  1. International Centre for Transitional Justice http://www.ictj.org/en/index.html The agreement includes provisions for financial compensation, a truth commission, and additional healing measures for IRS survivors, making it one of the first attempts to comprehensively address legacies of abuse in an established democracy. Little known facts: Until the 1950's, Indigenous people in Canada could not leave the 'reserve' without a pass, just like in South Africa. In fact, South Africa's apartheid system was modelled on Canada's 'reserves'.
  2. Just replying to this: We have complete and utter independence from Britain. (not so)
  3. I hate to shatter your naive illusions, Bill, but ... remember when Harper had to go and ask the Governor General when he wanted to prorogue parliament? The GG represents the Queen, and royal assent is required for damned near everything.
  4. Obviously some of your US soldiers don't agree, including those present at the incident and the one who interrogated Omar. It was courageous and admirable of them to step up and tell the truth, in defense of a boy who had no choices. It's unfortunate that you don't have the qualities they have.
  5. Well, I see you acknowledge illegal "land grabs". I guess that's some progress. It is relevant to all of us because it is being closely monitored by the international community, and one of the criteria of their evaluation is the involvement of Canadians. Are you aware that this is a Truth Commission just like the South African Truth Commission? Obviously you are not well informed about this area of law. As it stands at present, where Aboriginal rights are asserted via blockade of construction, no injunction against protesters can be granted until consultation and accommodation have occurred, to the satisfaction of the court. The Supreme Court requires "meaningful" consultation and "adequate" accommodation of Aboriginal rights. Ask the Mayor of Brantford, currently ordered by the court to consult with Six Nations and accommodate their rights. To return to the topic, here's a perspective from the UN agency monitoring Canada's Truth Commission: As The Globe and Mail has reported, bodies of aboriginal children lie in unmarked graves across Canada, on the grounds of residential schools where the federal government sought for more than a century to extinguish aboriginal culture. Although the Truth and Reconciliation Commission investigating these schools has hit a roadblock, it remains the best chance the schools' survivors have to tell their stories - and the best chance Canada has to face its past. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinio...ticle719924.ece While Canada's genocide may be seen by some to be in the past, telling the truth about it is very much in the present, and affects us all. Because the land is still being taken, still being destroyed ... everyday. And because it is only under court and international monitoring that Aboriginal people can tell the truth in Canada, without putting themselves in danger ... still. In other words, the genocide continues, and we all continue to benefit from the theft and destruction of Indigenous land.
  6. You're right. It's extremely important, especially with Toronto looking for new places to dump its 72 truckloads of garbage a day in 2010. That's an unnecessarily offensive term, and incorrect. I can assure you these are knowledgable and competent people. And there are many many more than a handful. You're wrong. You're only talking about the few who are mentioned in the news. Native youth are onsite and responsible for keeping the sacred fire. Hundreds of other youth are supporting in other ways. Heck, teachers took their students to the protest site for field trips! Over 2,000 people went to the rally recently. They were definitely an all ages crowd. This is a smaller rally at the site itself: There's lots of video. Check it out. I found an interesting factoid while browsing http://stopdumpsite41.ca/ The liner material is guaranteed for 20 years, but the seams only for 2 years. More interesting stuff: http://www.torontosun.com/news/columnists/...493171-sun.html When Simcoe County got its certificate of approval to move forward with the dump back in the late 1990s, it got that approval from the ministry of environment based on county submissions that the aquifer under Site 41 contained water with an upward gradient, rather than a downward gradient. A downward gradient would have immediately nixed Site 41 as an appropriate landfill venue, since downward gradients actually suck escaping landfill toxins into aquifers, while upward gradients actually keep contaminants pushed back. Gord Leonard, however, does not believe Site 41 has an upward gradient, and this comes from experience, as well as documents he has seen while sitting as a member of the community monitoring committee. "There are five bore holes on Site 41," he says. "Bore hole No. 5 is smack-dab in the middle but, after years showing its water level dropping, the county now has documentation showing that its water level is now actually rising -- making it upward gradient, and therefore making it just what it wants it to be. "But tell me, how does that happen? How does water suddenly change directions? "I'll tell you how it happens," he says. "It happens when information gets fudged." ... It would appear, however, that Ontario's environment commissioner, Gordon Miller, seems to agree with Leonard's suspicions -- recently stating that building a dump over an aquifer in 2009, particularly using an engineering process proposed in the early 1990s, was a political mystifier. "If we were going to start this process today, we would not build on this site," Miller has been quoted as saying. And ... http://stopdumpsite41.ca/?p=570 At 11 a.m., Tiny Township Councillor Andre Clair and resident Gord Leonard (both Community Monitoring Committee members) visited the dump site with Ontario Environment Ministry official Greg Athron and a ministry hydrologist. Clair said it doesn’t appear that construction of the dump site will be completed by August 25. Clair said they discussed the fact that work is being done that’s covered by amendments to the Certificate of Approval that have been applied for by the County but not yet approved by the Ministry. Clair said ministry officials said the County is taking a “big risk” by doing the work without approval because an amendment might be denied and the work might have to be dismantled, “but,” Clair added, “you know as well as I do, chances of that are very slim.” Unfriggenbelievable! It's such a scam. I hope those here who have expressed concern will email their concerns to the County Councillors (emails provided in earlier post) and to the Ontario Minister of the Environment. [email protected]
  7. The courts have found Canada liable for the abuses of the residential schools. Canada's internationally monitored Truth Commission is just starting. Over the five years it is in operation, Canadians will learn much more about the topic, and we will be held responsible. The Supreme Court of Canada has repeatedly ruled that our governments must "consult, and accommodate" Aboriginal rights on all traditional lands. We are responsible ... to our own courts.
