  1. In Canada, in federal and provincial elections, we select one name as a representative. We generally vote on one day. I show my ID when voting - several scrutineers check my name. Hidden, I put my single X on a paper behind a counter A Canadian census form? It has zillions of personal questions. The last time (2021), I threw the complex form in the garbage. (Young kids kept knocking on my door asking me questions. I said yes to everything.)
  2. On this, you CdnFox and I part ways. IMHO, Canada is better because we are forced to get along.
  3. In Canada, in federal and provincial elections, our ballots are simple: we vote for a single candidate on a single day - one X. on a ballot. We choose a representative In the US, your ballots are complicated votes with many choices. Like our Canadian census forms. ==== Since 2020, the US voting system is like our Canadian census system.
  4. CdnFox, Do you live in a rural area? I prefer the federal Australian gun regulations. ========== As to the US Second Amendment: I'll be the last kid on my street with a nuclear weapon. Of all the amendments to repeal....
  5. And BTW, What's the difference between completing a census form - or voting? Which has a bigger difference?
  6. I know how a Canadian census is organised. (Zillions of questions. Kids paid to do good.) Your US federal elections - depends on the State - are now organised in a similar way.
  7. In 1896, Wilfrid Laurier was the sole francophone at the cabinet table. But there was also Clifford Sifton.
  8. Between 1880 and 1920, many foreigners were arriving in Canada. But many Quebecers were moving south. ===== Canada used to be the US immigration system. Australia is different.
  9. Source? The federal census of 1891, 1901, 1911 and 1921. 1. Between 1890-1920, Canada received more immigrants than it has ever received in its history - both in absolute terms and in relative terms. 2. Australia is a large island. Immigrants to Canada frequently move south. 3. The larger question is how to bring humans into the modern world.
  10. On occasion, Artificial Intelligence at best hallucinates. Life invents. ===== Steve Jobs famously said that the ultimate change agent was death.
  11. Classical music? Modern movies largely use three composers. It's either Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky. If you don't know, guess one of the three. You're 90% chance to sound smart.
  12. Make no mistake. With drop-off, mail-in ballots, and a dedicated base of young people, the Democrats have discovered Kryptonite. The US voting system is now like Canada's census.
  13. Growth problem? Between 1890 - 1910, Canada had a much larger immigration (in relative terms and even in absolute terms) than at present. As an Australian once noted, it is net migrants that matter. Many immigrants to Canada move south.
  14. Peter Ustinov described Toronto as New York organised by the Swiss. Still today, people in Toronto talk business at lunch. Like Singapore. Hongkong is different.
  15. Montreal is the Big Easy North.
  16. Aristides, Putin is no Hitler To me, this Ukraine War is like the Balkan Wars
  17. Aristides, Let each State decide its own affairs. In 2024, we are in a place to create a century of place. Like in 1815, States must make arrangements so that ordinary people can live well.
  18. We no longer face the Soviets. Reagan won. ===== We now live in a multipolar world.
  19. I listened to Biden's speech of March 2024. To me, Biden wants to impose America on the rest of us. ===== Like 1814 or so,, we now have a wonderful chance to create peace for a century.
  20. But surely Toronto is not Montreal. Singapore is, uh, a better model.
  21. Canada, survival? Maybe if one views us as another animal ===== We Canadians are smarter. We get along.
  22. Clueless. === We Canadians: different languages, religions - we get along. Centuries we've done this. Americans? They had a civil war. They killed each other. We Canadians get along.
  23. Google: Ckifton Sifton. In 1890, the west of Canada could have been a very different country. Instead, French Catholics were pushed abroad
  24. With this speech, I reckon that Biden won his re-election in November 2024. ===== To win in 2024, Biden needs certain critical counties in certain critical states He just did that. He motivated his base.
