  1. Ex-General Nears Victory in Indonesia Vote Will this change bring Indonesia back to something similiar to when the Suharto family ruled Indonesia? I certainly hope not: The Bre-X Gold Scandal The Black Hand Suahrto family had engineered the salting of the Bre-X gold mine Unbelievable - just wait until the Ontario Securities Commission trial resumes against John Felderhof in Toronto.
  2. Nonsense. I just accept pie throwing as an acceptable form of political protest. Others here do not. Not much more to say about it, apart from commenting on the aspect of worrying about what was in the pie. Obviously lemon pie is acceptable, but a pie laden with razor blades is not. This is logic? Pie throwing is now a form of political protest. Pie contents could have something harmful like razor blades or nails in it. Conclusion: All pie throwing is dangerous. I think there is more paranoia here than logic.
  3. tfb......yes, of course we have heard about Rosa Parks, and no, of course not, Rosa should not have obeyed those racist laws, and given up her seat to a white man on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama (recently saw a movie about her and the civil right protests) The Key Difference This is an interesting article by the right on left wing approaches to solving problems.
  4. Road tests, eh. Kimmy has some good suggestions above for roadside testing, but is this really the reason for prohibiting weed. Somehow I doubt it as well. I have been trying to figure out what the real reason is that marijuana is still illegal in Canada. Here are a few suggestions: 1 - To support the US War on Drugs. 2- Fear of offending Religious Organizations. 3- Fear of being killed by Biker Gangs by encroaching on their turf. 4 - Fear that weed will lead to addiction and other drugs. 5 - Health reasons. 6 - Behaviour effects of consumption. But what do people here think is the overriding reason weed is still illegal, as it could certainly help the government coffers, if it were to be legalized and taxed.
  5. Meech seems to be the line in the sand in Canada. Those for, and those against. And never the twain shall meet.
  6. Pieing someone is a violent act based strictly on a technicality. What if it were a bag full of feathers? Would that still be considered violent? Of course not. Pieing has developed into an acceptable form of political protest. It has happened to the richest man in the world - do you remember Bill Gates getting pied? This sentence represents a message to to the weak - don't fuck with the powerful. All this sentence will do is further widen the gap between the controllers and the controllees in our society. not a healthy sign. Don't we have enough problems as it is? Seriously, we need to stand back and take a look at ourselves, then we would see how ridiculous a situation this is, to throw someone in jail for political disagreement.
  7. With all due respect, throwing a pie has come to take on a specific meaning, It is a perfectably acceptable form of political protest. It happens to the elites, because some people feel so helpless in the societies in which they live. Let's not get carried away. The problem is is that it ridicules, or humiliates the politician, and we can't have that, can we! It is not like spitting on someone, like I saw happeng to Gordon Campbell, and which I heard happened to Lyin' Brian, behaviour which is totally unacceptable, no matter how much one is at odds with both these clowns' misguided policies.
  8. I suppose that is one of the reasons folks purchase CDs instead of listening to the radio, although the radio does bring a certain amount of awareness about what's happening in music.
  9. Drunken Klein goes into a homeless shelter and berates homeless people. Campbelll is DUI. Rene Levesque while driving in a drunken stupor kills a street person. Good exemplary Canadian politicians, eh! Good Christian behaviour, eh! And a lot of the supporters of these bums condone someone for taking a joint. What an amazin' example of absolulute Canadian hypocrisy!
  10. That's the whole point, it was pie not a bat or bullet. Why compare apples and oranges, eh! Klein is a stumblebum, a drunk, or a dry-drunk who really has no place in civilized politics. Only in Alberta, eh!
  11. Damning with the faintest possible praise I like Paul's comments on the media here!!!
  12. Since when did the majority ever have a handle on truth, what is right or wrong, etc.?
  13. When CBC TV shows an American movie on Saturday night prime time I could not not agree with you more. What's the point of the CBC, eh?
  14. The reality is it is a neck and neck race., and similar to Canadian elections, results will depend on which side best gets out the vote. Most people realize that the polls are just used to attempt to manipulate. Maybe we could use a little depth here, eh?