  8. Remember that "that man" was 15 years old and under the control of adults.
  9. speaking of lying ... Read it again b_c ... "and I doubt that" However, I did notice that the Mayo also referred to her previous diagnosis as a "brain tumour", obviously not verifying that with the records, pretty tacky in itself. Notice whan challenged, she said she knows it was called R... cyst when it was diagnosed in 1998, but she and the Mayo and the partisans prefer to go the inflammatory route and call it a "brain tumour", which never was her diagnosis. Pretty tacky all round, I say. I am also aware that some of us here are just trying to learn the truth, and others are just trying to distort the truth. And that's pretty tacky too.
  10. Excuse me ... wrong link. From your link benny: Among the accusations levied against Ms. Holmes are that she exaggerated the severity of her brain tumour and it was actually a Rathke's cleft cyst, which is said to be benign. Ms. Holmes counters that doctors did diagnose her with a Rathke's cleft cyst, but it is still considered a tumour, which her American doctors told her would certainly cause death if not removed immediately. She said the cyst was pushing on her pituitary gland and causing endocrine issues; she also feared permanent vision loss. Ms. Holmes was first diagnosed with a small tumour in 1998, but doctors said it was not a cause for concern and should be monitored closely. So ... Holmes prefers to call it a "brain tumour" which is not accurate. Also, I don't believe the Mayo clinic told her she was in immediate danger of dying. If they did, then they are guilty of creating business for themselves by lying, and I doubt that. Instead, I believe she made that up too ... just like she made up her "brain tumour". http://www.mayoclinic.org/patientstories/story-339.html "We needed to remove the cyst to save her vision." It says nothing about her being in danger of dying. I believe the Mayo refused to endorse the partisan commercial she made. I for one will be encouraging OHIP to sue her back.
  11. At the beginning of this thread. We've been over this ground before and now people who haven't read anything about it are making it up as they go. Holmes was diagnosed accurately in Canada in 1998 as having a slow growing cyst on her pituitary. She developed symptoms (vision) in 2005, I believe. Then she was told she'd have to wait a few months to see a neurologist and have an MRI. At that point, her husband decided instead to pay for her to go to the Mayo clinic in the US, where the diagnosis was confirmed and she was treated. The ONLY reason she went to the states was because of the wait for specialists, and because her husband insisted. She did not have a "brain tumour". She was not in danger of dying. She lied to the US public, for political purposes and possibly monetary gain ... or fame. What kind of person wants to be famous as a liar? She deserves nothing but contempt, imo. If she does sue, I hope the government sues her back for defamation.
