the challenges we're facing,” Harper told CTV News in a year-end interview. “I think what will be more realistic in terms of the kind of stimulus our economy is going to need is going to be in the 20-billion to 30-billion dollar range.”

Tories predict $30B deficit next year

A conservative government like Mulroney's? I really don't think that the coalition has anything to do with this. -

The books should be publically accessible. Mr. Flaherty lied to the people of Ontario in the election that saw the PCs in Ontario get decimated. I can't believe they are letting this guy run the country now. He said a surplus of $8 billion, when they were defeated and the books were looked at, there was really $3 billion. -

I don't think that is the case at all do you? Really. You don't have to hide behind the CPC all the time you know. -
What are these morons doing? No deficit. Small deficit. Technical Deficit. $30 billion deficit. Read it and weep. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories

Wow, I thought this thread would have been way bigger considering the CPC supporters should be outraged.

"If you want to be a government in a minority Parliament, you have to work with other people" - Stephen Harper "It's the government's obligation to look really to the third parties to get the support to govern." - Stephen Harper "The Leader of the Opposition's constitutional obligation - the obligation to Parliament - it's the reason we did the merger! - is to make sure Canadians have an alternative for government. " - Stephen Harper "We'll support the government on issues if it's essential to the country but our primary responsibility is not to prop up the government, our responsibility is to provide an opposition and an alternative government for Parliament and for Canadians. " - Stephen Harper "What the government has to do, if it wants to govern for any length of time, is it must appeal primarily to the third parties in the House of Commons to get them to support it. Ignatieff to become Liberal leader Wednesday: report
ThatGuy replied to ThatGuy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I love how anything pro-conservative gets far superior discussion on here. -
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion is expected to resign Monday and Liberal MP Dominic LeBlanc has dropped out of the leadership race and will support rival Michael Ignatieff, CTV News has learned. "Michael Ignatieff pretty much has this leadership race wrapped up," CTV's Chief Parliamentary Correspondent Craig Oliver told CTV Newsnet Sunday evening. "It will be over by Wednesday." Oliver said LeBlanc will make the announcement Monday, according to senior officials. He said LeBlanc will bring four MPs and five senators with him to back Ignatieff. The Liberal caucus is to meet on Wednesday, with will include 57 MPs support Ignatieff, Oliver said. They would "almost certainly" vote to make Ignatieff their parliamentary leader, putting immense pressure on Liberal MP Bob Rae to drop out of the leadership race. Oliver said that sources close to Rae said he's a team player and will drop out so the Liberals can focus on pressing national issues.

I suppose this financial crisis isn't important enough to need people sitting in the House.

Quebec independence would see the destruction of Quebec.

In French, you have Minister Cannon saying to Quebecors that Duceppe is selling them out by giving up the veto. (Agreeing not to bring down the coalition for 18 months) Then in English, we have the Prime Minister arguing to the rest of Canada that the Liberal/NDP Coalition is giving the Bloc a veto? Thoughts on this please! What is going on?
-
They always have the power to vote no. What happens if the Liberals and NDP vote against something, and the Bloq does too without the Coalition. The Government falls anyway.

Not when we watched it here in Ontario. Harper ended about 7:06 on CBC and they had to time fill with pundits until 7:28 because the tape hadn't arrived yet. CTV didn't even air it.