  15. The media tv networks are in the advertising business. Everything, and I mean everything, is subservient to selling their ads, and anything that gets in the way is relentlessly crushed. The news in the way it is presented is very destructive to us as human beings and as society as a whole. If one spent a lot of time watching the news, one could easily become a very negative, paranoid person. The news does not in any way represent an average cross-section of societial behaviour. It shows basically the freaks. As I stated above, the raison d'etre for the media is selling their ads. They couldn't give a rat's ass what news is presented, as long as it is depressing, ugly, and dismal. The idea is to make you feel so bad that in desperation you will turn to the products they are advertising for relief to make yourself feel better. Why do you think the news is prime time? Do you really thing the crap they show on the news is connected or relates to the average citizen? There is only one way to feel better. Turn off the TV, get off the couch, go and have a walk, a run, a swim, go to the symphony, or the art gallery, or make love, or go to a laughter workshop, etc. As long as you subject yourself to the news you cannot help but become depressed and eventually become dependant on the drug industry for relief. Is that the life you wish for yourself? The media is one of, if not the most, destructive elements we have in our society.
  16. Article This is so typical of Canada's uptight society. no more humour is allowed in politics. How ridiculous! Canadians need to enrol in some laughter workshops, where they can learn how to NOT take themselves so seriously, don't ya think?
  17. I have to admit that I am basically a born again CBC listener. Recently though, I have been spinning the dial to get a bit of variety in my radio repertoire. And I have come across this station that plays great music which I enjoy: music from the sixties and seventies. There is just one problem though. When they are not playing music, the DJs are constantly bantering with each other. Now I realize that these DJs are well paid, and are probably reasonably affluent, but I doubt somehow that the majority of their listening audience are in the top 5% incomewise. So why do theses fools go on and on, day after day, with their rhetoric, which I am sure only appeals to a very small percentage of their listening audience? Do they really believe their fans are that stupid? Or are these DJs really that stupid? While I certainly enjoy their music, I am considering switching the dial away from them, because of their boring brain-dead political comments? My question is: why do these commentators think that their political propaganda is a plus, when actually it is a negative? Maybe that is why I enjoyed Larry & Willy so much! BTW are they still around the Lower Mainland?
  18. A new TV show started this season called the "Jack & Bobby" Show. One of the things that was said tonight, is that Republicans tried to discredit the Kennedys, and in so doing, helped to create them. Do you get the impression that a lot of folks would like to go back to that era, the sixties? What does this show say about America today?
  19. I just don't understand why we don't adopt some system of guaranteed annual income, which certainly would help to reduce our massive bureaucracy, I think. Think about it - no more social assistance, unemployment insurance, old age pension departments, etc. We could probably eliminate 1/2 the number of civil servants in the country.
  20. Why do you have a low opinion of Buzz Hargrove? His job is to represent his union members and get the best possible wages, benefits, and working conditions possible for them. The CAW are by far the most progressive labour union in the country, constantly challenging its memebers to re-educate themselves to our new Canada, where women for example, are treated as equals, with respect and dignity. It has not been an easy road to hoe. Buzz's occupation actually sounds like a pretty noble occupation to me.
  21. Well, if it is an aberration, why is it allowed to continue? Why is there no attempt made (my assumption) to correct this oversight?
  22. August1991.....nice attempt to deflect resonsibility for some right wing behaviour, but Bush actually did try to block blacks from voting, sometimes using police intimidation tactics, in Florida, in the last US national election.
  23. For how long have US administrations been propping up right wing dictatorships to protect their material wealth? To suggest otherwise is revisionist history. Iraq is a good example. At one time the US backed the right wing regime of Hussein. There is only one reason the the US is presently there and it has absolutely nothing to do with bin Laden or Al Queda. People who live in glass houses, like the right winger who started this thread, should not throw stones. It is a moronic topic, that even a ten year old would give short shrift to.
  24. This is what I see some Conservative right wing thinking leads to in behaviour: Treatment of Cuban people. President Kennedy's Assassination Robert Kennedy's Assassination Martin Luther King's Assassination Impechment of Clinton over sex horseshit Excessive controlling of our mass media, therefore destroying our democratic process. Supportive of vicious dictators Vicious dictators like Saddam Assassination of other political leaders Killing people who hold different point of view (progressives) Racism. Intolerance Greed, stomping on the poor, attacking the weak, pummeling the disenfranchised, the very opposite of what Jesus represented according to Christianity. Note I said some right wing behaviour. But the title of this thread says a lot in itself about its right wing author with its arrogant approach.
  25. Do you feel safer? Seriously. I sure don't. There is so much civil strife, so many peope being killed, including Americans, on a daily basis, it must be having some impact. Imagine if Canadians were being slaughtered like that, how we would be reacting, and thinking, in this country. It just seeems to me that the present US Administration is becoming more and more isolated.