  12. Your racist colonial contempt is noted. Do you not have anything of any intelligence to say?
  13. That's a very immature understanding you promote, riv: "It wasn't genocide and anyway, I didn't do it". Genocide against Indigenous Peoples was and is conducted for a purpose: To gain control of the land and its re$ource$. Every Canadian today continues to benefit from that since Canada's economy is entirely dependent on resources taken from traditional Indigenous land without their consent and with no compensation. Every Canadian has a responsibility to understand the whole truth, and to pressure our governments to honour their legal duty to "consult, and to accommodate" the rights of Aboriginal Peoples on all traditional land. Examples are ... oil/gas pipelines the oil fields Brantford/Caledonia Frontenac mining Platinex mining Dump Site 41 ... and many many other places where Indigenous Nations are trying to get our governments to honour our legal obligations, instead of destroying the land. Because the land was not 'given'; It was 'borrowed', and we owe a legal debt for its use. We also have a legal obligation to treat the land in a manner that allows it to sustain itself, and human life. Not only have we destroyed the lives of millions of traditional Indigenous people, we have destroyed the water, soil and air that sustain all human life. And by the way, the sterilization of traditional Indigenous leaders, which was rampant in the 20th century and paid for by our federal government, is a key indicator of genocidal intent. Canada is not innocent, and we are all responsible.
  14. That's legally irrelevant, as I'm sure you know.
  15. That's just not true. You are perpetrating the same lies that Holmes did. She knew since 1998 that she had a slow growing cyst on her pituitary gland.
  16. How is it treason against Canada? I don't believe we were 'at war' at that time. The first thing the lawyers and the Crown will consider is his age at the time - 15 - and how he came to be involved - his father. What do you think - would they try him as a juvenile or as an adult? Would they be able to try him for treason at all?
  17. She did not have a brain tumour!!! And she damn well knew it. She lied to the US media and people. She was diagnosed in 1998 with a slow growing cyst on her pituitary gland.

  19. We have legal responsibility to fulfill the treaties. Also, every Canadian continues to benefit from illegal actions by our governments because the economy of Canada is entirely dependent on resources from Aboriginal lands, and they have not consented nor been compensated. These are violations of treaties.
  20. Another development, re the County's refusal to release the model for the dumpsite: A letter released by the lawyers defending some of the protesters: It is our opinion that the County of Simcoe's recent responses to the Privacy Commissioner with respect to Order MO-2416 have been inappropriate, and that continued failure to respond appropriately would create a serious risk of liability. It is our further opinion that, partially as a result of those responses the County of Simoce should impose a moratorium on construction of DumpSite 41 that remains in effect unless and until further investigations of possible environmental impacts have been completed. The basis of our opinion is outlined below. more ... http://stopdumpsite41.ca/wp-content/upload...g.16.09-pdf.pdf And this is an interesting statement: We have prepared this opinion on our own behalf; it reflects our personal legal opinions and is not presented on behalf of any former or present client. This opinion can be used in any appropriate way and quoted by anyone who finds it useful to do so Imagine that! Lawyers working without pay and with conscience! Another interesting statement: ... all regional dumps (Essa / Oro-Medonte / Pauze) that have leaked were all approved by the Ministry of the Environment more ... http://stopdumpsite41.ca/?p=449
  21. Well then this will make you cry too: Explanation sought for filthy spring water – six arrested, no explanation ELMVALE – Six people were arrested by the OPP today while seeking a reason for the cloudiness and loss of pressure in an artesian spring on a farm property next to Dump Site 41. Three of the people are aboriginal. One of them, Jen Meunier, an Algonquin from Eastern Ontario, was arrested along with another woman while holding an eagle feather and making ceremonies. To make an arrest in ceremony is an act of disrespect, Beausoleil First Nation Councillor Beth Brass Elson said in a telephone interview. “They should never have touched those girls while they were sitting there with their smudge bowls.” Brass Elson said she believes Simcoe County staff are making immense efforts to get the dump site finished before a moratorium vote that’s to be held August 25. “We’re afraid it will get to the point when it goes to the County Council, it will be at the point of no return.“ Dave Wahwahbiginojii, a Dene-Anishinaabe from Northern Ontario who was at the scene trying to negotiate answers through the OPP’s aboriginal response team (ART), said the concern is that the water used by the protest camp turned cloudy on Saturday. It comes from an artesian spring that the farmer who owns the property has used for pure drinking water for 50 years. Simcoe County has been working late into the night and on the weekend since OPP moved in on Friday August 7 and dismantled a shelter, opening access to Gate 2. The action ended a 5-week blockade although the protest has continued across the road. Wahwahbiginojii said that when workers arrived Monday morning, the site supervisor was asked about the water quality. Two local citizens also wanted to know who gave permission to keep working at such a pace when the next Simcoe County Council meeting, on August 25, will be voting on a moratorium. more ... http://stopdumpsite41.ca/?p=527
  22. If you are responding to my post, only comments re the 1500's are valid - ie the century of the conquest of America, prior to settlement.
